Claims
- 1. A mold for making a progressive plastic eyeglass lens with a front face, a back face, a near vision correction zone, a far vision correction zone, and a vision transition zone between the near vision correction zone and the far vision correction zone, comprising:
- a back face configured to cast the front face of the lens, and comprising (1) a centrally located concave surface having a near vision correction zone adapted to cast the near vision correction zone of the lens, a far vision correction zone adapted to cast the far vision correction zone of the lens, and a vision transition zone adapted to cast the vision transition zone of the lens; and (2) an annular surface which tapers at an angle from the edges of the back face to the edges of the concave surface in the back face;
- a front face; and
- side surfaces connecting the front face to the back face.
- 2. The mold of claim 1 wherein the width of the annular surface is between about 0.5 and 10 millimeters when measured from the edges of the back face to the edges of the concave surface.
- 3. The mold of claim 1 wherein the width of the annular surface is between about 2.0 and 8.0 millimeters when measured from the edges of the back face to the edges of the concave surface.
- 4. The mold of claim 1 wherein the angle is from about 0.25 to 10 degrees.
- 5. The mold of claim 1 wherein the angle is from about 0.25 to 5 degrees.
- 6. The mold of claim 1 wherein the mold comprises glass.
- 7. The mold of claim 1 wherein the mold is substantially disk-shaped.
- 8. The mold of claim 1 wherein a width of the annular surface varies, the width being measured from the edges of the back face to the edges of the concave surface.
- 9. The mold of claim 1 wherein a width of the angular surface proximate the near vision correction zone of the mold is substantially greater than a width of the band proximate the far vision correction zone of the mold.
- 10. The mold of claim 1 wherein the annular surface proximate the near vision correction zone tapers inward towards a center portion of the mold.
- 11. The mold of claim 1 wherein the annular surface proximate the far vision correction zone tapers inward away from a center portion of the mold.
- 12. The mold of claim 1 wherein a center area of the mold is substantially thicker than the rest of the mold.
- 13. The mold of claim 1 wherein a center area of the mold is substantially thinner than the rest of the mold.
- 14. The mold of claim 1 wherein the mold transmits light having a wavelength substantially greater than about 300 nm.
- 15. The mold of claim 1 wherein the mold is substantially oval shaped.
- 16. The mold of claim 1 wherein the side surfaces are substantially flat.
- 17. The mold of claim 1 wherein the side surfaces are substantially concave.
- 18. The mold of claim 1 wherein the side surfaces are substantially convex.
- 19. The mold of claim 1 wherein the back surface is configured to form a front face of the eyeglass lens such that the front face of the eyeglass lens is substantially convex.
- 20. An improved progressive mold which, in combination with a companion mold, is configured to cast a progressive optical lens, the progressive optical lens comprising a convex front face including an upper far vision zone, a lower near vision zone and a transition zone between the far and near vision zones; said mold comprising:
- a concave back surface configured to form the convex front face of the lens, wherein the concave surface comprises a near vision correction zone adapted to cast the near vision correction zone of the lens, a far vision correction zone adapted to cast the far vision correction zone of the lens, and a vision transition zone adapted to cast the vision transition zone of the lens;
- an annular surface surrounding the concave back surface configured to seat opposite a peripheral surface of a companion mold or a gasket, wherein the annular surface proximate the near vision correction zone is tapered inwards towards a center portion of the mold, and wherein the annular surface proximate the far vision correction zone tapered inward away from the center portion of the mold;
- a front face; and
- side surfaces connecting the front face to the back face.
- 21. The mold of claim 20, wherein the annular surface is tapered at an angle of between about 0.25 and about 10 degrees.
- 22. The mold of claim 20, wherein the annular surface is tapered at an angle of between about 0.25 and about 5 degrees.
- 23. The mold of claim 20 wherein a width of the annular surface is about 0.5 to about 10 millimeters.
- 24. The mold of claim 20 wherein a width of the annular surface is about 2 to about 8 millimeters.
- 25. The mold of claim 20 wherein the mold comprises glass.
- 26. The mold of claim 20 wherein a center area of the mold is substantially thicker than the rest of the mold.
- 27. The mold of claim 20 wherein a center area of the mold is substantially thinner than the rest of the mold.
- 28. The mold of claim 20 wherein the mold transmits light having a wavelength substantially greater than about 300 nm.
- 29. The mold of claim 20 wherein the mold is substantially oval shaped.
- 30. The mold of claim 20 wherein the side surfaces are substantially flat.
- 31. The mold of claim 20 wherein the side surfaces are substantially concave.
- 32. The mold of claim 20 wherein the side surfaces are substantially convex.
- 33. A mold for making a progressive plastic eyeglass lens, comprising:
- a back face adapted to cast a front face of the eyeglass lens, wherein the back face of the mold comprises:
- a near vision correction zone adapted to cast a near vision correction zone of the eyeglass lens;
- a far vision correction zone adapted to cast a far vision correction zone of the eyeglass lens; and
- a transition vision correction zone adapted to cast the transition vision correction zone of the eyeglass lens, wherein the transition vision correction zone is positioned between the near vision correction zone and the far vision correction zone;
- a front face;
- side surfaces connecting the front face to the back face; and
- a substantially flat band along a peripheral edge of the back face of the mold, wherein a width of the band proximate the near vision correction zone is substantially greater than a width of the band proximate the far vision correction zone, and wherein a width of the band between the portion of the band proximate the near vision correction zone and the portion of the band proximate the far vision correction zone is substantially narrower than a width of the band proximate the far vision correction zone; and
- wherein vertical prism effects in the eyeglass lens cast by the mold are substantially reduced.
- 34. The mold of claim 33 wherein a width of the band varies, the width being measured from the edges of the back face to the edges of the concave surface.
- 35. The mold of claim 33 wherein a width of the band ranges from about 0.5 to about 10 millimeters.
- 36. The mold of claim 33 wherein a width of the band ranges from about 2 to about 8 millimeters.
- 37. The mold of claim 33 wherein the band proximate the near vision correction zone tapers inward towards a center portion of the mold.
- 38. The mold of claim 33 wherein the band proximate the far vision correction zone tapers inward away from a center portion of the mold.
- 39. The mold of claim 33 wherein a center area of the mold is substantially thicker than the rest of the mold.
- 40. The mold of claim 33 wherein a center area of the mold is substantially thinner than the rest of the mold.
- 41. The mold of claim 33 wherein the mold transmits light having a wavelength substantially greater than about 300 nm.
- 42. The mold of claim 33 wherein the mold is substantially oval shaped.
- 43. The mold of claim 33 wherein the side surfaces are substantially flat.
- 44. The mold of claim 33 wherein the side surfaces are substantially concave.

- 49. The mold of claim 33 wherein the back surface is substantially concave, and wherein the back surface is configured to form a front face of the eyeglass lens such that the front face of the eyeglass lens is substantially convex.
- 50. A mold for making a progressive plastic eyeglass lens, comprising:
- a back face adapted to cast a front face of the eyeglass lens, wherein the back face of the mold comprises:
- a near vision correction zone adapted to cast a near vision correction zone of the eyeglass lens;
- a far vision correction zone adapted to cast a far vision correction zone of the eyeglass lens; and
- a transition vision correction zone adapted to cast the transition vision correction zone of the eyeglass lens, wherein the transition vision correction zone is
- positioned between the near vision correction zone and the far vision correction zone;
- a front face;
- side surfaces connecting the front face to the back face; and
- wherein peripheral edges of the back face proximate to the near vision correction zone of the mold are tapered such that vertical prism effects in the eyeglass lens cast by the mold are substantially reduced.
- 51. The mold of claim 50 wherein the mold comprises glass.
- 52. The mold of claim 50 wherein a center area of the mold is substantially thicker than the rest of the mold.
- 53. The mold of claim 50 wherein a center area of the mold is substantially thinner than the rest of the mold.
- 54. The mold of claim 50 wherein the mold transmits light having a wavelength substantially greater than about 300 nm.
- 55. The mold of claim 50 wherein the mold is substantially oval shaped.
- 56. The mold of claim 50 wherein the side surfaces are substantially flat.
- 57. The mold of claim 50 wherein the side surfaces are substantially concave.
- 58. The mold of claim 50 wherein the side surfaces are substantially convex.
- 59. The mold of claim 50 wherein the mold comprises a substantially concave surface, and wherein the peripheral edges of the back face comprise a substantially flat band which connects the peripheral edges of the back face to edges of the concave surface.
- 60. The mold of claim 50 wherein the back surface is substantially concave.
- 61. The mold of claim 50 wherein the back surface is substantially concave, and wherein the back surface is configured to form a front face of the eyeglass lens such that the front face of the eyeglass lens is substantially convex.
- 62. The mold of claim 50 wherein the mold comprises a substantially concave surface, and wherein the peripheral edges of the back face comprise a substantially flat band which connects the peripheral edges of the back face to edges of the concave surface, and wherein a width of the band varies, the width being measured from the edges of the back face to the edges of the concave surface.
- 63. A mold for making a progressive plastic eyeglass lens, comprising a front face, a back face and side surface connecting the front face to the back face, the back face being configured to cast a front face of the eyeglass lens, wherein the back face of the mold comprises a centrally located concave surface having a near vision correction zone adapted to cast a near vision correction zone of the eyeglass lens, a far vision correction zone adapted to cast a far vision correction zone of the eyeglass lens, and a transition vision correction zone adapted to cast the transition vision correction zone of the eyeglass lens, wherein the transition vision correction zone is positioned between the near vision correction zone and the far vision correction zone, produced by the method comprising:
- forming the mold; and
- tapering peripheral edges of the back face of the mold such that an annular band which tapers at an angle from the edges of the back face to the edges of the concave surface of the back face is formed.
- 64. The mold of claim 63 wherein tapering the mold comprises:
- removing a portion of the mold from the peripheral edges of the back face proximate to the mold near vision correction zone; and
- removing a portion of the mold from the peripheral edges of the back face proximate to the mold far vision correction zone.
- 65. The mold of claim 63 wherein the portion of the mold removed from the edges of the back face proximate to the mold near vision correction zone is substantially larger than the portion of the mold removed from the edges of the back face proximate to the mold near vision correction zone.
- 66. The mold of claim 63 wherein tapering of the mold comprises grinding the mold.
- 67. The mold of claim 63 wherein tapering of the mold comprises cutting the mold.
- 68. The mold of claim 63 wherein a width of the band is about 0.5 to 10 millimeters.
- 69. The mold of claim 63 wherein a width of the annular band is about 2 to 8 millimeters.
- 70. The mold of claim 63 wherein the annular band is substantially angled in a direction from the peripheral edge of the back face toward a center portion of the mold.
- 71. The mold of claim 63 wherein the annular band is substantially angled in a direction from the peripheral edge of the back face toward a center portion of the mold, and wherein an angle of the band is about 0.25 to about 10 degrees.
- 72. The mold of claim 63 wherein the annular band is substantially angled in a direction from the peripheral edge of the back face toward a center portion of the mold, and wherein an angle of the band is about 0.25 to about 5 degrees.
- 73. The mold of claim 63 wherein forming the mold comprises heating glass such that the glass substantially conforms to a ceramic mold.
