Claims
- 1. An apparatus for producing from a first alcoholic beverage a second beverage of reduced alcoholic content comprising:
- a membrane which is impermeable to a congener and permeable to alcohol;
- means for enabling alcohol which diffuses from a first alcoholic beverage through said membrane into a gas-phase extraction fluid comprising water vapor and alcohol on the second side of said membrane to produce a second alcoholic beverage on the second side of said membrane having reduced alcohol content, said means including,
- means for feeding a first alcoholic beverage across a first side of said membrane;
- means for providing a gas-phase extraction fluid to a second side of said membrane; and
- means for regulating the relative humidity of said gas-phase extraction fluid on said second side of said membrane.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the membrane is made of one selected from the group consisting of aliphatic polyamide, aliphatic polyurea, polyetheraminotriazine, aromatic polyamide, aromatic polyurea, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, cellulose triacetate, crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylonitrile, polyacrylonitrile-copolymer, polybenzimidazole, polybenzimidazolone, hydrophilic crosslinked vinyl polymers or copolymers, and ion-exchange membranes with various counterions.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the membrane is permselective against at least a component of the first alcoholic beverage.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the means for feeding an alcoholic beverage across the first side of said membrane is a pump.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising means for preparing the gas-phase extraction fluid.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 in which the means for preparing the gas-phase extraction fluid is a gas-liquid contactor.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5 in which the means for preparing the gas-phase extraction fluid is a condenser.
- 8. The apparatus of claims 5, 6, or 7 in which the gas-phase extraction fluid comprises a non-condensable gas and water vapor.
- 9. The apparatus of claims 5, 6, or 7 in which the gas-phase extraction fluid comprises a non-condensable gas, water vapor, and an organic component.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a means for applying a vacuum to the gas-phase extraction fluid.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the means for providing a vacuum is a vacuum pump.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the means for regulating the humidity of the gas-phase extraction fluid is a process heater.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the means for regulating the temperature and relative humidity of the gas-phase extraction fluid is a process heater and relative humidity controller.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a means for recovering the gas-phase extraction fluid comprising water vapor and alcohol in liquid form.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 in which the means for recovering the gas-phase extraction fluid is a condenser.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 14 in which the means for recovering the gas-phase extraction fluid is a gas-liquid contactor.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the membrane is in a hollow fiber form, in which the first beverage is fed through the lumen of the membrane and gas-phase extraction fluid is fed to the shell side of the membrane fiber.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the membrane is in a hollow fiber form, in which the first beverage is fed to the shell side of the membrane fiber and the gas-phase extraction fluid is fed through the lumen of the membrane.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising the means for varying the ratio of membrane area to the flow rate of the first beverage to control the degree of alcohol removal from the first beverage.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising the means for varying the temperature to control the rate of alcohol removal from the first beverage.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 20 in which the means for varying the temperature is a process heater.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising the means for varying the flow rate of the beverage stream across the membrane relative to the flow rate of the gas-phase extraction fluid to control the rate and degree of alcohol removal from the first beverage.
