Claims
- 1. A process for production of a phosphonopyrazole comprising contacting an alkaline salt of 3-hydroxy-2-(dialkyl phosphono)acrylate and a compound selected from the group consisting of a protonated hydrazine, a protonated alkyl hydrazine, and a protonated aryl hydrazine.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein the phosphonopyrazole is a dialkyl [1-aryl-(3 or 5)-hydroxy-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate or a dialkyl[1-alkyl-(3 or 5)-hydroxy-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate.
- 3. The process of claim 1, further comprising adding a base followed by acidification.
- 4. The process of claim 1, wherein the contacting occurs in a medium selected from the group consisting of an aqueous solvent, an organic solvent, and a combination thereof.
- 5. The process of claim 4, wherein the medium is an aqueous solvent.
- 6. The process of claim 5, wherein the alkaline salt of 3-hydroxy-2-(dialkyl phosphono)acrylate and the selected hydrazine are reacted in an aqueous solvent.
- 7. The process of claim 4, wherein the organic solvent is selected from the group consisting of tetrahydrofuran, dimethylformamide, dimethylsulfoxide, acetonitrile, and an alcohol.
- 8. The process of claim 5, further comprising washing an aqueous phase with an organic solvent to remove impurities before acidification.
- 9. The process of claim 1, wherein the phosphonopyrazole is a dialkyl [1-aryl or alkyl-(3 or 5)-hydroxy- 1H-pyrazole-4-yl]phosphonate.
- 10. The process of claim 9, wherein the phosphonopyrazole is a compound of formula I or II:
- 11. A compound of formula I or II:
- 12. The compound of claim 11, wherein R2 is an agronomically acceptable salt.
- 13. The compound of claim 12, wherein the agronomically acceptable salt is an alkali metal salt or an amine salt.
- 14. The compound of claim 11, selected from the group consisting of dimethyl [1-cyclohexyl-5-hydroxy-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate, dimethyl [1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-hydroxy-3-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate, dimethyl [1-(3,5-dimethylphenyl)-5-hydroxy-3-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate, dimethyl{1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-[(4-chlorobenzyl)oxy]-1H-pyrazol-4-yl}phosphonate, dimethyl{1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-[(2-nitrobenzyl)oxy]-1H-pyrazol-4-yl}phosphonate, 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-[2-nitrobenzyl)oxy]-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonic acid, dimethyl [2-(4-chlorophenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1-ethyl-3-oxo-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate, dimethyl [2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-cyclohexyl-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate, dimethyl [2-(3,5-dimethylphenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1-ethyl-3-oxo-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate, and dimethyl [1-butyl-2-(3,5-dimethylphenyl)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate.
- 15. The compound of claim 14, selected from the group consisting of dimethyl{1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-[(4-chlorobenzyl)oxy]-1H-pyrazol-4-yl}phosphonate, dimethyl{1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-[(2-nitrobenzyl)oxy]-1H-pyrazol-4-yl}phosphonate, 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-[2-nitrobenzyl)oxy]-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonic acid, dimethyl [2-(4-chlorophenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1-ethyl-3-oxo-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate.
- 16. The compound of claim 14, selected from the group consisting of dimethyl{1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-[(4-chlorobenzyl)oxy]-1H-pyrazol-4-yl}phosphonate, and dimethyl{1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-[(2-nitrobenzyl)oxy]-1H-pyrazol-4-yl}phosphonate.
- 17. A composition for inducing male sterility in a plant comprising a gametocidally effective amount of one or more compounds of formula I or II
- 18. The composition of claim 17, wherein if R3 is hydrogen and R1 is aryl, then R2 is not hydrogen or C1-C4 alkyl.
- 19. The composition of claim 19, wherein the compound is selected from the group consisting of dimethyl [1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-hydroxy-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate, dimethyl [1-(4-fluorophenyl)-5-hydroxy-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate, dimethyl [1-(2-chlorophenyl)-5-hydroxy-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate, dimethyl [1-(4-bromophenyl)-5-hydroxy-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate, methyl potassium[2-(3,5-dimethylphenyl)-3-hydroxy-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate, dimethyl{1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-[(4-chlorobenzyl)oxy]-1H-pyrazol-4-yl}phosphonate, dimethyl{1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-[(2-nitrobenzyl)oxy]-1H-pyrazol-4-yl}phosphonate, 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-[2-nitrobenzyl)oxy]-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonic acid, and dimethyl [2-(4-chlorophenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1-ethyl-3-oxo-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate,

The composition of claim 20, wherein the compound is selected from the group consisting of dimethyl [1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-hydroxy-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate, dimethyl [1-(4-fluorophenyl)-5-hydroxy-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]phosphonate, dimethyl{1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5- [(4-chlorobenzyl)oxy]-1H-pyrazol-4-yl}phosphonate, and dimethyl{1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-[(2-nitrobenzyl)oxy]-1H-pyrazol-4-yl}phosphonate.
- 22. A method of inducing male sterility in a plant comprising treating the plant or a seed thereof with a composition comprising a gametocidally effective amount of one or more compounds of formula I or II
- 23. The method of claim 22, wherein the plant is a monocot.
- 24. The method of claim 23, wherein the plant is a graminaceous monocot.
- 25. The method of claim 24, wherein the plant is a wheat plant.
- 26. A method for producing a hybrid seed, the method comprising:
a) treating a female parent of a plant prior to meiosis with a composition of claim 17; b) pollinating the female parent with pollen from an untreated male parent that is of a different line from the female parent; and c) allowing the female parent to produce the hybrid seed.
- 27. The method of claim 26, wherein the female parent plant is treated by applying from about {fraction (1/32)} pound to about 10 pounds of the composition per acre (0.035 to 11.2 Kg/ha).
- 28. The method of claim 26, wherein the female parent plant is treated by applying the composition to foliage of the female parent plant.
- 29. Hybrid seed produced by the method of claim 26.
- 30. A plant that has been rendered substantially male-sterile by treatment with a composition of claim 17.
- 31. A seed treated with a composition of claim 17.
- 32. A method for producing a hybrid seed, the method comprising:
a) treating a seed of a plant with a composition of claim 17; b) growing the seed to produce a substantially male-sterile female parent plant; c) pollinating the female parent with pollen from an untreated male parent that is of a different line from the female parent; and d) allowing the female parent to produce the hybrid seed.
- 33. Hybrid seed produced by the method of claim 32.
