Claims
- 1. The process of preparing fire-retardant natural and synthetic fibers and films comprising contacting the fiber or film with a brominated azido fire-retardant having the formula
- (Br).sub.x --R--[(R').sub.n --A].sub.y
- where R is selected from alkylene, polyalkylene, cycloalkylene, alkylene cycloalkylene, arylene, alkylene arylene, poly(alkenyl arylene), alkylene-oxy-alkylene, poly(alkylene oxide), alkylene-oxy-arylene, alkylene-oxy-cycloalkylene, cycloalkylene-oxy-cycloalkylene, poly(cycloalkylene oxide), cycloalkylene-oxy-arylene, arylene-oxy-arylene, poly(arylene oxide), arylene carboalkoxy, alkylene carboaryloxy, alkyl alkylene carboxylate, aryl alkylene carboxylate, alkylene carbonyl alkylene, alkylene carbonyl arylene, cycloalkylene carbonyl cycloalkylene and arylene carbonyl arylene radicals, where the alkyl and alkylene groups contain 1 to 18 carbon atoms; R' is selected from ##STR5## where R" is selected from alkylene, cycloalkylene, alkylene cycloalkylene, arylene, alkylene arylene, and the foregoing radicals with bromo substituents, where the alkylene groups contain 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and b is an integer from 1 to 10; A is selected from ##STR6## and --SO.sub.2 N.sub.3 where z is 0 or 1; x is at least 3; n is 0 or 1; and y is an integer from 1 to 100; and initiating a rection of the fire-retardant with the fiber or film by irradiation at a wavelength of from about 2,000 A to about 4,000 A.
- 2. The process of preparing fire-retardant natural and synthetic fibers comprising contacting the fiber or film with a brominated azido fire-retardant having the formula
- (Br).sub.x --R--[(R').sub.n --A].sub.y
- where R is selected from alkylene, polyalkylene, cycloalkylene, alkylene cycloalkylene, arylene, alkylene arylene, poly(alkenyl arylene), alkylene-oxy-alkylene, poly(alkylene oxide), alkylene-oxy-arylene, alkylene-oxy-cycloalkylene, cycloalkylene-oxy-cycloalkylene, poly(cycloalkylene oxide), cycloalkylene-oxy-arylene, arylene-oxy-arylene, poly(arylene oxide), arylene carboalkoxy, alkylene carboaryloxy, alkyl alkylene carboxylate, aryl alkylene carboxylate, alkylene carbonyl alkylene, alkylene carbonyl arylene, cycloalkylene carbonyl cycloalkylene and arylene carbonyl arylene radicals, where the alkyl and alkylene groups contain 1 to 18 carbon atoms; R' is selected from ##STR7## where R" is selected from alkylene, cycloalkylene, alkylene cycloalkylene, arylene, alkylene arylene, and the foregoing radicals with bromo substituents, where the alkylene groups contain 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and b is an integer from 1 to 10; A is selected from ##STR8## and --SO.sub.2 N.sub.3 where z is 0 or 1; x is at least 3; n is 0 or 1; and y is an integer from 1 to 100; and initiating a reaction of the fire-retardant with the fiber or film by heating.
- 3. The process of claim 1 where A is ##STR9##
- 4. The process of claim 1 where A is --SO.sub.2 N.sub.3.
- 5. The process of claim 1 where fire-retardant natural fibers are prepared.
- 6. The process of claim 5 where the natural fibers are cotton.
- 7. The process of claim 5 where the natural fibers are wool.
- 8. The process of claim 1 where fire-retardant synthetic fibers are prepared.
- 9. The process of claim 8 where the synthetic fibers are polypropylene.
- 10. The process of claim 8 where the synthetic fibers are polyesters.
- 11. The process of claim 1 where fire-retardant synthetic films are prepared.
- 12. The process of claim 2 where A is ##STR10##
- 13. The process of claim 2 where A is --SO.sub.2 N.sub.3.
- 14. The process of claim 2 where fire-retardant natural fibers are prepared.
- 15. The process of claim 14 where the natural fibers are cotton.
- 16. The process of claim 14 where the natural fibers are wool.
- 17. The process of claim 2 where fire-retardant synthetic fibers are prepared.
- 18. The process of claim 17 where the synthetic fibers are polypropylene.
- 19. The process of claim 17 where the synthetic fibers are polyesters.
- 20. The process of claim 2 where fire-retardant synthetic films are prepared.
- 21. A fire retardant material prepared by treating a natural or synthetic fiber or film with a brominated azido fire-retardant having the formula (Br).sub.x --R--[(R').sub.n --A].sub.y where R is selected from alkylene, polyalkylene, cycloalkylene, alkylene cycloalkylene, arylene, alkylene arylene, poly(alkenyl arylene), alkylene-oxy-alkylene, poly(alkylene oxide), alkylene-oxy-arylene, alkylene-oxy-cycloalkylene, cycloalkylene-oxy-cycloalkylene, poly(cycloalkylene oxide), cycloalkylene-oxy-arylene, arylene-oxy-arylene, poly(arylene oxide), arylene carboalkoxy, alkylene carboaryloxy, alkyl alkylene carboxylate, aryl alkylene carboxylate, alkylene carbonyl alkylene, alkylene carbonyl arylene, cycloalkylene carbonyl cycloalkylene and arylene carbonyl arylene radicals, where the alkyl and alkylene groups contain 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R' is selected from ##STR11## where R" is selected from alkylene cycloalkylene, alkylene cycloalkylene, arylene, alkylene arylene, and the foregoing radicals with bromo substituents, where the alkylene groups contain 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and b is an integer from 1 to 10; A is selected from ##STR12## and --SO.sub.2 N.sub.3 where z is 0 or 1; x is at least 3; n is 0 or 1; and y is an integer from 1 to 100.
