Claims
- 1. An oligomerization process which comprises the continuous and concurrent addition of:

- R.sub.2 is selected from H or CH.sub.3
- R.sub.3 is (CH.sub.2).sub.n X.sub.1
- n is an integer ranging from 0 to 8
- X.sub.1 is selected from a halogen, CO.sub.2 H, CO.sub.2 R.sub.5, C.tbd.N or ##STR6## R.sub.4 is an alkyl group having one to four carbon atoms, R.sub.5 is selected from any alkyl group having one to four carbon atoms or a polar moiety containing ether or sulfide or sulfinyl or hydroxyl or amine or amide groups or combinations thereof. containing as many as 12 carbon atoms,
- Y is selected from -NZ'Z" O(CH.sub.2).sub.m -NZ'Z", O(CH.sub.2).sub.m C-NZ'Z", --NHNZ'Z" or --N.sup.- N.sup.+ Z.sub.3 '",
- m is an integer from 1 to 12,
- Z' is hydrogen or an alkyl group, straight or branched, of 1 to 20 carbon atoms,
- Z" is hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms,
- Z'" is an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and Z' and Z" can be taken together to form an azacyloalkyl ring, an azacycloalkanone ring, a carbalkoxyazacycloalkanone ring, an oxaazacycloalkanone ring or a diazacycloalkanone ring, and
- b. from about 1 to about 45 percent by weight of a derivative of acrylic acid having the formula 1 ##STR7## wherein X.sub.2 is selected from hydrogen or a methyl group, and R.sub.6 is a straight or branched, 8 to 34 carbon atom, alkyl group to a mixture of:
- c. from about 0.01 to about 10 percent by weight of the materials being polymerized of a free radical initiator, and
- d. from about 10 to about 90 percent by weight of at least one straight or branched alkene-1 having four to thirty-two carbon atoms, said addition being carried out as such a rate that the substantially instantaneous mole ratio in the reaction mixture of said acid derivatives to the alkene-1 is maintained relatively constant at from about 0.001 to about 0.20 during said addition, and said addition being carried out at a temperature which will not impair the oligomerization.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said mole ratio in the reaction mixture of said derivative to said alkene-1 is from about 0.01 to about 0.20 during said addition.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein a minor portion of said alkene-1 is substituted by an omega unsaturated ester, amide or carboxylic acid.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the temperature of the reaction mixture during said addition is from about 100.degree. C to about 200.degree. C.
