1. Field of the Invention
The present invention is generally related to product packaging, and more particularly to a product packaging having an external sample of the product contained within the packaging and a method of making the same.
2. Discussion of Related Art
Many mechanisms are used in order to inform and/or guide purchasers of products. For example, trademarks, logos, slogans and other identifying information can be used to convey the source, quality and/or type of a product to a purchaser. Likewise, the packaging for the product itself may have information related to the product, such as a description of the product or intended uses of the product. Often times, the amount of information that can be conveyed to a purchaser are limited by the type of product. For example, it is problematic to convey information about products that are sold to the purchaser in one form that transition to a different form after use and/or application by the purchaser. With such products, it may be difficult to convey adequate information about the final form of such products through the use of conventional product packaging techniques.
Therefore, what is needed is a packaging for a product that provides information regarding the product in its final form to allow a potential purchaser to receive such information regarding the final form of the product and/or evaluate the final form of the product.
The present invention contemplates the provision of a novel product packaging having an external sample of the product contained within the packaging.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a product packaging that provides a representation of the product contained within the packaging in the product's final and/or applied form.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a product sample swatch that is configured to affixation to a product container containing the product represented by the sample swatch in its non-final form.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a method of affixing a product sample swatch to a product container containing the product represented by the sample swatch in its non-final form.
According to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention a product packaging is provided that may include a container configured to hold a first form of a product in an internal space thereof, and a swatch comprising the product in a second form applied to an external surface of the container.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the second form of the product may be a representation of a final form of the product when the product is used for an intended use of the product.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the final form of the product may be a dried, hardened or cured state of the product.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the first form of the product may be a liquid or uncured state of the product.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the swatch of the product may have a predetermined size and shape.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the swatch of the product may provide at least one indicia regarding the color, texture or hardness of the final form of the product.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the product may be for application to roofs and/or driveways.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the product may be an acrylic, silicone and/or asphalt based product.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the swatch may include an adhesive layer positioned between the product and the container, and a primer layer positioned between the adhesive layer and the product.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the primer layer may include an acrylic polymer.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the first form of product positioned within the internal space of the container may be a liquid state, and the second form of the product on the swatch may be a dried state.
According to another exemplary embodiment of the present invention, a method is provided for producing a product packaging having at least one indicia of a product configured for containment within the product packaging that may include applying the product in a first form to a substrate adhesive, drying, hardening or curing the product into a second form, creating a swatch of a predetermined size and shape of the second form of the product and substrate adhesive, and applying the swatch to an external surface of the product packaging.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the method may also include applying a primer to the substrate adhesive, and allowing the primer to dry before applying the product in the first form to the substrate adhesive.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the primer may be applied between the substrate adhesive and the product in the first form.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the primer may be configured to increase the adhesion of the product in the first form and in the second form to the substrate adhesive.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the method may also include inserting the product in the first form into an internal space of the product packaging.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the product may be for application to roofs and/or driveways.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the product may be an acrylic, silicone and/or asphalt based product.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the second form of the product may be a dried, hardened or cured state of the product.
According to this or other exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the first form of the product may be a liquid or uncured state of the product.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and object of the present invention, reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
The present invention now will be described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying figures, in which exemplary embodiments of the invention are shown. The invention may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein. Like reference numerals refer to like elements throughout.

The method of manufacturing the product packaging 10 according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention will now be discussed. An adhesive tape that may or may not include a release liner is coated on its non-adhesive side with a primer, for example an acrylic polymer. Once the primer is sufficiently dry, for example after a period of 24 hours, the product 20 is applied to the adhesive tape on the dried primer. The product 20 may be applied to the adhesive tape in the desired thickness according to the particular application for the product 20. The adhesive tape with the product 20 applied is allowed to dry, harden and/or cure in a controlled environment, which is preferably free of dust and debris. Once the product 20 has dried, hardened and/or cured, a custom tooled punch may be used to cut the adhesive tape with the product 20 applied to the desired size and shape for the swatch 25. In this manner, the swatch 25 may be provided with the layer discussed above with respect to
It will thus be seen that the objects set forth above, among those made apparent from the preceding description, are efficiently attained and, since certain changes may be made in the above article without departing from the scope of this invention, it is intended that all matter contained in this disclosure or shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be interpreted, as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is to be understood that all of the present figures, and the accompanying narrative discussions of corresponding embodiments, do not purport to be completely rigorous treatments of the invention under consideration. It is to be understood that the above-described arrangements are only illustrative of the application of the principles of the present invention. Numerous modifications and alternative arrangements may be devised by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Appl. No. 62/347,699 filed Jun. 9, 2016, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety.
