Claims
- 1. A process of preparing a compound of the formula ##STR12## wherein R and R.sup.1 each independently represent hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, which comprises (1) reacting a compound of the formula ##STR13## wherein R.sup.3 represents a benzyl protecting group, R.sup.4 represents an alkyl group, and R.sup.5 represents a halogen atom in a solvent with a compound of formula ##STR14## wherein R and R.sup.1 have the meanings given above, to give a compound of formula ##STR15## wherein R, R.sup.1, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 have the meanings given above, (2) reducing said latter compound with an alkali metal borohydride to obtain a compound of formula ##STR16## wherein R, R.sup.1, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 have the meanings given above, (3) reducing said latter compound with a metal hydride to give a compound of formula ##STR17## wherein R, R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 have the meanings given above, and (4) removing the protecting benzyl group by hydrogenation in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the reduction in step 2 is carried out with sodium borohydride, the reduction in step 3 is carried out with lithium aluminum hydride, and the removal of the benzyl group in step 4 is carried out by hydrogenation in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst.
