Claims
- 1. An apparatus for receiving data transmitted over a cable television network, the network including a transmission medium and having forward channels for transmission of video signals having a rasterized format, the format having a bandwidth and active video intervals, the active video intervals separated by horizontal blanking intervals, at least one of the forward channels transmitting a combined signal of a data signal frequency interleaved with the bandwidth of a video signal in active intervals, subchannels and a control channel, the apparatus comprising:
- a video receiver having a tuner for selecting between forward channels;
- a control channel receiver responsive to the control channel;
- a tunable subchannel transmitter; and
- a controller responsive to control signals transmitted over the control channel for altering the selection of the forward channel and the tuning of the subchannel transmitter.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, the apparatus further including means for extracting the data signal from the received combined signal.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the bandwidth includes luminance and chrominance spectra, the chrominance spectra having a chrominance subcarrier, and wherein the data signal portion of the combined signal is frequency interleaved with the video signal in the bandwidth at a frequency greater than the chrominance subcarrier.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the bandwidth includes luminance and chrominance spectra, the chrominance spectra having a vestigial chrominance sideband, and wherein the data signal portion of the combined signal is frequency interleaved with the video signal in the bandwidth so that the data signal lies substantially within the vestigial chrominance sideband.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the bandwidth includes luminance and chrominance components, and wherein the data signal portion of the combined signal is modulated with a carrier at an odd quarter, non-integral multiple of the frequency of the raster rate of the video signal so that the spectral energy of the modulated carrier is frequency interleaved with the chrominance and luminance components of the video signal.
- 6. A method of receiving data transmitted over a cable television network, the network including a transmission medium and having forward channels for transmission of video signals having a rasterized format, the format having a bandwidth and active video intervals, the active video intervals separated by horizontal blanking intervals, at least one of the forward channels transmitting a combined signal of a data signal frequency interleaved with the bandwidth of a video signal in active intervals, subchannels and a control channel, the method comprising:
- receiving the combined signal at a video receiver having a tuner for selecting between forward channels;
- receiving a control channel signal at a control channel receiver;
- tuning a subchannel transmitter responsive to the received control channel signal;
- altering the selection of the forward channel responsive to the control signal; and
- transmitting data from the subchannel transmitter.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein the bandwidth includes luminance and chrominance spectra, the chrominance spectra having a chrominance subcarrier, and wherein the data signal portion of the combined signal is frequency interleaved with the video signal in the bandwidth at a frequency greater than the chrominance subcarrier.
- 8. The method of claim 6, wherein the bandwidth includes luminance and chrominance spectra, the chrominance spectra having a vestigial chrominance sideband, and wherein the data signal portion of the combined signal is frequency interleaved with the video signal in the bandwidth so that the data signal lies substantially within the vestigial chrominance sideband.
- 9. The method of claim 6, wherein the bandwidth includes luminance and chrominance components, and wherein the data signal portion of the combined signal is modulated with a carrier at an odd quarter, non-integral multiple of the frequency of the raster rate of the video signal so that the spectral energy of the modulated carrier is frequency interleaved with the chrominance and luminance components of the video signal.
- 10. The method of claim 6, the method further including extracting the data signal from the received combined signal.
