Claims
- 1. An acetabular cup prosthesis for implantation into an acetabulum of a patient, comprising:
- a shell component having an outer surface for engaging said acetabulum and an inner cavity, wherein said inner cavity includes an annular wall sloped at an acute angle and said outer surface includes at least one ellipsoidally shaped region that defines an elliptical plane section having a major axis and a minor axis, said major axis being lodger than said minor axis, and
- a bearing insert within said inner cavity, said bearing insert including an exterior surface sloped at an angle supplementary to said acute angle, whereby a wedged condition occurs between said exterior surface of said bearing insert and said annular wall of said shell component operating to seat said bearing insert within said inner cavity and prevent the removal of said bearing insert from said inner cavity.
- 2. The acetabular cup according to claim 1, wherein a plurality of locking projections extend in toward said inner cavity from said shell component, said locking projections engaging said bearing insert, retaining said bearing insert in a set rotational position relative said shell component.
- 3. The acetabular cup according to claim 2, wherein said locking projections penetrate and engage said bearing insert when said bearing insert is assembled into said shell component.
- 4. The acetabular cup according to claim 1, wherein said bearing insert generally conforms to said inner cavity and said bearing insert fits within said inner cavity with an interference fit, whereby substantially no voids exist between said bearing insert and said shell component across surfaces that are in abutment.
- 5. The acetabular cup according to claim 1, wherein at least one annular groove is disposed within said shell component whereby said annular groove communicates with said inner cavity, said annular groove enabling cement to be positioned between said shell component and said bearing insert when said bearing insert is positioned within said shell component.
- 6. The acetabular cup according to claim 1, wherein said acute angle of inclination is approximately one degree.
- 7. The acetabular cup according to claim 1, wherein a plurality of screw holes are disposed in said shell component.
- 8. An acetabular cup prosthesis for implantation into an acetabulum of a patient, comprising:
- a shell component having an outer surface for engaging said acetabulum and an inner cavity, said outer surface including an apical region which merges into a rim region, wherein at least said apical region defines an ellipsoid having an elliptical plane section which includes a major axis and a minor axis, said major axis being longer than said minor axis; and
- a bearing insert within said inner cavity, said shell component and said bearing insert including an exterior surface which is adapted to be securely seated within said inner cavity of said shell component to prevent the removal of said bearing insert from said inner cavity.
- 9. An acetabular cup prosthesis for implantation into an acetabulum of a patient, comprising:
- a shell component having an outer surface for engaging said acetabulum and an inner cavity, said outer surface including an apical region which merges into a rim region, said apical region and said rim region each defining an ellipsoid having an elliptical plane section which includes a major axis and a minor axis, said major axis being longer than said minor axis; and
- a bearing insert within said inner cavity, said shell component and said bearing insert including an exterior surface which is adapted to be securely seated within said inner cavity of said shell component to prevent the removal of said bearing insert from said inner cavity.
- 10. The acetabular cup prosthesis according to claim 9, wherein said major axis and said minor axis of said apical region is different from said major axis and said minor axis of said rim region.
