Claims
- 1. An aerial projection system comprisinga housing; a video source mounted in a first portion of said housing for generating a three-dimensional image; said video source including a display panel having a plurality of individually controllable pixels with low transmissivity between pixels and a backlight for generating light to form an aerial image; controller means for controlling said video source to achieve a background color of zero red, zero green and zero blue when forming an image on a portion of said video display device; a beam splitter mounted in said housing in optical alignment with said video source, a spherical mirror mounted in a second portion of said housing in optical alignment with said beam splitter such that a portion of light from said video source is directed to said spherical mirror; and a polarizer, aligned parallel to said beam splitter, in said second portion of said housing so that said portion of light is transmitted out of said housing to form said aerial image.
- 2. The aerial projection system of claim 1 wherein said polarizer further comprises an antireflective coating on a surface of said polarizer facing away from said beam splitter.
- 3. The aerial projection system of claim 1 further comprising a transparent imaging device proximate to said second portion of said housing, said imaging device controllable for displaying video information, a portion of said image device adapted for passing said aerial image from said housing into a region of space beyond said imaging device.
- 4. The aerial projection system of claim 1 wherein said backlight comprises a full spectrum light source generating at least 3,600 Lumens.
- 5. The aerial projection system of claim 4 further comprising a second display panel positioned proximate to said video source, said second display panel separately controllable to form an image for aerial display in combination an image formed by said video source.
- 6. The aerial projection system of claim 1 further comprising a frame surrounding an edge portion of said display screen to minimize the visibility of said display screen to an observer of said aerial image.
- 7. The aerial projection system of claim 1 wherein said video source further includes:a prism for collecting off-axis light from said backlight and re-directing said off-axis light through said display panel; means for filtering high frequency components of the light; means for collimating light exiting said display panel; and a polarizer having a layer of anti-reflective coating on the surface oriented away from said display panel.
- 8. The aerial projection system of claim 1 wherein said backlight comprises a light source generating at least 3,600 Lumens.
- 9. The aerial projection system of claim 8 further comprising a light shield surrounding the edge of said display panel and a contrast ratio of at least 400:1.
- 10. The aerial projection system of claim 9 wherein said video source further comprises a high bright superblack LCD having a narrow field of view to reduce disbursement of off-axis light and to substantially focus light in the forward direction.
- 11. The aerial projection system of claim 10 wherein said the dimension of said LCD is proportional to the dimension of said spherical mirror.
- 12. The aerial projection system of claim 1 wherein said video source further includes:a display panel having a plurality of individually controllable pixels; a controller for maintaining selective ones of said plurality of pixels at a state corresponding to super-black; and a light source generating at least 3,600 Lumens.
- 13. The aerial projection system of claim 12 wherein said superblack state comprises at least the twenty darkest shades achievable by said display panel.
- 14. The aerial projection system of claim 12 wherein said superblack state comprises at (east the darkest two percent (2%) of dark shades achievable by said display panel.
- 15. The aerial projection system of claim 1 wherein said housing further includes:a lightweight tubular frame, said frame including a plurality of cross-members for mounting said beam splitter and mirror in optical alignment with said video source; a facade attached to said frame for shielding the interior of said housing from external ambient light sources.
- 16. The aerial projection system of claim 15 further comprising a transparent imaging device coupled to said frame such that said transparent imaging device in optical alignment with said beam splitter and mirror, said transparent imaging device controllable for displaying video information.
- 17. The aerial projection system of claim 1 further comprising a second display panel positioned proximate to said video source, said second display panel separately controllable to form an image for aerial display in combination an image formed by said video source.
- 18. A system for displaying aerial animated images at a video display rate comprising:A development environment for developing an animation sequence; At least one display system having a housing for positioning a video display device and optical elements for projecting animated images formed on said video display device outside of said housing as aerial animated images; said video display device having a dark panel liquid display panel associated with a controller for maintaining background pixels at a superblack state so as to minimize visible transmission of said video display device to an observer viewing said aerial animated images; and A communication network for transmitting said animation sequence from said development environment to said at least on system.
- 19. The system of claim 18 further comprising:a plurality of display systems; and a network sever, coupled to said communication network and to said plurality of display systems, for receiving animated image sequences from said development environment and for transmitting said animated image sequences to each of said plurality of display systems.
- 20. The system of claim 19 further comprising:A user interlace device for detecting the observer commands at one of said plurality of display systems; Means responsive to said observer commands for changing the animation sequence at said one of said plurality of display systems.
- 21. A method for projecting an aerial image comprising the steps of:Providing a video display device having a superblack background; Controlling said video display device to form an image on a portion of said video display device while maintaining a superblack background; Providing a backlight of sufficient intensity to generate an aerial image visible in ambient light; and Projecting said image through an optical path to form said aerial image.
- 22. The method of claim 21 further comprising the step of transferring said image from a server computer to said video display device prior to said controlling step.
- 23. The method of claim 21 further comprising the step of projecting a sequence of said images at video rate.
- 24. The method of claim 23 further comprising the steps of:Maintaining the background color surrounding said image as superblack; and Preventing the movement of said image beyond an edge of said display panel.
- 25. The method of claim 21 further comprising the step of combining said aerial image with a separately generated image such that said aerial image and said separately generated image are simultaneously observable.
- 26. The method of claim 21 further comprising the step of combining said image with a separately generated image such that said image and said separately generated image form a composite aerial image.
- 27. The method of claim 21 further comprising the steps of:providing a development environment for developing a sequence of animated images; and transferring said sequence of animated images from said development environment to said video display device prior to said controlling step.
- 28. The method of claim 27 wherein said projecting step further comprises the steps of:projecting said sequence of animated images through a transparent imaging panel; and independently generating a second image on said transparent imaging panel.
- 29. The method of claim 27 further comprising the step of:In said development environment, compensating said image for optical distortion associated with said projecting step.
- 30. The method of claim 27 further comprising the step of:In said development environment, selecting a color scheme to achieve the illusion of a realistic three-dimensional aerial image.
- 31. The method of claim 30 wherein said selecting step includes the step of selecting a color scheme from a palette comprising the colors of: red, yellow, blue-green and green.
- 32. The method of claim 31 wherein said palette further includes metallic shine and neon colors.
- 33. The method of claim 27 further comprising the step of developing said sequence of animated images in accordance with a set of display rules.
- 34. The method of claim 27 further comprising the step of adding background music said animation sequence in said development environment.
- 35. The method of claim 27 further comprising the step of including a transitional sequence to hide an image from view during the beginning or the end of said sequence of animated images to maintain an illusion of a three-dimensional image.
- 36. The method of claim 27 further comprising the step transposing a two-dimensional format to a spatial format.
- 37. A computer to implement the method of claim 27.
- 38. A computer-readable medium having instructions for assisting in the implementation of the method of claim 27.
- 39. A system to implement the method of claim 27.
- 40. The method of claim 21 further comprising the step of selecting an image color scheme to achieve high contrast relative to said superblack background.
- 41. A computer to implement the method of claim 21.
- 42. A computer-readable medium having instructions for assisting in the implementation of the method of claim 21.
- 43. A system to implement the method of claim 21.
- 44. An aerial projection system comprisinga housing; a beam splitter coupled to said housing; a spherical mirror coupled to said housing and optically aligned with said beam splitter along a first axis; a high bright superblack LCD mounted in a said housing for projecting a video image having the visual appearance of a three-dimensional object onto said beam splitter along a second axis perpendicular to said first axis; and means for minimizing glare and reflection from the surface of said beam splitter facing away from said spherical mirror.
- 45. The aerial projection system of claim 44 wherein said glare minimizing means comprises a polarizer.
- 46. The aerial projection system of claim 45 further comprising an antireflective coating on a surface of said polarizer facing away from said beam splitter.
- 47. The aerial projection system of claim 45 further comprising a transparent imaging device for displaying video information in combination with said video image.
- 48. The aerial projection system of claim 44 further comprising a communication port.
- 49. The aerial projection system of claim 44 further comprising a frame surrounding an edge portion of said high bright superblack LCD.
- 50. The aerial projection system of claim 44 wherein said beam splitter is comprises a plastic substrate.
- 51. The aerial projection system of claim 44 wherein said spherical mirror comprises a composite plastic mirror having a first plastic spherical mirror supported by a complementary second plastic spherical sheet.
- 52. The aerial projection system of claim 51 wherein said first spherical mirror is a molded sheet of optically clear acrylic.
- 53. The aerial projection system of claim 51 wherein said first spherical mirror comprises a reflecting layer on the backside.
- 54. The aerial projection system of claim 51 wherein said first spherical mirror is coupled to said second plastic spherical sheet by epoxy.
- 55. The aerial projection system of claim 44 wherein said glare minimizing means comprises a linear polarizer.
- 56. The aerial projection system of claim 44 wherein said glare minimizing means comprises a linear polarizer and a ¼ wave retarder.
- 57. The aerial projection system of claim 44 wherein said glare minimizing means comprises a circular polarizer.
- 58. The aerial projection system of claim 44 wherein said glare minimizing means is positioned proximate to said beam splitter.
- 59. The aerial projection system of claim 58 wherein said glare minimizing means is positioned parallel to said beam splitter.

This invention claims priority under pending Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 60/323,515 filed Sep. 18, 2001 entitled PROJECTION SYSTEM FOR AERIAL DISPLAY OF VIDEO IMAGES, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein for all purposes.
