Claims
- 1. The method of generating chlorine by electrolyzing an aqueous alkali metal chloride between gas and liquid permeable anode and cathode electrodes separated by a cation exchange membrane which is substantially impermeable to electrolyte flow which comprises conducting the electrolysis with said cathode and anode each being in contact with an electron current distributor having a higher overvoltage than the respective said cathode and anode electrodes, at least one of said gas and liquid permeable electrodes bonded to the membrane by means of a fluorocarbon binder and wherein the bonded gas and liquid permeable electrode has a thickness lower than the thickness of the membrane.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the said bonded gas and liquid permeable electrode has a thickness not exceeding 3 mils.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said bonded gas and liquid permeable electrode is the cathode and comprises ruthenium oxide.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said bonded gas and liquid permeable electrode is the cathode and comprises silver.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein said bonded gas and liquid permeable electrode is the anode.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein both said anode and said cathode are bonded to said membrane.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein a nickel screen current collector is in contact with said cathode.
