Claims
- 1. A projection device comprising a light source, a plurality of reflective spatial light modulators, and a prism system arranged in the light path between the light source and the spatial light modulators, the prism system including at least one totally internally reflecting surface arranged to direct light from the light source onto a dichroic surface at substantially normal incidence to the dichroic surface, and to direct light reflected from the dichroic surface onto at least one of the spatial light modulators.
- 2. A projection device according to claim 1, wherein the reflective surface of the or each spatial light modulator is substantially perpendicular to the direction of incidence of light from the light source on the prism system.
- 3. A projection device according to claim 1 or claim 2 including a plurality of dichroic surfaces effective to split light of different wavelengths onto a plurality of spatial light modulators, and to pass unwanted light out of the projection system towards a beam dump.
- 4. A projection device according to claim 3 including two totally internally reflective surfaces, light from the light source being arranged to pass through the first totally internally reflective surface, to a first dichroic surface between the first and second totally internally reflective surfaces;
the first dichroic surface being arranged to reflect light within a first wavelength band to be reflected from the first totally internally reflecting surface onto a first reflective spatial light modulator, the rest of the light being transmitted through the second totally internally reflective surface to a second dichroic surface in the light path after the second totally internally reflective surface; the second dichroic surface being arranged to reflect light within a second wavelength band to be reflected from the second totally internally reflective surface onto a second reflective spatial light modulator and to transmit light within a third wavelength band onto a third reflective spatial light modulator; the second totally internally reflective surface being arranged to direct spatially modulated light in the return path from the second spatial light modulator onto the second dichroic surface for recombination with spatially modulated light in the return path from the third spatial light modulator; the first totally internally reflective surface being effective to direct spatially modulated light from the first spatial light modulator onto the first dichroic surface for recombination with spatially modulated light in the return path from the second and third spatial light modulators to produce a spatially modulated output beam.
- 5. A projection device according to claim 4, including a third totally internally reflective surface effective to direct light from the light source through the first totally internally reflective surface, and to direct the spatially modulated output beam towards a projection screen.
- 6. A projection device comprising at least one reflective spatial light modulator, a light source and a prism system for directing light from the light source onto the spatial light modulator, wherein the prism system includes at least one total internally reflective surface arranged such that spatially modulated light reflected from the spatial light modulator in a first direction is reflected by the total internally reflective surface towards the display, and light reflected from the spatial light modulator along a second direction is directed by the totally internally reflective surface towards a beam dump.
- 7. A projection device according to any one of the preceding claims, arranged such that spatially modulated light does not traverse any totally internally reflective surface.
- 8. A projection device according to any one of the preceding claims in which at least one of the or each totally internally reflective surfaces is formed between two prism members of different refractive indices.
- 9. A projection device according to any one of the preceding claims, in which at least one of the or each totally internally reflective surfaces comprises the surface between a solid material and a liquid.
- 10. A projection device according to claim 9 in which said liquid is silicone oil.
- 11. A projection device according to claim 9 in which the liquid is water.
- 12. A projection device according to any one of the preceding claims in which the reflective spatial light modulators are deformable mirror devices.
- 13. A projection device according to any one of the preceding claims including means for removing unwanted wavelengths within the incident light from the spatially modulated light.
- 14. A projection device according to claim 13 when dependent on claim 1, wherein said removal means comprises a further dichroic surface effective to selectively reflect said unwanted wavelengths.
- 15. A projection device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to FIGS. 4 to 9 of the accompanying figures.
- 16. A projection system including a projection device according to any one of the preceding claims and a display screen.
- 17. A prism assembly substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to any one of FIGS. 4 to 9 of the accompanying drawings.
- 18. A projection device comprising a light source, at least one deflectable mirror array effective to spatially modulate light from the light source and a prism system arranged in the light path between the light source and the deflectable mirror array, the prism system including at least one totally internally reflecting surface for light incident on the surface at greater than a critical angle, the surface being effective to transmit light incident on the surface at less than said critical angle, the surface being at a boundary between two members of different refractive indices within the prism system, the totally internally reflective surface being arranged to transmit light from the light source to the deflectable mirror array, and to reflect spatially modulated light from the deflectable mirror array such that no spatially modulated light traverses the boundary.
- 19. A projection device comprising a light source, at least one spatial light modulator effective to spatially modulate light from the light source and a prism system arranged in the light path between the light source and the spatial light modulator, the prism system including at least one totally internally reflecting surface for light incident on the surface at greater than a critical angle, the surface being effective to transmit light incident on the surface at less than said critical angle, the surface being at a boundary between two members of different refractive indices within the prism system, the totally internally reflective surface being arranged to transmit a single light beam from the light source to the spatial light modulator, and to reflect spatially modulated light from the spatial light modulator such that no spatially modulated light traverses the boundary.
- 20. A projection device according to claim 18 in which the at least one of the totally internally reflective surfaces is formed at a boundary between two prism members of different refractive indices.
- 21. A projection device according to claim 19 in which the at least one of the totally internally reflective surfaces is formed at a boundary between two prism members of different refractive indices.
- 22. A projection device according to claim 18 in which the at least one of the totally internally reflective surfaces comprises a boundary between a solid material and a fluid.
- 23. A projection device according to claim 19 in which the at least one of the totally internally reflective surfaces comprises a boundary between a solid material and a fluid.
- 24. A projection device according to claim 22 or 23 in which said fluid is silicone oil.
- 25. A projection device according to claim 22 or 23 in which the fluid is water.
- 26. A projection device according to claim 22 or 23 in which the fluid is air.
- 27. A projection device according to claim 19 in which the spatial light modulator is a liquid crystal device.
- 28. A projection device according to claim 19 in which the spatial light modulator is a deflectable mirror array.
- 29. A projection device according to claim 18 or 19 including means for removing unwanted wavelengths within the incident light from the spatially modulated beam.
- 30. A projection system including a projection device according to claim 18 or claim 19 and a display screen.
