Claims
- 1. A process comprising trimerizing olefins in the presence of an activating compound selected from the group consisting of non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl compounds and Lewis acids and in the presence of a catalyst prepared by a process consisting essentially of forming a mixture of:
- (a) a chromium source selected from the group consisting of a chromium salt having the formula CrX.sub.n, wherein X can be the same or different and is an organic or inorganic radical and n is an integer from 1 to 6, and chromium metal;
- (b) a metal amide having from about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms per molecule and is selected from the group consisting of secondary amines, any alkali metal amide, and any alkaline earth metal amide, and mixtures of two or more thereof; and
- (c) an electron pair donor solvent that can affect a reaction between the chromium source and the metal amide.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein said activating compound is a non-hydrolyzed trialkylaluminum compound.
- 3. A process according to claim 2 wherein said trialkylaluminum compound is triethylaluminum.
- 4. A process according to claim 1 wherein said activating compound and said catalyst are supported on an inorganic oxide support.
- 5. A process comprising trimerizing olefins in the presence of a composition consisting essentially of Cr.sub.5 (C.sub.4 H.sub.4 N).sub.10 (C.sub.4 H.sub.8 O).sub.4, supported on an inorganic oxide and an activating compound selected from the group consisting of non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl compounds and Lewis acids.
- 6. A process comprising trimerizing olefins in the presence of a composition consisting essentially of Cr.sub.5 (C.sub.4 H.sub.4 N).sub.4 Na.sub.2. 2(OC.sub.4 H.sub.8).sub.4 supported on an inorganic oxide and an activating compound selected from the group consisting of non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl compounds and Lewis acids.
- 7. A process comprising trimerizing olefins in the presence of a composition consisting essentially of Cr(C.sub.4 H.sub.4 N).sub.5 (OC.sub.4 H.sub.8)Na.sub.2. 4(OC.sub.4 H.sub.8) supported on an inorganic oxide and an activating compound selected from the group consisting of non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl compounds and Lewis acids.
- 8. A process to trimerize olefins comprising contacting an olefin with a catalyst prepared by the steps consisting essentially of:
- (a) forming a mixture of a chromium source selected from the group consisting of a chromium salt having the formula CrX.sub.n, wherein X can be the same or different and is an organic or inorganic radical and n is an integer from 1 to 6, and chromium metal; a metal amide having from about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms per molecule and is selected from the group consisting of primary amines, secondary amines, alkali metal amides, alkaline earth metal amides and mixtures thereof; and an electron pair donor solvent that can effect the reaction between the chromium source and the metal amide;
- (b) recovering a chromium-containing compound from the mixture of (a);
- (c) reacting the chromium-containing compound of (b) with an aromatic compound and an activating compound selected from the group consisting of non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl compounds and Lewis acids to form a reaction product;
- (d) adding an inorganic oxide to the reaction product of (c); and
- (e) recovering a solid product.
- 9. A process comprising trimerizing olefins in the presence of a catalyst system prepared by the steps consisting essentially of:
- (a) forming a mixture of a chromium source selected from the group consisting of a chromium salt having the formula CrX.sub.n, wherein X can be the same or different and is an organic or inorganic radical and n is an integer from 1 to 6, and chromium metal, a metal amide having from about 1 to 20 carbon atoms per molecule and is selected from the group consisting of primary amines, secondary amines, alkali metal amides, alkaline earth metal amides and mixtures thereof, and an electron pair donor solvent which can effect the reaction between the chromium source and the metal amide;
- (b) adding an inorganic oxide to the mixture of (a) to form a slurry;
- (c) recovering a solid product; and
- (d) adding an activating compound selected from the group consisting of non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl compounds and Lewis acids to the solid product of (c).
- 10. A process to trimerize olefins comprising contacting an olefin with a catalyst system consisting essentially of Cr(NC.sub.4 H.sub.4).sub.3 Cl(O.sub.2 C.sub.2 H.sub.4 (CH.sub.3).sub.2).sub.3 Na supported on an inorganic oxide and an activating compound selected from the group consisting of non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl compounds and Lewis acids.
- 11. A process comprising trimerizing olefins with a catalyst composition
- (a) a chromium source selected from the group consisting of a chromium salt having the formula CrX.sub.n, wherein X can be the same or different and is an organic or inorganic radical and n is an integer from one to six, and chromium metal;
- (b) a pyrrole-containing compound;
- (c) a non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl; and
- (d) an unsaturated hydrocarbon.
- 12. A process comprising trimerizing olefins with a catalyst composition
- (a) a chromium source selected from the group consisting of a chromium salt having the formula CrX.sub.n, wherein X can be the same or different and is an organic or inorganic radical and n is an integer from one to six, and chromium metal;
- (b) a pyrrole-containing compound;
- (c) a non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl; and
- (d) an unsaturated hydrocarbon,
- wherein said catalyst composition further comprises an inorganic oxide support.
- 13. A process comprising trimerizing olefins with a catalyst composition
- (a) a chromium source selected from the group consisting of a chromium salt having the formula CrX.sub.n, wherein X can be the same or different and is an organic or inorganic radical and n is an integer from one to six, and chromium metal;
- (b) a pyrrole-containing compound;
- (c) a non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl;
- (d) an unsaturated hydrocarbon; and
- (e) a halide selected from the group consisting of fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, and mixtures thereof.
- 14. A trimerization process according to claim 11 wherein said olefin is selected from the group consisting of compounds having from about 2 to about 30 carbon atoms per molecule and at least 1 olefinic double bond.
- 15. A trimerization process according to claim 14 wherein said olefin compound is selected from the group consisting of ethylene, 1-butene, 1-hexene, 1,3-butadiene, and mixtures thereof.
- 16. A trimerization process according to claim 15 wherein said olefin is ethylene.
- 17. A process comprising oligomerizing olefins with a catalyst composition
- (a) a chromium source selected from the group consisting of a chromium salt having the formula CrX.sub.n, wherein X can be the same or different and is an organic or inorganic radical and n is an integer from one to six, and chromium metal;
- (b) a pyrrole-containing compound;
- (c) a non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl; and
- (d) an unsaturated hydrocarbon.
- 18. A process comprising oligomerizing olefins with a catalyst composition
- (a) a chromium source selected from the group consisting of a chromium salt having the formula CrX.sub.n, wherein X can be the same or different and is an organic or inorganic radical and n is an integer from one to six, and chromium metal;
- (b) a pyrrole-containing compound;
- (c) a non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl;
- (d) an unsaturated hydrocarbon; and
- (e) a halide selected from the group consisting of fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, and mixtures thereof.
- 19. A process according to claim 12 wherein said inorganic oxide is selected from the group consisting of titania, silica-titania, coprecipitated silica and titania, and mixtures thereof.
- 20. A process to trimerize olefins comprising contacting an olefin with a catalyst prepared according to the steps consisting essentially of:
- (a) forming a reaction mixture of a chromium source selected from the group consisting of a chromium salt having the formula CrX.sub.n, wherein X can be the same or different and is an organic or inorganic radical and n is an integer from 1 to 6, and chromium metal; a metal amide having from about 1 to 20 carbon atoms per molecule selected from the group consisting of primary amines, secondary amines, any alkali metal amide, and any alkaline earth metal amide, and mixtures thereof; and a Lewis acid which can effect the reaction between the chromium source and the metal amide;
- (b) recovering a chromium-containing compound from the mixture of (a); and
- (c) reacting the chromium-containing compound of (b) with an unsaturated hydrocarbon and an activating compound selected from the group consisting of non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl compounds and Lewis acids.
- 21. A process comprising trimerizing olefins with a composition consisting essentially of contacting:
- (a) a chromium source selected from the group consisting of a chromium salt having the formula CrX.sub.n, wherein X can be the same or different and is an organic or inorganic radical and n is an integer from 1 to 6, and chromium metal;
- (b) a pyrrole-containing compound;
- (c) a non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl; and
- (d) an unsaturated hydrocarbon.
- 22. A process according to claim 21, wherein said composition further comprises an inorganic oxide support.
- 23. A process according to claim 21, wherein said composition further comprises a halide selected from the group consisting of fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, and mixtures thereof.
- 24. A process according to claim 21 wherein said olefin is selected from the group consisting of compounds having from about 2 to about 30 carbon atoms per molecule and at least 1 olefinic double bond.
- 25. A process according to claim 24 wherein said olefin compound is selected from the group consisting of ethylene, 1-butene, 1-hexene, 1,3-butadiene, and mixtures thereof.
- 26. A process according to claim 25 wherein said olefin is ethylene.
- 27. A process comprising oligomerizing olefins with a composition consisting essentially of contacting:
- (a) a chromium source selected from the group consisting of a chromium salt having the formula CrX.sub.n, wherein X can be the same or different and is an organic or inorganic radical and n is an integer from 1 to 6, and chromium metal;
- (b) a pyrrole-containing compound;
- (c) a non-hydrolyzed aluminum alkyl; and
- (d) an unsaturated hydrocarbon.
- 28. A process according to claim 27, wherein said composition further comprises an inorganic oxide support.
