- 3. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein the pressure in said bladder can be adjusted to adjustably determine the energy storage and release characteristics of said foot member.
- 4. The prosthesis foot of claim 1, wherein said heel member is secured to the underside of said flexible support member with a pair of threaded fasteners.
- 5. The prosthesis of claim 4, wherein said flexible support member and said heel member are secured relative to one another such that when a load is placed on said heel member, said lower section of said flexible support member separates from said distal end of said auxiliary support member.
- 6. The prosthesis of claim 5, wherein a retainer is provided to restrain said lower section of said flexible support member from separating apart from said distal end of said auxiliary support member, so as to prevent excessive stress on said support members.
- 7. The prosthesis of claim 4, wherein a second bladder is positioned adjacent said heel member to absorb shock.
- 8. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said auxiliary support member is capable of storing and releasing energy, wherein the upward flexing of said flexible support member causes said bladder to be compressed between said flexible support member and said auxiliary support member, and to activate the energy storage and release characteristics of said auxiliary support member such that the energy storage and release characteristics of said foot member are provided by the cooperation of said bladder, said flexible support member and said auxiliary support member.
- 9. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said pylon member is of tubular construction and is substantially rigid.
- 10. The prosthesis of claim 1, wherein said pylon includes an attachment surface which is substantially vertically oriented and located on the back side of said lower portion of said pylon member, wherein said upper section of said flexible support member is also substantially vertically oriented such that it may be operatively secured to said attachment surface.
- 11. A lower limb prosthesis adapted to be secured to an amputee's stump for supporting said amputee relative to a ground surface, said prosthesis comprising:
- a pylon member having an upper portion and a lower portion, said upper portion being operatively securable to said amputee's stump, said lower portion adapted to extend downward from said stump to a location substantially above a normal foot; and
- a foot member adapted to be attached to said lower portion of said pylon member, said foot member comprising:
- a flexible support member capable of providing energy storage and release, and of supporting said amputee, said flexible support member having an upper section and a lower section, said upper section being operatively secured to said lower portion of said pylon member and extending relatively downward therefrom, said lower section extending relatively downward and forward from said upper section;
- an auxiliary support member having a proximal end and a distal end, said proximal end of said auxiliary support member being operatively secured to said pylon member and/or said upper section of said flexible support member, and said distal end being associated with said lower section of said flexible support member such that a space is formed therebetween, wherein during utilization of said prosthesis said lower section of said flexible support member flexes and moves relative to said distal end of said auxiliary support member;
- a bladder positioned in said space between said lower section of said flexible support member and said distal end of said auxiliary support member, said bladder cooperating with said flexible support member and said auxiliary support member to adjustably determine the energy storage and release characteristics of said foot member; and
- a strap positioned in operative relationship with said lower section of said flexible support member and said distal end of said auxiliary support member, said strap functioning to hold said bladder adjacent and between said support members.
- 12. A foot prosthesis for supporting an amputee relative to a ground surface, said foot prosthesis comprising:
- a flexible forefoot member extending downward and forward from a substantially vertical section adapted to support said amputee to a distal end adapted to contact said ground surface, said forefoot member having a cross-sectional configuration that is substantially more flexible in the fore-and-aft direction than in the side-to-side direction such that it is capable of supporting said amputee and of providing energy storage and release during normal walking or running activities;
- an auxiliary support member extending downward and forward relative to said forefoot member so as to define a space between said auxiliary support member and said forefoot member, said auxiliary support member having a substantially free distal end which is adapted to move in a translatory manner relative to said distal end of said forefoot member during normal walking or running activities; and
- a bladder positioned in said space formed between said forefoot member and said auxiliary support member such that when a load is placed on said forefoot member, said bladder is compressed between said forefoot member and said auxiliary support member, wherein the cooperation of said bladder, said forefoot member and said auxiliary support member determines the prosthetic foot's energy storage and release characteristics.
- 13. The foot prosthesis of claim 12, wherein said bladder can be adjusted or replaced to adjustably determine the energy storage characteristics of said prosthetic foot.
- 14. The foot prosthesis of claim 12, wherein said bladder includes a valve, whereby said valve can be used to adjustably inflate said bladder without having to remove said bladder from said foot prosthesis.
- 15. The foot prosthesis of claim 12, further comprising a heel member secured to said forefoot member and extending rearwardly therefrom.
- 16. The foot prosthesis of claim 15, wherein a second bladder is positioned adjacent said heel member such that said second bladder provides additional energy absorption, storage and release.
- 17. The foot prosthesis of claim 12, wherein a retainer is provided which helps secure said bladder in position between said forefoot member and said auxiliary support member in order to prevent the excessive separation of said forefoot member from said auxiliary support member.
