Claims
- 1. A process of manufacturing vitreous beads, comprising:
- delivering particulate feedstock to a heated chamber and passing it therethrough so that the feedstock is heated and converted to vitreous beads; and
- collecting the beads,
- wherein the heated chamber is shaped to provide a flow path for the particulate feedstock which comprises an elongate cross-section and which is arranged so that the particulate feedstock passes downwardly through the heated chamber under gravity from an upper end thereof to a lower end thereof, and
- wherein the particulate feedstock passing through the heated chamber is heated by radiant heating means which provides heat which emanates from the walls of the heated chamber.
- 2. The process according to claim 1, wherein a gas stream is caused to flow as a boundary layer along at least one wall of the heated chamber.
- 3. The process according to claim 2, wherein the boundary layer is formed by causing gas to flow through a porous wall of the heated chamber.
- 4. The process according to claim 1, wherein a non-oxidising atmosphere is maintained within the heated chamber.
- 5. The process according to claim 1, wherein the particulate feedstock is allowed to fall freely through the heated chamber.
- 6. The process according to claim 5, wherein the walls of the heated chamber are more widely spaced at the lower end of the heated chamber than at the upper end thereof.
- 7. The process according to claim 1, wherein the particulate feedstock is feed to the heated chamber from a fluidized bed.
- 8. The process according to claim 7, wherein the particulate feedstock is fed to the heated chamber by fluidized overflow from the fluidized bed.
- 9. The process according to claim 7, wherein the fluidized bed includes a fluidizing gas, which fluidizing gas is preheated.
- 10. The process according to claim 1, wherein the radiant heating means is electrical so that the heated chamber is heated electrically.
- 11. The process according to claim 1, wherein the heated chamber has a plurality of zones provided along the heated chamber, which plurality of zones are each heated to a different temperature.
- 12. The process according to claim 1, wherein the plurality of zones each has a zone temperature, which zone temperatures progressively increase in the direction of flow of the particulate feedstock through the heated chamber.
- 13. The process according to claim 1, wherein the vitreous beads are collected in a fluidized bed.
- 14. The process according to claim 1, wherein gas is aspirated away from the lower end of the heated chamber.
