Claims
- 1. A process for the formation of .alpha.-olefins containing 4 to 40 carbon atoms, comprising, contacting, at a temperature of about -100.degree. C. to about +200.degree.C.:
- ethylene;
- a first compound W, which is a neutral Lewis acid capable of abstracting X.sup.- to form WX.sup.-, provided that the anion formed is a weakly coordinating anion, or a cationic Lewis or Bronsted acid whose counterion is a weakly coordinating anion; and
- a second compound of the formula ##STR93## wherein: R.sup.2 and R.sup.5 are each independently hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl;
- R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are each independently hydrogen, substituted hydrocarbyl, hydrocarbyl, or R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 taken together are hydrocarbylene or substituted hydrocarbylene to form a ring; and
- Q and S are each independently chlorine, bromine, iodine or alkyl; and
- wherein an .alpha.-olefin containing 4 to 40 carbon atoms is produced.
- 2. The process as recited in claim 1 wherein said .alpha.-olefin is linear.
- 3. The process as recited in claim 2 wherein said linear .alpha.-olefin has the formula H.sub.2 C.dbd.CHR.sup.1, wherein R.sup.1 is n-alkyl containing 2 to 30 carbon atoms.
- 4. The process as recited in claim 3 wherein R.sup.3 and R.sub.4 are hydrogen, methyl or 1,8-naphthylylene.
- 5. The process as recited in claim 4 wherein said first compound is R.sup.9.sub.3 Al, R.sup.9.sub.2 AlCl, R.sup.9 AlCl.sub.2, or R.sup.9 AlO, R.sup.9.sub.3 Al.sub.2 Cl.sub.3, wherein R.sup.9 is alkyl containing 1 to 25 carbon atoms.
- 6. The process as recited in claim 2 wherein R.sup.2 and R.sup.5 are phenyl.
- 7. The process as recited in claim 2 wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are hydrogen, methyl or 1,8-naphthylylene.
- 8. The process as recited in claim 2 wherein said first compound is an alkyl aluminum compound.
- 9. The process as recited in claim 8 wherein said alkyl aluminum compound is R.sup.9.sub.3 Al, R.sup.9.sub.2 AlCl, R.sup.9 AlCl.sub.2, R.sup.9.sub.3 Al.sub.2 Cl.sub.3, or R.sup.9 AlO, wherein R.sup.9 is alkl containing 1 to 25 carbon atoms.
- 10. The process as recited in claim 9 wherein R.sup.9 contains 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
- 11. The process as recited in claim 2 wherein R.sup.2 and R.sup.5 are each independently hydrocarbyl, provided that the carbon atom bound to the imino nitrogen atom has at least two carbon atoms bound to it; and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are each independently hydrogen, hydrocarbyl, or R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 taken together are hydrocarbylene to form a ring.
- 12. The process as recited in claim 7 carried out at a temperature of about 25.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C.
- 13. The process as recited in claim 1 wherein a partial pressure of said ethylene is about atmospheric pressure to about 275 MPa.
- 14. A process for the formation of .alpha.-olefins containing 4 to 40 carbon atoms, comprising, contacting, at a temperature of about -100.degree. C. to about +200.degree. C.:
- ethylene and a compound of the formula ##STR94## wherein: R.sup.2 and R.sup.5 are each independently hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl;
- R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are each independently hydrogen, substituted hydrocarbyl, hydrocarbyl, or R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 taken together are hydrocarbylene or substituted hydrocarbylene to form a ring;
- T.sup.1 is hydrogen or n-alkyl containing up to 38 carbon atoms;
- Z is a neutral Lewis base wherein the donating atom is nitrogen, sulfur, or oxygen, provided that if the donating atom is nitrogen then the pKa of the conjugate acid of that compound (measured in water) is less than about 6;
- U is n-alkyl containing up to 38 carbon atoms; and
- X is a noncoordinating anion;
- and wherein an .alpha.-olefin containing 4 to 40 carbon atoms is produced.
- 15. A process for the formation of .alpha.-olefins containing 4 to 40 carbon atoms, comprising, contacting, at a temperature of about -100.degree. C. to about +200.degree. C.:
- ethylene;
- and a Ni compound of ##STR95## R.sup.2 and R.sup.5 are each independently hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl, provided that the carbon atom bound to the imino nitrogen atom has at least two carbon atoms bound to it;
- R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are each independently hydrogen, hydrocarbyl, substituted hydrocarbyl, or R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 taken together are hydrocarbylene or substituted hydrocarbylene to form a carbocyclic ring and
- wherein an .alpha.-olefin containing 4 to 40 carbon atoms is produced.
- 16. The process as recited in claim 15 wherein said .alpha.-olefin is linear.
- 17. The process as recited in claim 16 wherein said linear .alpha.-olefin has the formula H.sub.2 C.dbd.CHR.sup.1, wherein R.sup.1 is n-alkyl containing 2 to 30 carbon atoms.
- 18. The process as recited in claim 17 wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are hydrogen, methyl or 1,8-naphthylylene.
- 19. The process as recited in claim 16 wherein R.sup.2 and R.sup.5 are phenyl.
- 20. The process as recited in claim 16 wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are hydrogen, methyl or 1,8-naphthylylene.
- 21. The process as recited in claim 16 carried out at a temperature of about 25.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C.
- 22. The process as recited in claim 16 wherein a partial pressure of said ethylene is about atmospheric pressure to about 275 MPa.
- 23. The process as recited in claim 16 wherein R.sup.2 and R.sup.5 are each independently hydrocarbyl, provided that the carbon atom bound to the imino nitrogen atom has at least two carbon atoms bound to it; and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are each independently hydrogen, hydrocarbyl, or R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 taken together are hydrocarbylene to form a ring.
