Claims
- 1. A process for the recovery of vanadium from a sulphur-containing material of the group consisting of coke derived from hydrocarbonaceous oil and ash obtained from said coke, wherein said hydrocarbonaceous oil is heavy oil, in-situ oil sands bitumen or mineable oil sands bitumen, comprising:
- (a) mixing said material with an alkali metal carbonate reagent in a finely divided form,
- (b) heating the mixture in the presence of an oxidizing atmosphere at an elevated temperature below the fusion point of the reagent,
- (c) contacting the resulting solid residue and water to form a leach solution, and
- (d) recovering the vanadium values from the leach solution, wherein said material comprises vitrified materials and the amount of said alkali metal carbonate is at least twice the combined stoichiometric amount sufficient both to convert the vanadium values present in said material into alkali metal vanadate and to react with the sulphur present in said material, and insufficient to cause the substantial carryover of said alkali metal carbonate into said leach solution.
- 2. A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the amount of said alkali metal carbonate is at least ten times the vanadium stoichiometric amount sufficient to convert the vanadium values present in said material into alkali metal vanadate.
- 3. A process as claimed in claim 2 wherein the amount of said alkali metal carbonate is at least fifteen times said vanadium stoichiometric amount.
- 4. A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the amount of said alkali metal carbonate is at least three times said combined stoichiometric amount.
- 5. A process as claimed in claim 1, wherein said material is fly ash.
- 6. A process as claimed in claim 5, wherein said fly ash contains about 1.5 percent vanadium and 2.5 percent sulphur, and the amount of said alkali metal carbonate is at least three times said combined stoichiometric amount.
- 7. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein said heating step is carried out at a temperature between 500.degree. C. and 850.degree. C.
- 8. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein said mixture is heated for a time from 0.2 to 5 hours.
- 9. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein said alkali metal carbonate is sodium carbonate.
