Claims
- 1. A process which comprises adding anhydrous hydrogen fluoride to a phosphorus compound having 1-2 halogen atoms selected from chlorine, bromine, or iodine bonded directly to phosphorus at a rate such that the anhydrous hydrogen fluoride reacts with the phosphorus compound to replace said halogen atoms with fluorine atoms and thereby form a fluorophosphorus product without the accumulation of sufficient anhydrous hydrogenfluoride to cause substantial decomposition of the fluorophosphorus product; said process being conducted in an inert solvent and in the presence of a pyridine-type compound or hydrogen halide salt thereof.
- 2. A process of claim 1 conducted in a halohydrocarbon solvent.
- 3. A process of claim 2 wherein said halohydrocarbon is methylene chloride and the halogen exchange reaction is carried out at reflux.
- 4. A process of claim 3 wherein said phosphorus compound has the structure ##STR3## wherein X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, Z is oxygen or sulfur, R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of substituted and unsubstituted alkoxy, thioalkoxy, aryloxy, thioaryloxy, cycloalkoxy, alkenoxy, and arylalkoxy and R.sup.2 is selected from the same group as R.sup.1 or is X, or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 can jointly form a divalent hydrocarbon group bonded at each end through oxygen or sulfur to the phosphorus atom in structures I or II.
- 5. A process of claim 4 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 jointly form a divalent group having the structure ##STR4## wherein R.sup.3 is methylene or alkylidene bridge or forms a direct ortho-ortho bond between the benzene rings, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are independently selected from alkyl groups, cycloalkyl groups and aralkyl groups and the oxygen to said phosphorus atom in structures I or II.
- 6. A process of claim 5 wherein said divalent group has the structure
- wherein R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are alkyl group.
- 7. A process of claim 6 wherein said phosphorus compound has structure I and X is chlorine.
- 8. A process of claim 7 wherein R.sup.3 is present and is the ethylidene group.
- 9. A process of claim 8 wherein R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are tert-butyl groups.
