Claims
- 1. A hockey glove having a thumb member having a palm side and a back side, the thumb member being padded and comprising a rigid articulating skeleton, the skeleton comprising at least two sections pivotably joined together at a pivot, the sections adapted to be rotatable relative to each other to allow the skeleton to rotate between a closed position and an open position, and at least one section includes a stop adapted to prevent rotation in an open direction beyond the open position, the thumb member having a longitudinal axis and wherein the pivot is disposed on the palm side of the axis and the stop is disposed on the back side of the axis.
- 2. The hockey glove of claim 1, wherein a second section is joined to a first section, and the stop comprises a notch formed in the first section.
- 3. The hockey glove of claim 2, wherein the first section has an extending member, and the extending member is overlapped by at least a portion of the second section.
- 4. The hockey glove of claim 1, wherein the skeleton includes a first section, a third section, and a second section, and the first section is pivotally connected to the second section and the second section is pivotally connected to the third section.
- 5. The hockey glove of claim 4, wherein the second section includes a bend, and the skeleton is adapted to substantially conform to a natural relaxed position of a wearer's thumb.
- 6. The hockey glove of claim 4, wherein at least a portion of the second section overlaps a portion of the first section and a portion of the third section overlaps a portion of the second section.
- 7. The glove of claim 1, wherein the glove has a palm, a protective back extending over the palm, and a plurality of finger gussets adapted to accommodate the wearer's fingers, and a plurality of padding segments are disposed on a back side of the skeleton.
- 8. The glove of claim 7, wherein a reinforcing strip of material is disposed on the palm, and the reinforcing strip is oriented so that when the glove is closed about a stick, the reinforcing strip extends generally parallel to the stick.
- 9. The glove of claim 8, wherein at least one of the plurality of padding segments comprises foam sandwiched between an inner liner and an outer cover.
- 10. The glove of claim 7 additionally comprising a padded cuff, and the cuff is wider along a back side of the glove than on a palm side of the glove.
- 11. The glove of claim 10 additionally comprising a padded cuff roll, and the cuff roll is wider along a back side of the glove than on a palm side of the glove.
- 12. The glove of claim 11, wherein the cuff roll comprises a generally rigid insert.
- 13. A pair of protective sports gloves comprising the glove of claim 10 and a second glove, each of the gloves comprising a palm and a protective back extending over the palm, the protective back comprising a plurality of padding segments, wherein more padding is provided at or adjacent the back of the first glove than is provided at or adjacent the back of the second glove.
- 14. The glove of claim 7, wherein the thumb skeleton is oriented at an angle of about 30-40° relative to the palm.
- 15. The glove of claim 14, wherein a reinforcing strip of material is disposed on the palm, and the reinforcing strip is oriented so that when the glove is closed about a stick, the reinforcing strip extends generally parallel to the stick.
- 16. The glove of claim 15, wherein at least one of the plurality of padding segments comprises foam sandwiched between an inner liner and an outer cover.
- 17. The glove of claim 16 additionally comprising a padded cuff, and the cuff is wider along a back side of the glove than on a palm side of the glove.
- 18. A pair of protective sports gloves comprising the glove of claim 14 and a second glove, each of the gloves comprising a palm and a protective back extending over the palm, and a plurality of finger gussets adapted to accommodate the wearer's fingers, wherein at least one of the finger gussets is configured to accommodate more than one of the wearer's fingers.
- 19. A pair of protective sports gloves as in claim 18, wherein one of the gloves has one less finger gusset than the other of the gloves.
- 20. A pair of protective sports gloves comprising the glove of claim 14, and a second glove, each of the gloves comprising a palm and a protective back extending over the palm, wherein the gloves are not symmetrical to one another.
- 21. A hockey glove having a thumb member, the thumb member being padded and comprising a rigid articulating skeleton, the skeleton comprising at least two sections pivotably joined together, a second section being joined to a first section, the sections adapted to be rotatable relative to each other to allow rotation between a closed position and an open position, the skeleton including locking means for preventing rotation of the sections in an open direction beyond the open position, the locking means comprising a notch formed in the first section, wherein the first section has an extending member, and the extending member is overlapped by at least a portion of the second section, and wherein outer surfaces of the sections are substantially flush with one another when the sections are in the open position.
- 22. The glove of claim 21, wherein a plurality of padding segments are disposed on a back side of the skeleton.
- 23. The glove of claim 22, wherein the thumb skeleton is oriented at an angle of about 30-40° relative to a palm of the glove.
- 24. The glove of claim 23, wherein the palm comprises a generally elongate strip of material attached thereto, and the strip is oriented so that when the glove is closed about a stick, the strip extends generally parallel to the stick.
- 25. A hockey glove having a thumb member, the thumb member being padded and comprising a rigid articulating skeleton, the skeleton comprising at least two sections pivotably joined together, the sections adapted to be rotatable relative to each other to allow rotation between a closed position and an open position, the skeleton including locking means for preventing rotation of the sections in an open direction beyond the open position, wherein a second section is joined to a first section, and wherein the locking means comprises a ridge formed on the first section, and wherein outer surfaces of the sections are substantially flush with one another when the sections are in the open position.
- 26. The glove of claim 25, wherein the glove has a palm, a protective back extending over the palm, and a plurality of finger gussets adapted to accommodate the wearer's fingers, and a plurality of padding segments are disposed on a back side of the skeleton.
- 27. The glove of claim 26, wherein at least one of the plurality of padding segments comprises foam sandwiched between an inner liner and an outer cover.
- 28. A protective sports glove having a thumb member and a plurality of finger gussets adapted to accommodate the wearer's fingers, at least one finger gusset being configured to accommodate more than one finger, the thumb member comprising a substantially rigid articulating skeleton comprising at least two thumb sections and a stop, the sections being rotatable relative to one another so that the skeleton is rotatable between a closed position and an open position, the stop adapted to prevent relative rotation of the sections in an open direction beyond the open position, and wherein outer surfaces of the sections are substantially flush with one another when the sections are in the open position.
- 29. The glove of claim 28, wherein the skeleton includes a first section, a third section, and a second section, and the first section is pivotally connected to the second section and the second section is pivotally connected to the third section.
- 30. The glove of claim 29, wherein the second section includes a bend, and the skeleton is adapted to substantially conform to a natural relaxed position of a wearer's thumb.
- 31. The glove of claim 29, wherein at least a portion of the second section overlaps a portion of the first section and a portion of the third section overlaps a portion of the second section.
- 32. A pair of protective sports gloves each having a thumb member, the thumb members comprising a substantially rigid articulating skeleton comprising at least two thumb sections and a stop, the sections being rotatable relative to one another so that the skeleton is rotatable between a closed position and an open position, the stop adapted to prevent relative rotation of the sections in an open direction beyond the open position, each of the gloves further comprising a palm and a protective back extending over the palm and having at least one segment adapted to provide padding for a wearer's hand disposed within the glove, wherein more padding is provided at or adjacent the back of one glove than is provided at or adjacent the back of the other glove.
- 33. The pair of protective sports gloves of claim 32, wherein outer surfaces of the sections are substantially flush with one another when the sections are in the open position.
- 34. The pair of protective sports gloves of claim 32, wherein the sections are connected to one another at a connection portion, and the sections rotate about the connection portion.
- 35. The pair of protective sports gloves of claim 34, wherein the sections overlap one another at the connection portion.
- 36. The pair of protective sports gloves of claim 35, wherein each glove has a palm side and a back side, the thumb member has a longitudinal axis, and the connection portion is disposed on the palm side of the axis and the stop is disposed on the back side of the axis.
- 37. The pair of protective sports gloves of claim 32, wherein the skeleton fits around a back and at least portions of two sides of the thumb.
- 38. The pair of protective sports gloves of claim 32, wherein at least one of the sections is bent or curved to approximate the shape of a relaxed thumb.
- 39. The pair of protective sports gloves of claim 32, wherein the stop is disposed on at least one of the sections.
- 40. The pair of protective sports gloves of claim 32, wherein the sections are configured so that portions of adjacent sections engage each other to stop rotation beyond the open position.
- 41. The pair of protective sports gloves of claim 32, additionally comprising a plurality of finger gussets adapted to accommodate the wearer's fingers, and at least one finger gusset is configured to accommodate more than one finger.
