Claims
- 1. A method of preparing a linear, unbranched, noncross-linked polymer comprising repeating units of the formula ##STR16## where m is the integer 1 or 0, R' is hydrogen, loweralkyl, phenyl, naphthyl, or naphthylethyl, Q is trimethylene and Z.sup.- is a counter anion comprising reacting a polymer comprising repeating units of the formula ##STR17## where R' and Q are as previously defined with at least a molar equivalent of a chemical reductant, and where m is 1 adding mineral acid HZ.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 where the chemical reductant is diborane.
- 3. A method of preparing a linear unbranched noncross-linked polymer comprising repeating units of the formula ##STR18## where Q is trimethylene, and Z.sup.- is a counteranion comprising admixing a polymer comprising repeating units of the formula ##STR19## where Q is trimethylene with more than one equivalent each of formaldehyde and formic acid and heating the resulting admixture at a temperature of from 30.degree. to 100.degree. C. for up to 100 hours and adding mineral acid HZ.
- 4. A method according to claim 3 where a mixture of 97 to 100% formic acid and aqueous formaldehyde is employed and, followed the heating of said admixture, there is then added to the reaction mixture an aqueous mineral acid HZ, and the aqueous acidic mixture is subjected to distillation under reduced pressure thereby removing reagents and by-products.
- 5. A method of preparing a linear unbranched noncross-linked polymer comprising repeating units of the formula ##STR20## where Q is trimethylene and Z.sup.- is a counteranion comprising admixing a polymer comprising repeating units of the formula ##STR21## with an excess of formaldehyde and formic acid, and heating the resulting admixture to a temperature of from 30.degree. to 100.degree. C. for up to 100 hours wherein a mixture of 97 to 100% formic acid and aqueous formaldehyde is employed and, following the heating of said admixture, there is then added to the reaction mixture an aqueous mineral acid HZ, and the aqueous acidic mixture is subjected to distillation under reduced pressure thereby removing reagents and by-products.
- 6. A method for making a first linear, unbranched non-cross-linked polymer comprising repeating units of the formula ##STR22## where Z.sup.- is a counteranion, Q is trimethylene, m is the integer 0 or 1, indicates bonding to a plurality of the groups ##STR23## where Z.sup.-, Q, and m are as previously defined and R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are the same or different and are loweralkyl; monohydroxy-substituted loweralkyl, polyhydroxy substituted C.sub.3 to C.sub.6 alkyl and polyhydroxy-substituted C.sub.3 to C.sub.6 cycloalkyl; C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl; C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl substituted loweralkyl; loweralkyl-substituted C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl; ammonioloweralkyl; loweralkylammonioloweralkyl; diloweralkylammonioloweralkyl; triloweralkylammonioloweralkyl; carboxyloweralkyl; carboloweralkoxyloweralkyl; C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 alkenyl; C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 alkynyl; aralkyl; carbamyloweralkyl; fluoroloweralkyl; cyanoloweralkyl; guanidinoloweralkyl; carbamidinoloweralkyl; N-loweralkylcarbamidinoloweralkyl; loweralkoxyloweralkyl; loweralkylthioloweralkyl; furanosyl; pyranosyl; and loweralkanoylloweralkyl; comprising reacting a second polymer comprising repeating units of the formula ##STR24## where Q is as previously defined with: (a) when R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are alike, at least 1.5 equivalents of RX where R is R.sub.3 or R.sub.4 and X is halide or sulfonate, sulfate in an inert solvent at a temperature of from 30.degree. C. to 100.degree. C. and (b) when R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are different, first reacting the second polymer with less than an equivalent of R.sub.3 X in an inert solvent followed by reacting with an amount of a base which is matching to the equivalents of R.sub.3 X employed to form a third polymer; then reacting said third polymer in an inert solvent with a reactant R.sub.4 X such that the amounts of R.sub.3 X and R.sub.4 X employed are substantially equivalent to the equivalents of repeating formula units in said second polymer.
- 7. A method for making a first linear, unbranched non-cross-linked polymer comprising repeating units of the formula ##STR25## where X.sup.- is a halide, sulfate or sulfonate, Q is trimethylene, and indicates bonding to a plurality of the groups ##STR26## where X.sup.- and Q are as previously defined and R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are the same or different and are loweralkyl; monohydroxy-substituted loweralkyl, polyhydroxy substituted C.sub.3 to C.sub.6 alkyl and polyhydroxy-substituted C.sub.3 to C.sub.6 cycloalkyl; C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl; C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl-substituted loweralkyl; loweralkyl substituted C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl; ammonioloweralkyl; loweralkylammonioloweralkyl; diloweralkylammonioloweralkyl; triloweralkylammonioloweralkyl; carboxyloweralkyl; carboloweralkoxyloweralkyl; C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 alkenyl; C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 alkynyl; aralkyl; carbamyloweralkyl; fluoroloweralkyl; cyanoloweralkyl; guanidinoloweralkyl; carbamidinoloweralkyl; N-loweralkylcarbamidinoloweralkyl; loweralkoxyloweralkyl; loweralkylthioloweralkyl; furanosyl; pyranosyl; and loweralkanoylloweralkyl; and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and are hydrogen, loweralkyl; monohydroxy-substituted loweralkyl, polyhydroxy-substituted C.sub.3 to C.sub.6 alkyl and polyhydroxy-substituted C.sub.3 to C.sub.6 cycloalkyl; C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl; C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl-substituted loweralkyl; loweralkyl-substituted C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 cycloalkyl; ammonioloweralkyl, loweralkylammonioloweralkyl; diloweralkylammonioloweralkyl; triloweralkylammonioloweralkyl; carboxyloweralkyl; carboloweralkoxyloweralkyl; C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 alkenyl; C.sub.3 to C.sub.7 alkynyl; aralkyl; carbamylloweralkyl; fluoroloweralkyl; cyanoloweralkyl; guanidinoloweralkyl; carbamidinoloweralkyl; N-loweralkylcarbamidinoloweralkyl; loweralkoxyloweralkyl; loweralkylthioloweralkyl; furanosyl; pyranosyl; and loweralkanoylloweralkyl; comprising reacting a second polymer comprising repeating units of the formula ##STR27## where R.sub.3, R.sub.4, and Q are as previously defined and indicates bonding to a plurality of the groups ##STR28## with: (a) when R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are alike at least an equivalent of RX where R is R.sub.1 and X is halide, sulfonate or sulfate;
- (b) when R.sub.1 is different from R.sub.2, reacting the second polymer first with from 5 to 95% of one equivalent of R.sub.1 X, followed by reacting with at least one equivalent of R.sub.2 X.
- 8. A method according to claim 7 wherein R.sub.1 or R.sub.2 are ammonioalkyl; loweralkylammonioloweralkyl; diloweralkylammonioloweralkyl; and triloweralkylammonioloweralkyl where said ammonio cation is countered with an anion Z.sup.-.
- 9. A method according to claim 7 where R.sub.1 or R.sub.2 are hydroxy-substituted loweralkyl and hydroxy substituted cycloloweralkyl.
- 10. A method according to claim 7 where R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are methyl, and said first polymer is poly-[{methyl-(3-trimethylammoniopropyl)iminio}trimethylene dichloride].
- 11. A method according to claim 7 where R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are methyl, and said first polymer is poly-[{(methyl-(3-hydroxypropyl)iminio}trimethylene chloride].
- 12. A method according to claim 7 where R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are methyl, and said first polymer is poly-[{methyl-(3-methoxypropyl)iminio}trimethylene chloride].
- 13. A method according to claim 7 where R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are methyl, and said first polymer is poly-[{methyl-(2-oxopropyl)iminio}trimethylene chloride].
- 14. A method according to claim 7 where R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are methyl, and said first polymer is poly-[{methyl(carboethoxymethyl)iminio}trimethylene chloride].
- 15. A method according to claim 7 where R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are methyl.
