Claims
- 1. A process for preparing an organophilic clay gellant comprising:
- a) preparing a slurry of a smectite-type clay having a cation exchange capacity of at least 75 milliequivalents per 100 grams of clay;
- b) reacting the smectite-type clay with organic cation in an amount ranging from about 90 to about 150 percent of the cation exchange capacity of the clay whereby at least some of the cation exchange sites of the smectite-type clay are substituted with organic cation thereby forming an organophilic clay gellant;
- c) separating the organophilic clay gellant from the slurry thereby forming a liquid;
- d) treating the liquid so as to reduce the amount of electrolyte formed from the preparation of the organophilic clay gellant by at least 75%; and
- e) recycling the liquid for use in the preparation of further smectite-type clay slurry.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the liquid is treated so as to reduce the amount of said electrolyte by at least 85%.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the liquid is treated so as to reduce the amount of said electrolyte by at least 95%.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the slurry is subjected to high shear conditions whereby clay agglomerates are separated before the smectite-type clay is reacted with the organic cation.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the slurry contains from about 0.5 to about 2.5 percent by weight of the smectite-type clay.
- 6. The process of claim 1 wherein the separated organophilic clay gellant is dried such that the temperature of the wet organophilic clay does not exceed about 50.degree. C.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein the organophilic clay gellant is dried in an airstream having a temperature in the range of from about 25.degree. to about 50.degree. C.
- 8. The process of claim 7 wherein the airstream has a temperature in the range of from about 35.degree. to about 45.degree. C.
- 9. The process of claim 6 wherein the organophilic clay gellant is dried in a fluidized bed.
- 10. The process of claim 6 wherein the organophilic clay gellant is dried by freeze drying.
- 11. The process of claim 1 wherein the liquid is treated by passing the liquid through at least one of a cation exchange resin in hydrogen form and an anion exchange resin in hydroxyl form.
- 12. The process of claim 11 wherein an organic anion derived from a compound having a pKa less than about 11.0 is mixed with the organic cation and the smectite-type clay and wherein the liquid is treated with both the cation exchange resin and the anion exchange resin.
- 13. The process of claim 11 wherein the separated organophilic clay gellant is repulped, separated from the repulping liquid and the separated repulping liquid is passed through at least one of the cation exchange resin and anion exchange resin.
- 14. The process of claim 11 wherein the separated organophilic clay gellant is repulped, separated from the repulping liquid, the separated repulping liquid is mixed with liquid from the first separation of the organophilic clay and the combined liquids are passed through at least one of the cation exchange resin and anion exchange resin.
