Claims
- 1. A projection-type display device comprising a light source for producing light, color segregating means for receiving said light and segregating said light into at least two different colored lights, color image generating means having at least first and second transmissive light valves each of which receives one of said colored lights and generates color images in response thereto, each of said transmissive light valves having predetermined wavelength dependency characteristics of the extinction ratio, at lest one of said wavelength dependency characteristics of the extinction ratio of said first transmissive light valve being different than a corresponding wavelength dependency characteristic of the extinction ratio of said second transmissive light valve, color synthesizing means for synthesizing said color images and projection means for projecting said synthesized color images.
- 2. The projection-type display device as claimed in claim 1, wherein each said colored light has a primary wavelength, each said transmissive light valve having a maximum extinction ratio with respect to the primary wavelength of colored light passing therethrough.
- 3. The projection-type display device as claimed in claim 1, wherein each said light valve is a transmissive liquid crystal panel, each said liquid crystal panel having a thickness which is different from the thickness of the other liquid crystal panels.
- 4. The projection-type display device as claimed in claim 3, wherein each said liquid crystal panel has the same birefrigence .DELTA.n, the thickness of each liquid crystal panel being selected so that each liquid crystal panel has a maximum extinction ratio with respect to the primary wavelength of colored light passing therethrough.
- 5. The projection-type display device as claimed in claim 1, wherein each said light valve is a transmissive liquid crystal panel including a liquid crystal material having at least first and second peaks of a wavelength-light transmittance characteristic, the thickness of each said liquid crystal panel being selected to coincide with the second peak of the wavelength-light transmittance characteristic of the liquid crystal material therein.
- 6. The projection-type display device as claimed in claim 1, wherein each said light valve is a transmissive liquid crystal panel, said light source heating said panels to a constant temperature, the selected thickness of each said panel being dependent on said constant temperature.
- 7. The projection-type display device as claimed in claim 1, wherein each said light valve is a transmissive liquid crystal panel, each said panel including a plurality of picture elements arranged in a matrix array.
- 8. The projection-type display device as claimed in claim 7, wherein each said picture element is selectively actuated by an active element.
- 9. The projection-type display device as claimed in claim 7, wherein the pitch of said picture elements is equal in each said light valve.
- 10. The projection-type display device as claimed in claim 9, wherein the position of each said light valve is determined in a scale less than or equal to the pitch of the picture elements.
- 11. The projection-type display device as claimed in claim 10, wherein each light valve is positioned with respect to one another at a distance equal to about one-half pitch of the picture elements.
- 12. The projection-type display device as claimed in claim 1, further including drive means for producing a video signal for driving said light valves, said drive means including polarity invertor circuit means for selectively inverting the phase of the video signal.
- 13. The projection-type display device as claimed in claim 1, wherein each said colored light has a ray transmitting direction, the ray transmitting direction of the colored light for each light valve being inclined with respect to the normal line of the surface plane of each said light valve.
