A process for selectively preparing a salt which comprises contacting isoxazole with a base of a strength equal to or greater than sodium methoxide in an inert organic solvent at a temperature less than or equal to about -40.degree. C., the anion of said salt being the anion of cis-1-cyano-2-hydroxyethylene and the cation of said salt being the positive portion of said base.
- 2. A process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the base is potassium tert-butoxide and the solvent is tetrahydrofuran.
- 3. A process for selectively preparing a salt which comprises contacting isotazole with a base of a strength equal to or greater than sodium methoxide in an inert organic solvent at a temperature less than or equal to about -20.degree. C. and the isoxazole is precooled to a temperature less than or equal to about -20.degree.
