Claims
- 1. A prosthetic component assembly for use in fixation to a bone, the prosthetic component assembly comprising:
a shell formed with an inner surface having an inner taper, said inner taper having an inner taper angle; and a liner configured to be received in said shell and formed with an outer surface having an outer taper, said outer taper having a first outer taper portion and a second outer taper portion, said first outer taper portion having a first outer taper angle and said second outer taper portion having a second outer taper angle; said first outer taper angle being less than or equal to said inner taper angle; and said second outer taper angle being greater than said inner taper angle in a pre-assembly state of said liner.
- 2. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 1, wherein said first and second outer taper portions are separated by an outer transition point, said outer transition point defining a substantially zero interference between said outer transition point and said inner taper in an assembled state of said liner and said shell.
- 3. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 2, wherein said outer transition point is positioned approximately ⅔ of a total length of said outer taper relative to an end point of said outer taper.
- 4. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 3, wherein said end point of said outer taper corresponds to an end point of said second outer taper.
- 5. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 1, wherein said liner is formed of polyethylene and said shell is formed of metal.
- 6. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 5, wherein said metal comprises one of titanium and cobalt chromium.
- 7. A prosthetic component assembly for use in fixation to a bone, the prosthetic component assembly comprising:
a shell formed with an inner surface having an inner taper, said inner taper having an inner taper angle; and a liner configured to be received in said shell and formed with an outer surface having an outer taper, said outer taper having a first outer taper portion and a second outer taper portion, said first outer taper portion defining a first outer taper angle and said second outer taper portion defining a second outer taper angle; said first outer taper angle being less than or equal to said inner taper angle; and said second outer taper angle being greater than or equal to said inner taper angle in a pre-assembly state of said liner.
- 8. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 7, wherein said first and second outer taper portions are separated by an outer transition point, said outer transition point defining a substantially zero interference between said outer transition point and said inner taper in an assembled state of said liner and said shell.
- 9. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 8, wherein said outer transition point is positioned approximately ⅔ of a total length of said outer taper relative to an end point of said outer taper.
- 10. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 9, wherein said end point of said outer taper corresponds to an end point of said second outer taper.
- 11. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 7, wherein said liner is formed of polyethylene and said shell is formed of metal.
- 12. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 11, wherein said metal comprises one of titanium and cobalt chromium.
- 13. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 1, wherein:
said liner is formed with a semi-hemispherical outer surface commencing from a termination point of said outer taper; and said shell is formed with a semi-hemispherical cavity commencing from a termination point of said inner taper and sized to receive said liner.
- 14. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 13, wherein said semi-spherical outer surface of said liner is substantially congruent with said semi-spherical cavity when said liner is assembled in said shell.
- 15. A prosthetic component assembly for use in fixation to a bone, the prosthetic component assembly comprising:
a shell formed with an inner surface having an inner taper, said inner taper having a first inner taper portion and a second inner taper portion, said first inner taper portion having a first inner angle and said second inner taper portion having a second inner angle; and a liner formed with an outer surface having an outer taper, said outer taper having a first outer taper portion and a second outer taper portion, said first outer taper portion having a first outer taper angle and said second outer taper portion having a second outer taper angle; said first outer taper angle being less than or equal to said first inner taper angle; and said second outer taper angle being greater than said second inner taper angle in a pre-assembly state of said liner.
- 16. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 15, wherein said first and second outer taper portions are separated by an outer transition point, and said first and second inner taper portions are separated by an inner transition point, said outer transition point defining a substantially zero interference between said outer transition point and said inner transition point in an assembled state of said liner and said shell.
- 17. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 16, wherein said outer transition point is positioned approximately ⅔ of a total length of said outer taper relative to an end point of said outer taper, and said inner transition point is positioned approximately ⅔ of a total length of said inner taper relative to an end point of said inner taper.
- 18. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 17, wherein said end point of said outer taper corresponds to an end point of said second outer taper, and said end point of said inner taper corresponds to an end point of said second inner taper.
- 19. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 15, wherein said liner is formed of polyethylene and said shell is formed of metal.
- 20. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 19, wherein said metal comprises one of titanium and cobalt chromium.
- 21. A method of assembling a prosthetic component assembly comprising the steps of:
providing a shell having a cavity with an inner surface, said inner surface having an inner taper, said inner taper having an inner taper angle; providing a liner having an outer surface with an outer taper, said outer taper having a first outer taper portion and a second outer taper portion, said first outer taper portion having a first outer taper angle and said second outer taper portion having a second outer taper angle, said first outer taper angle being substantially equal to said inner taper angle, and said second outer taper angle having a pre-assembled taper angle that is greater than said inner taper angle; and inserting said liner into said cavity of said shell until said second outer taper portion mechanically engages said inner taper and prevents further insertion of said liner into said cavity.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the step of inserting said liner into said cavity includes the step of radially inwardly compressing said second outer taper portion onto said inner taper while axially inserting said liner into said cavity.
- 23. A prosthetic component assembly for use in fixation to a bone, the prosthetic component assembly comprising:
a shell having an inner surface and an inner taper disposed on said inner surface; and a bearing insert having an outer surface with an outer taper disposed on said outer surface, said outer taper having a first outer taper portion and a second outer taper portion, said first outer taper portion configured to be substantially congruent with a portion of said inner taper portion when said bearing insert is assembled into said shell, and said second outer taper portion configured to provide an interference fit with another portion of said inner taper when said bearing insert is assembled into said shell.
- 24. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 23, wherein:
said inner taper has an inner taper angle; said first inner taper portion has a first inner taper angle that is substantially the same as said inner taper angle; and said second inner taper has a second inner taper angle that is greater than said second female taper angle.
- 25. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 23, wherein:
said inner taper has an inner taper angle; said first inner taper portion has a first inner taper angle that is substantially the same as said inner taper angle; and said second inner taper has a second inner taper angle that is greater than or equal to said second female taper angle.
- 26. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 23, wherein:
said inner taper has a first inner taper portion and a second inner taper portion; and said first outer taper portion is configured to be substantially congruent with said first inner taper portion when said bearing insert is assembled into said shell, and said second outer taper portion is configured to provide an interference fit with said second inner taper potion when said bearing insert is assembled into said shell.
- 27. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 26, wherein:
said inner taper has an inner transition point that separates said first inner taper portion and said second inner taper portion; said outer taper has an outer transition point that separates said first outer taper portion and said second outer taper portion, and said outer transition point defining a substantially zero interference between said outer transition point and said inner transition point in an assembled state of said liner and said shell.
- 28. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 27, wherein said outer transition point is positioned approximately ⅔ of a total length of said outer taper relative to an end point of said outer taper, and said inner transition point is positioned approximately ⅔ of a total length of said inner taper relative to an end point of said inner taper.
- 29. The prosthetic component assembly of claim 28, wherein said end point of said outer taper corresponds to an end point of said second outer taper, and said end point of said inner taper corresponds to an end point of said second inner taper.
