Claims
- 1. A method attaching an implant to a bone comprising the steps of:
- positioning pattern means with cutting path means along a bone;
- affixing the pattern means to a bone;
- interconnecting milling means with the pattern means, the milling means having more than one cutting area to form a curvilinear cutting profile;
- traversing the cutting means along the cutting path means of the pattern means to cut a bone; and
- attaching an implant having a curvilinear fixation profile to a curvilinear surface cut in a bone.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the inner contact surface of the implant has a geometry matching a cut in a bone having a curvilinear surface, and the step of attaching the implant to a resected bone includes the step of contacting the inner contact surface of the implant against a resected bone.
- 3. The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of using more than one milling bit to resect a bone, each milling bit having a different diameter or profile to form a curvilinear cut in a bone extending along a medio-lateral direction.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the inner surface of the implant is smaller in size than a bone to which it is to be attached and the step of attaching the implant to a bone comprises the step of press-fitting the implant onto a bone.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of affixing the pattern means to a bone comprises the steps of attaching pattern means to opposing sides of a bone.
- 6. A method for attaching an implant to a bone comprising the steps of:
- positioning pattern plates with cutting paths along opposite sides of a femur;
- affixing the patten plates to opposite sides of a femur;
- inserting a cutting means through the cutting paths, the cutting means having more than one cutting area to form a curvilinear cutting profile;
- traversing the cutting means along the cutting paths to form a curvilinear surface on a femur; and
- attaching an implant having a curvilinear fixation profile to a curvilinear surface cut in a femur.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the inner contact surface of the implant has a geometry matching a cut in a bone having a curvilinear surface, and the step of attaching the implant to a resected bone includes the step of contacting the inner contact surface of the implant against a resected bone.
- 8. The method of claim 7 further comprising the step of using more than one milling bit to resect a bone, each milling bit having a different diameter or profile to form a curvilinear cut in a bone extending along a medio-lateral direction.
- 9. The method of claim 6 wherein the inner surface of the implant is smaller in size than a bone to which it is to be attached and the step of attaching the implant to a bone comprises the step of press-fitting the implant onto a bone.
- 10. A method for attaching an implant to a bone comprising the steps of:
- positioning pattern means alongside a surface of a bone to be cut, the pattern means including cutting path means, the cutting path means comprising at least two continuous guide surfaces for making non-coplanar surfaces in bone;
- interconnecting cutting means with the cutting path means, the cutting means having more than one cutting area to form a curvilinear cutting profile;
- traversing the cutting means along the cutting path means for cutting a bone; and
- attaching an implant having a curvilinear fixation profile and a curvilinear fixation path to a curvilinear surface cut in a bone.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the inner contact surface of the implant has a geometry matching a cut in a bone having a curvilinear surface, and the step of attaching the implant to a resected bone includes the step of contacting the inner contact surface of the implant against a resected bone.
- 12. The method of claim 11 further comprising the step of using more than one milling bit to resect a bone, each milling bit having a different diameter or profile to form a curvilinear cut in a bone extending along a medio-lateral direction.
- 13. The method of claim 10 wherein the inner surface of the implant is smaller in size than a bone to which it is to be attached and the step of attaching the implant to a bone comprises the step of press-fitting the implant onto a bone.
- 14. The method of claim 10 wherein the step of affixing the pattem means to a bone comprises the steps of attaching pattern means to opposing sides of a bone.
