Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of a salt of 3,3-dimethyl-2-oxo-butyric acid which comprises contacting a solution containing a salt of 3,3-dimethyl-2-hydroxy-butyric acid in at least about 95% purity at a pH of about 9 to 12 with approximately the stoichiometric amount of a permanganate, and separating the readily filterable coarsely crystalline MnO.sub.2 which is formed from the substantially pure dissolved salt of 3,3-dimethyl-2-oxo-butyric acid.
- 2. The process according to claim 1, wherein the permanganate is potassium permanganate, and the temperature is about 50.degree. to 60.degree. C.
- 3. The process according to claim 2, wherein the reaction is effected under vacuum so that the solution boils, part of the water boiling off to dissipate the exothermic reaction heat and maintain the reaction temperature.
- 4. The process of claim 1, wherein the solution containing a salt of 3,3-dimethyl-2-hydroxy-butyric acid is obtained by adding to an aqueous solution of an alkali maintained at a temperature of at least about 50.degree. C. molten dichloropinacolone in less than one-third the molar amount of the alkali.
