Claims
- 1. A predetermined number of progressive forging machines each providing a different number of work stations at which workpieces are progressively forged, all of said machines being operable to forge workpieces cut from stock having the same size, said machines each comprising a bed frame, a slide reciprocable on said bed frame, and a die breast mounted on said bed frame, said slide and die breast being operable to support tooling at each work station for progressively forming said workpieces, said bed frame of each machine including a first and second side frame members and a spacer, said spacer of each machine being mounted between said first and second side frame members of each machine and cooperating therewith to provide said bed frame of each machine, all of said first side frame members of said machines being substantially identical, all of said second side frame members of said machines being substantially identical, said spacers of each machine having a different width corresponding to the number of work stations provided by each machine, said machines being manufactured by:
- (a) producing said predetermined number of said substantially identical first side frame members;
- (b) producing said predetermined number of substantially identical second side frame members;
- (c) producing said predetermined number of spacers with one spacer sized for use in each of said machines and having a width different from the other of said spacers; and
- (d) assembling a first and a second side frame member on each side of each spacer to provide a frame for each machine,
- the spacer of each of the machines being originally constructed and arranged to be interchangeable with any of the other spacers for assembly with the first and second side frame members associated with such any other spacer.
- 2. A predetermined number of progressive forging machines as set forth in claim 1, wherein all of said machines include knockout assemblies and kickout asemblies which have components that are identical.
- 3. A predetermined number of progressive forging machines as set forth in claim 1, wherein all of said machines include substantially identical drives mounted on one of said side frame members independent of the other of said side frame members.
- 4. A progressive forging machine providing a predetermined number of work stations at which workpieces are progressively forged, said machine including a bed frame formed by assembling separate side frame members on opposite sides of a spacer, said machine being manufactured by producing two side frame members and a plurality of spacers adapted to be mounted between said side frame members to cooperate therewith to from a bed frame for said machine, side spacers being produced with different widths selected to permit assembly of machines having different numbers of work stations, said bed frame being assembled from a selected one of said spacers having a width necessary to accommodate the number of work stations in said machine and one of said side frame members secured to each side of said spacer, each of the spacers being originally constructed and arranged to be interchangeably assembled, without another spacer, with said side frame members to which said one selected spacer is assembled in a manner substantially the same as said one selected spacer is assembled to such side frame members.
