Claims
- 1. A method of making a multicomponent fiber comprising the steps of:
- (a) directing respective melt flows of incompatible first and second polymers to a spinneret,
- (b) forming a multicomponent fiber by extruding the incompatible first and second polymers through orifices of the spinnerette to form a fiber having longitudinally coextensive first and second polymer domains corresponding to said first and second incompatible polymers, respectively, and
- (c) interposing a compatibilizing boundary layer formed of a third polymer which is different from, but compatible with, each of said incompatible first and second polymers, and which is disposed longitudinally coextensively between said first and second polymer domains by coextruding said third polymer through said orifices of said spinnerette simultaneously with said extruding of the incompatible first and second polymers according to step (b).
- 2. A method as in claim 1, which further comprises the step of drawing the multicomponent fiber at least 10%.
- 3. A method as in claim 1, wherein said first domain entirely surrounds said second domain, and wherein said boundary layer entirely surround said second domain.
- 4. A method as in claim 1 or 3, wherein said first domain is formed of a nylon polymer.
- 5. A method as in claim 4, wherein said second domain is formed from a polyolefin.
- 6. A method as in claim 5, wherein said third polymer of said boundary layer is formed of a maleic anhydride modified polypropylene.
- 7. A method as in claim 1, wherein said multicomponent fiber is in the form of a trilobal fiber.
- 8. A method as in claim 7, wherein said multicomponent fiber includes a nylon sheath domain and at least three radially elongate core domains entirely surrounded by said sheath domain, and wherein said boundary layer is interposed between each of said core domains and said sheath domain.
- 9. A method as in claim 8, wherein said core domains are formed from a polyolefin.
- 10. A method as in claim 9, wherein said boundary layer is formed from a maleic anhydride modified polypropylene.
- 11. A method of making a multicomponent fiber comprising the steps of:
- (a) directing respective melt flows of incompatible nylon and polyolefin polymers to a spinneret,
- (b) forming a multicomponent fiber by extruding the incompatible nylon and polyolefin polymers through orifices of the spinnerette to form a fiber having longitudinally coextensive first and second domains corresponding to said incompatible nylon and polyolefin polymers, respectively,
- (c) interposing a compatibilizing boundary layer formed of a grafted olefinic polymer in different from, but compatible with, each of said incompatible nylon and polyolefin polymers, and which is disposed longitudinally coextensively between said first and second polymer domains by coextruding said grafted olefinic polymer through said orifices of said spinnerette simultaneously with said extruding of the incompatible nylon and olefin polymers according to step (b).
- 12. The method of claim 11, further comprising the step of drawing the multicomponent fiber at least 10%.
- 13. The method of claim 11, wherein said first domain entirely surrounds said second domain, and wherein said boundary layer entirely surrounds said second domain.
- 14. The method of claim 11, wherein said multicomponent fiber is in the form of a trilobal fiber.
- 15. The method of claim 14, wherein said first domain is in the form of a nylon sheath domain, and wherein said second domain is in the form of at least three radially elongate core domains entirely surrounded by said sheath domain, and wherein said boundary layer is interposed between each of said core domains and said sheath domain.
- 16. The method of claim 11 or 15, wherein said grafted olefinic polymer is a maleic anhydride modified polypropylene.
