Claims
- 1. A process of preparing a polymer containing hindered amine light stabilizer groups chemically connected to the backbone of the polymer comprising polymerizing any ethylenically unsaturated monomer capable of being polymerized by free radicals in the presence of an initiating amount of a compound having the formula ##STR7## wherein p is 1 or 2;
- R.sup.1 is hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic of 1-20 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted alicyclic of 5-12 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted araliphatic of 7-22 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic acyl of 2-21 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted alicyclic acyl of 6-13 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted aryl acyl of 7-11 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted araliphatic acyl of 7-22 carbons, --C(.dbd.O)--N(R.sup.4)(R.sup.5), --C(.dbd.O)--O--R.sup.9 or --(CH.sub.2 --CH(R.sup.4)--O).sub.r --R.sup.4, where r is 2-50;
- R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 may be the same or different and are independently substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic of 1-20 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted aryl of 6-10 carbons or substituted or unsubstituted araliphatic of 7-22 carbons;
- R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 may be linked together to form a substituted or unsubstituted saturated alicylic group of 4-12 carbons;
- V is --CH(R.sup.5)-- or --C(.dbd.O)--;
- R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 may be the same or different and are independently hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic of 1-20 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted aryl of 6-10 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted araliphatic of 7-22 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted alicyclic of 5-12 carbons which may optionally contain 1-3 oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen heteroatoms in the ring, the nitrogen heteroatom having a hydrogen atom or a methyl group bonded thereto, with the proviso that multiple heteroatoms must be separated from each other and from the portion of the compound to which the alicyclic group is bonded by at least one carbon atom; and
- when V is --CH(R.sup.5)--, X is ##STR8## when V is --C(.dbd.O)--, X is ##STR9## R.sup.7 is a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic diradical of 1-20 carbons, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl diradical of 6-10 carbons, a substituted or unsubstituted alicyclic diradical of 5-12 carbons or a substituted or unsubstituted araliphatic diradical of 7-22 carbons, where any R.sup.7 diradical may contain 1-6 oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen heteroatoms, the nitrogen heteroatom having a hydrogen atom or a methyl group bonded thereto, with the proviso that multiple heteratoms must be separated from each other and from the radical ends by at least one carbon atom;
- R.sup.8 is hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic of 1-20 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted alicyclic of 5-12 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted aryl of 6-10 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted araliphatic of 7-22 carbons, --C(.dbd.O)--O--R.sup.9 or --(CH.sub.2 --CH(R.sup.4)--O).sub.4 --R.sup.5 ;
- W is --O--, --S-- or --N(R.sup.5)--;
- Y is --Z--, --O--, --S--, --N(R.sup.4)--, --S(.dbd.O)--, --O--S(.dbd.O)--, --O--S(.dbd.O).sub.2 --, --NH--C(.dbd.O)--NH--, --O--C(.dbd.O)--O, --C(.dbd.O)--O--, --O--C(.dbd.O)--C(.dbd.O)--O--, --O--C(.dbd.O)--C(.dbd.O)--N(R.sup.4)--, --N(R.sup.4)--C(.dbd.O)--C(.dbd.O)--O-- or --N(R.sup.4)--C(.dbd.O)--C(.dbd.O)--N(R.sup.4)--;
- n, m and q are independently 0 or 1 with the proviso that when m is 0, n must be 0;
- Z is --C(.dbd.O)--, --S(.dbd.O).sub.2 --, --C(R.sup.9)(R.sup.10)--, --O--C(.dbd.O)--, --N(R.sup.4)--C(.dbd.O)--, --O--C(.dbd.)--C(.dbd.O)--, --N(R.sup.4)--C(.dbd.O)--C(.dbd.)--, --Si(R.sup.4)(R.sup.5)--, --Si(O--R.sup.4)(O--R.sup.5)-- or --P(O)(O--R.sup.4)(O--R.sup.5)--; and
- when p is 1, R.sup.6 is hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted tertiary aliphatic of 4-24 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted tertiary alicyclic of 6-13 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted tertiary araliphatic of 9-24 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic acyl of 2-21 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted aryl acyl of 7-11 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted araliphatic acyl of 8-22 carbons, --C(.dbd.O)--N(R.sup.4)(R.sup.5), --C(.dbd.O)--O--R.sup.9, --C(R.sup.9)(R.sup.10)--C(.dbd.O)--O--R.sup.4, --S(.dbd.O).sub.2 --R.sup.4 or ##STR10## and when p is 2, R.sup.6 is substituted or unsubstituted di-tertiary aliphatic of 6-27 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted di-tertiary alicyclic diradical of 7-14 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted di-tertiary araliphatic of 12-27 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic diacyl of 3-21 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted alicyclic diacyl of 7-15 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted aryl diacyl of 8-12 carbons or substituted or unsubstituted araliphatic diacyl of 9-24 carbons;
- R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 are independently substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic of 1-20 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted aryl of 6-10 carbons, substituted or unsubstituted araliphatic of 7-22 carbons or substituted or unsubstituted alicyclic of 5-12 carbons which may contain 1-3 oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen heteroatoms in the ring, the nitrogen heteroatom having a hydrogen atom or a methyl group bonded thereto, with the proviso that multiple heteroatoms must be separated from each other and from the portion of the compound to which the alicyclic group is bonded by at least one carbon atom; and
- when both are present, R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 may be linked together through an alkylene diradical bridge containing 4-9 carbons to form a cycloalkyl ring, in which the alkylene diradical bridge may contain 1-3 oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen heteroatoms, the nitrogen heteroatom having a hydrogen atom or a methyl group bonded thereto, with the provisos that multiple heteroatoms must be separated from each other and from the ends of the diradical bridge by at least one carbon atom; and
- when R.sup.6 is tertiary aliphatic, tertiary alicyclic or tertiary araliphatic, R.sup.10 may also be --OO--R.sup.6 or --O--R.sup.9 ; and
- substituents for R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7, R.sup.8, R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 are one or more of halogen, alkyl of 1-8 carbons, alkoxy of 1-8 carbons, --C.tbd.N, --OH, epoxy, carboxy, alkyoxycarbonyl of 2-6 carbons, acyloxy of 1-4 carbons, acryloyl, acryloyloxy, methacryloyl, methacryloyloxy, hydroxymethyl, hydroxyethyl, alkylmercapto of 1-4 carbons or trialkoxysilyl of 3-12 carbons.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl of 1-4 carbons, allyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, 2,3-epoxypropyl, 2-acetoxyethyl, benzyl, alkanoyl of 2-5 carbons, cyclohexylcarbonyl, benzoyl or phenacyl;
- R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 may be the same or different and are independently alkyl of 1-4 carbons, benzyl or taken together with the carbon to which they are attached to form a cyclohexane ring;
- R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 may be the same or different and are independently hydrogen, alkyl of 1-8 carbons, phenyl, benzyl, cycloalkyl of 5-7 carbons or 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl;
- X is ##STR11## R.sup.7 is alkylene of 1-10 carbons, arylene of 6-10 carbons, aralkylene of 8-16 carbons or cycloalkylene of 4-8 carbons;
- R.sup.8 is hydrogen, alkyl of 1-8 carbons, phenyl, benzyl, cycloalkyl of 5-7 carbons or 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl;
- Y is --O--, --S--, --N(R.sup.9)--, --O--C(.dbd.O)--O--, --C(.dbd.O)--O-- or Z;
- Z is --C(.dbd.O)--, --C(R.sup.9)(R.sup.10)-- or --O--C(.dbd.O)--; and
- when p is 1, R.sup.6 is t-alkyl of 4-10 carbons, t-aralkyl of 9-12 carbons, acyl of 2-10 carbons, aroyl of 7-11 carbons or ##STR12## and when p is 2, R.sup.6 is di-tertiary alkylene of 6-12 carbons, di-tertiary aralkylene of 12-15 carbons, alkanedioyl of 3-6 carbons or aryl diacyl of 8-12 carbons;
- R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 are independently alkyl of 1-8 carbons, phenyl, benzyl, cycloalkyl of 5-7 carbons or 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl and when both are present, R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 may be connected to each other by an alkylene diradical bridge containing 4-9 carbons; and
- when R.sup.6 is t-alkyl, t-cycloalkyl or t-aralkyl, R.sup.10 may also be --OO--R.sup.6 ; and
- substituents for R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7, R.sup.8, R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 are one or more of --Cl, --Br, alkyl of 1-4 carbons, alkoxy of 1-8 carbons, --C.tbd.N, --OH, epoxy, carboxy, alkyoxycarbonyl of 2-6 carbons or acyloxy of 1-4 carbons.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein
- p is 1;
- q is 0;
- R.sup.1 is hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl of 1-4 carbons, 2-hydroxyethyl, 2-acetoxyethyl or alkanoyl of 2-5 carbons;
- R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 may be the same or different and are independently alkyl of 1-4 carbons;
- R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 may be the same or different and are independently hydrogen or alkyl of 1-8 carbons;
- R.sup.7 is alkylene of 1-10 carbons or aralkylene of 8-16 carbons;
- R.sup.8 is hydrogen, alkyl of 1-8 carbons, phenyl or benzyl; and
- when p is 1, R.sup.6 is t-alkyl of 4-10 carbons, t-aralkyl of 9-12 carbons, acyl of 2-10 carbons, aroyl of 7-11 carbons or ##STR13## R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 are independently alkyl of 1-8 carbons or phenyl; and substituents for R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7, R.sup.8, R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 are one or more of alkoxy of 1-8 carbons, --OH, carboxy, alkyoxycarbonyl of 2-6 carbons or acyloxy of 1-carbons.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are methyl, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are hydrogen, X is ##STR14## n, m, and q are 0, Z is --O--C(.dbd.O)-- and R.sup.6 is t-butyl or t-amyl.
- 5. The process of claim 3 wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are methyl, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are hydrogen, X is ##STR15## n and m are 1, q is 0, Y is --O--C(.dbd.O)--O--, R.sup.7 is --CH(CH.sub.3)--CH.sub.2 --, Z is --C(R.sup.9)(R.sup.10), R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 are methyl and R.sup.6 is t-butyl.
- 6. The process of claim 3 wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or acetyl, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are methyl, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are hydrogen, X is ##STR16## n, m and q are 0, Z is --O--C(.dbd.O)-- and R.sup.6 is t-butyl.
- 7. The process of claim 3 wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are methyl, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are hydrogen, X is ##STR17## n and m are 1, q is 0, Y is --O--C(.dbd.O)-- or --NH--C(.dbd.O)--, R.sup.7 is --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --, Z is --C(.dbd.O)--and R.sup.6 is t-butyl.
- 8. The process of claim 3 wherein R.sup.1 is 2-acetoxyethyl, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are methyl, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are hydrogen, X is ##STR18## n and m are 1, q is 0, Y is --O--C(.dbd.O)--O--, R.sup.7 is --CH(CH.sub.3)--CH.sub.2, Z is --C(R.sup.9)(R.sup.10)--, R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 are methyl and R.sup.6 is t-butyl.
- 9. The process of claim 3 wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are methyl, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are hydrogen, X is ##STR19## R.sup.8 is hydrogen and R.sup.6 is t-amyl.
- 10. The stabilized polymer prepared in accordance with the process of any one of claims 1 through 9.
