Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of a compound of formula I ##STR21## in which each R independently of one another is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -halogenalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkylthio, phenylthio, benzylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkylsulfonyl, phenyl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.15 -alkylphenyl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.10 -phenylalkyl, C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl, halogen, --NO.sub.2, --CN, --COOH, --COO--(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl), --OH, --NH.sub.2, --NHR.sup.6, --N(R.sup.6).sub.2, --CONH.sub.2, --CONHR.sup.6 or --CON(R.sup.6).sub.2,
- R.sup.1 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl, phenyl, phenyl which is substituted by halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy or --NO.sub.2, pyridyl, thienyl, or furyl,
- R.sup.2 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl,
- R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 independently of one another are hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, cyano, nitro, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 -alkyl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --COOR.sup.7, --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --CONHR.sup.6, --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --CON(R.sup.6).sub.2, C.sub.3 -C.sub.20 -alkenyl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.10 -phenylalkyl, phenyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl or a group of the formula II ##STR22## R.sup.5 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.20 -alkenyl or hydroxy, or R.sup.3 and R.sup.5 together or R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 together form a ring fused to the phenolic moiety which ring may be a carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring containing oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur as heteroatoms, each ring being optionally substituted by C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy or halogen,
- R.sup.6 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.12 -alkyl which is interrupted by one or more 0 atoms, C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl, benzyl, phenyl, or phenyl which is substituted by halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy or nitro, or --N(R.sup.6).sub.2 is a pyrrolidino, piperidino or morpholino group,
- R.sup.7 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 -alkyl, which may be substituted by halogen or hydroxyl or R.sup.7 is C.sub.3 -C.sub.20 -alkyl which is interrupted by one or more oxygen atoms and may be substituted by hydroxyl and m is 0, 1 or 2,
- which process comprises
- reacting a 2-mercaptobenzothiazole of formula VI ##STR23## and a carbonyl compound R.sup.1 --CO--R.sup.2 with a phenol of formula VIII ##STR24## in the presence of a basic catalyst, where R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are as defined above.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the reaction is carried out in a polar solvent.
