Claims
- 1. Thermally and hydrolytically stable polyenaminonitrile polymer having a backbone comprising recurring enaminonitrile units which include a carbon-carbon double bond moiety in which a nitrogen atom bearing a hydrogen atom is directly attached to one carbon atom of the carbon-carbon double bond moiety and at least one nitrile group is directly attached to the other carbon atom of the carbon-carbon double bond moiety.
- 2. Polyenaminonitrile polymer of claim 1 in which only one carbon atom of the carbon-carbon double bond moiety is contained within the polymer backbone.
- 3. Thermally stable polyenaminonitrile having a backbone comprising recurring units containing the enaminonitrile group --C[.dbd.C(X) (CN)]--NH-- in which X is hydrogen or any electron-withdrawing group.
- 4. Polyenaminonitrile of claim 3 having a dielectric constant of at least about 5.
- 5. Thermally stable polyenaminonitrile of claim 1 having a backbone comprising recurring units of the formula ##STR22## wherein X is hydrogen or any electron-withdrawing group,
- A is a mononuclear or polynuclear unsaturated ring system,
- B is a mononuclear or polynuclear unsaturated ring system, an aliphatic group, a cycloaliphatic group, or an aliphatic-cycloaliphatic group, and
- a is 0 or 1.
- 6. Polyenaminonitrile of claim 5 wherein B is a mononuclear or polynuclear unsaturated ring system.
- 7. Polyenaminonitrile of claim 6 wherein each enaminonitrile group linked to B is linked via its enamino group to a nuclear atom of a corresponding unsaturated 6-membered ring structure comprised by B and having a hydrogen atom at an ortho position to said nuclear atom.
- 8. Thermally stable polyenaminonitrile of claim 1 having the formula ##STR23## wherein Y is any leaving group,
- X is hydrogen or any electron-withdrawing group,
- A is a mononuclear or polynuclear unsaturated ring system,
- B is a mononuclear or polynuclear unsaturated ring system, an aliphatic group, a cycloaliphatic group, or an aliphatic-cycloaliphatic group,
- a is 0 or 1, and
- n is at least 2.
- 9. Polyenaminonitrile of claim 8 wherein B is a mononuclear or polynuclear unsaturated ring system.
- 10. Polyenaminonitrile of claim 9 wherein each enaminonitrile group linked to B is linked via its enamino group to a nuclear atom of a corresponding unsaturated 6-membered ring structure comprised by B and having a hydrogen atom at an ortho position to said nuclear atom.
- 11. Polyenaminonitrile of claim 10 wherein
- Y is halogen, cyano, alkoxy, cycloalkoxy, or aryloxy,
- X is hydrogen, cyano, alkanoyl, alkoxy carbonyl, or alkoxy sulfonyl,
- A and B are each individually ##STR24## where Z is any bifunctional linking group,
- R' is alkyl, halogen, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylsulfonyl, cyano, nitro, or phenyl, and
- m is a number from 0 to that number required to replace all the available hydrogen atoms with the corresponding R' substituent, and
- wherein n is about 2 to 40,000.
