Claims
- 1. A method comprising subjecting a carrageenan-containing seaweed material having a solids content of less than 25% by weight to a shear stress treatment to provide a carrageenan-containing product.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the seaweed material is an aqueous mixture having a solids content of about 5% to about 20% by weight and the carrageenan-containing product exhibits an onset of hydration of less than about 50 *C as measured with a Brabender viscometer as a 2% by weight solids aqueous solution.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the seaweed material is an aqueous mixture having a solids content of about 5% to about 20% by weight and the carrageenan-containing product exhibits an onset of hydration of less than about 30 *C as measured with a Brabender viscometer as a 2% by weight solids aqueous solution.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the carrageenan-containing seaweed material is treated with a base prior to the shear stress treatment.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the carrageenan-containing seaweed material is prepared by a process comprising the steps of:
washing seaweed with water to form washed seaweed; treating the washed seaweed with a base to form base-treated seaweed; rinsing the base-treated seaweed with water to form rinsed seaweed; and washing the rinsed seaweed with an aqueous solution.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the washed seaweed is treated with base at a temperature of about 25*C to about 95*C.
- 7. The method according to claim 1 wherein the carrageenan seaweed-containing material is co-processed with at least one compound from the group consisting of a cellulosic, a chemically modified cellulose, a seaweed extract, a natural gum, a biosynthetic gum, a protein, a synthetic hydrocolloid, starches, modified starches, dextrins, dextrose, sugars, surfactants, emulsifiers, and salts.
- 8. The method according to claim 1 wherein the carrageenan seaweed-containing material is admixed with at least one compound from the group consisting of a cellulosic, a chemically modified cellulose, a seaweed extract, a natural gum, a biosynthetic gum, a protein, a synthetic hydrocolloid, starches, modified starches, dextrins, dextrose, sugars, surfactants, emulsifiers, and salts.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the carrageenan-containing seaweed material comprises base-treated seaweed and an aqueous solution.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein the seaweed is Eucheuma spinosum, Eucheuma cottonii, or a mixture thereof.
- 11. The method of claim 2 wherein the seaweed material is derived from Eucheuma cottonii.
- 12. The method of claim 3 wherein the seaweed material is derived from Eucheuma spinosum.
- 13. The method of claim 9 wherein the aqueous solution comprises water and a salt.
- 14. The method of claim 13 wherein the salt is potassium chloride, sodium chloride, or a mixture thereof.
- 15. The method of claim 1 wherein the carrageenan-containing seaweed material has a solids content of about 10% to about 20% by weight.
- 16. The method of claim 1 wherein the carrageenan-containing seaweed material has a solids content of about 13% to about 17% by weight.
- 17. The method of claim 1 wherein the carrageenan-containing product comprises semi-refined carrageenan.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein the semi-refined carrageenan has an onset of hydration below about 50*C as measured with a Brabender viscometer as a 2% by weight solids aqueous solution.
- 19. The method of claim 17 wherein the semi-refined carrageenan has an onset of hydration below about 30*C as measured with a Brabender viscometer as a 2% by weight solids aqueous solution.
- 20. The method of claim 17 wherein the carrageenan-containing seaweed material and the semi-refined carrageenan have colors which differ by less than about 4.0 L* units as measured using a Macbeth ColorEye 3000 colorimeter and dry powders having a particle size characterized in that at least 99% of the powder passes through a 100 mesh screen.
- 21. The method of claim 17 wherein the semi-refined carrageenan comprises at least about 65% by weight of carrageenan and at least about 2% by weight of acid insoluble material.
- 22. The method of claim 1 wherein the shear stress treatment comprises extruding the carrageenan-containing seaweed material.
- 23. The method of claim 22 wherein the extruding is performed using a twin-screw extruder.
- 24. The method of claim 23 wherein the extruder operates at at least 500 rpm and at least 90° C.
- 25. The method of claim 22 wherein the extruding is performed using a single-screw extruder feeding a twin-screw extruder.
- 26. The method of claim 22 wherein the extruding the carrageenan-containing seaweed material comprises a rapid discharge of steam and pressurized material through an extruder die.
- 27. The method of claim 26 wherein the carrageenan-containing seaweed material is granular after its discharge from the extruder die.
- 28. The method of claim 27 wherein the granules have an increased surface area relative to granules of carrageenan-containing seaweed material not rapidly discharged through the extruder die.
- 29. The method of claim 1 further comprising drying the carrageenan-containing product.
- 30. The method of claim 29 further comprising grinding the dried carrageenan-containing product.
- 31. The product of the process of claim 1.
- 32. The product of the process of claim 29.
- 33. The product of the process of claim 30.
- 34. The product of claim 33 having an onset of hydration below about 50*C as measured with a Brabender viscometer as a 2% by weight solids aqueous solution.
- 35. The product of claim 33 having a color of greater than about 74 L* units as measured using a Macbeth ColorEye 3000 colorimeter and a dry powder having a particle size characterized in that at least 99% of the powder passes through a 100 mesh screen.
- 36. The product of claim 33 comprising about 1% to about 20% by weight of a salt.
- 37. A toothpaste formulation comprising a binder, a humectant, an abrasive, and water, wherein the binder comprises a product according to claim 32.
- 38. The toothpaste formulation of claim 37 wherein the binder comprises less than about 1.5% by weight of the toothpaste formulation.
- 39. A semi-refined carrageenan product comprising at least about 65% by weight of carrageenan and at least about 2% by weight of acid insoluble material, the carrageenan product having an onset of hydration below about 50*C as measured with a Brabender viscometer as a 2% by weight solids aqueous solution.
- 40. The semi-refined carrageenan product of claim 39 having an onset of hydration below about 30*C as measured with a Brabender viscometer as a 2% by weight solids aqueous solution.
- 41. The semi-refined carrageenan product of claim 39 derived from Eucheuma cottonii.
- 42. The semi-refined carrageenan product of claim 40 derived from Eucheuma spinosum.
- 43. The semi-refined carrageenan product of claim 39 further comprising about 1% to about 20% by weight of a salt.
- 44. The method according to claim 7 wherein the carrageenan-containing seaweed material is co-processed with an additive, wherein the additive is added before the shear stress treatment.
- 45. The method according to claim 7 wherein the carrageenan-containing seaweed material is co-processed with an additive, wherein the additive is added during the shear stress treatment.
- 46. The method according to claim 7 wherein the carrageenan-containing seaweed material is co-processed with an additive, wherein the additive is added after the shear stress treatment.
- 47. The method according to claim 8 wherein the carrageenan-containing seaweed material is admixed with an additive, wherein the additive is added before the shear stress treatment.
- 48. The method according to claim 8 wherein the carrageenan-containing seaweed material is admixed with an additive, wherein the additive is added during the shear stress treatment.
- 49. The method according to claim 8 wherein the carrageenan-containing seaweed material is admixed with an additive, wherein the additive is added after the shear stress treatment.
- 50. The semi-refined carrageenan product of claim 47.
