Claims
- 1. A protective helmet comprising:
an outer shell; an inner liner comprised of impact absorbing material having suitable impact attenuation properties to protect a wearer of said protective helmet, said inner liner joined to said outer shell to form a shell/liner composite; a plurality of ventilation ports positioned within said protective helmet, said ventilation ports providing an access for ambient air to enter and exit an interior portion of said protective helmet; a ventilation system integrally coupled to said protective helmet and interacting with at least one of said plurality of ventilation ports to control flow of said ambient air into and out of said interior portion of said protective helmet, said ventilation system encased within said shell/liner composite and comprising:
an upper member; a lower member coupled to said upper member to form a vent box having a volume of space; a vent shield contained within said volume of space of said vent box, said vent shield capable of displacing within said vent box in relation to said at least one ventilation port; and an actuator coupled to said vent shield and extending to the exterior of said protective helmet for activating said displacement of said vent shield.
- 2. The protective helmet of claim 1, wherein said outer shell is joined to said inner liner by bonding said inner liner to said outer shell to form said shell/liner composite.
- 3. The protective helmet of claim 1, wherein said outer shell is joined to said inner liner by molding said inner liner to said outer shell to form said shell/liner composite.
- 4. The protective helmet of claim 1, wherein said vent shield is displaced in relation to said ventilation port, such that said access to said interior portion of said protective helmet through said at least one ventilation port may be selected from the group consisting of either open, partially open, or closed to ambient air.
- 5. The protective helmet of claim 1, wherein said vent shield displaces in a bi-directional sliding manner relative to said at least one ventilation port.
- 6. The protective helmet of claim 1, wherein said ventilation system is an active ventilation system in that ambient air flow into said interior portion of said protective helmet through said at least one ventilation port is specifically controlled.
- 7. The protective helmet of claim 1, wherein at least one of said plurality of ventilation ports serves as a passive ventilation system wherein ambient air may flow into said interior portion of said protective helmet.
- 8. The protective helmet of claim 7, wherein said passive ventilation system comprises a louvered cover designed to facilitate the removal of air out of said interior of said protective helmet.
- 9. The protective helmet of claim 1, wherein said ventilation system controls a plurality ventilation ports simultaneously.
- 10. The protective helmet of claim 1, wherein said protective helmet comprises a plurality of ventilation systems.
- 11. The protective helmet of claim 1, wherein said ventilation system further comprises a series of louvers contained therein that are designed to facilitate the removal of air from said interior of said protective helmet.
- 12. A protective helmet comprising:
an outer shell; an inner liner comprised of impact absorbing material having suitable impact attenuation properties to protect a wearer of said protective helmet, said inner liner joined to said outer shell to form a shell/liner composite; a plurality of ventilation ports positioned within said protective helmet, said ventilation ports providing an access for ambient air to enter and exit an interior portion of said protective helmet; a ventilation system coupled directly to the shell portion of said shell/liner composite of said protective helmet and interacting with at least one of said plurality of ventilation ports to control said access of said ambient air to said interior portion of said protective helmet, said ventilation system comprising:
a vent box formed by coupling an upper member to a lower member, wherein a volume of space is created; a vent shield contained within said volume of space of said vent box, said vent shield capable of displacing within said vent box in relation to said at least one ventilation port; and an actuator coupled to said vent shield for activating said displacement of said vent shield.
- 13. The protective helmet of claim 12, wherein said outer shell comprises said lower member of said vent box.
- 14. The protective helmet of claim 12, further comprising a second shell coupled to said outer shell, said vent box contained between said outer shell and said second shell.
- 15. The protective helmet of claim 14, wherein said second shell comprises said upper member of said vent box.
- 16. The protective helmet of claim 14, wherein said outer shell comprises said lower member of said vent box and said second shell comprises said upper member of said vent box, such that said vent shield is contained therein.
- 17. The protective helmet of claim 12, wherein said ventilation system is a self-contained ventilation system.
- 18. The protective helmet of claim 12, wherein said ventilation system comprises a series of louvers thereon designed to facilitate the removal of air from said interior of said protective helmet.
- 19. A protective helmet comprising:
an outer shell; an inner liner comprised of impact absorbing material having suitable impact attenuation properties to protect a wearer of said protective helmet, said inner liner joined to said outer shell to form a shell/liner composite; a plurality of ventilation ports positioned within said protective helmet, said ventilation ports providing an access for ambient air to enter an interior portion of said protective helmet; a ventilation system coupled to said shell portion of said shell/liner composite of said protective helmet and interacting with at least one of said plurality of ventilation ports to control said access of said ambient air to said interior portion of said protective helmet, said ventilation system comprising:
an interchangeable insert member.
- 20. The protective helmet of claim 19, wherein said interchangeable insert member is an active, self-contained ventilation system comprising:
a vent box formed by coupling an upper member to a lower member, wherein a volume of space is created; a vent shield contained within said volume of space of said vent box, said vent shield capable of displacing within said vent box in relation to said at least one ventilation port; and an actuator coupled to said vent shield for activating said displacement of said vent shield.
- 21. The protective helmet of claim 19, wherein said interchangeable insert member is a stopper for completely cutting off ambient airflow into said interior of said protective helmet.
- 22. The protective helmet of claim 19, wherein said interchangeable insert member is a screen or filter system.
- 23. The protective helmet of claim 22, wherein said screen or filter system comprises a series of louvers therein designed to facilitate the removal of air from said interior of said protective helmet.
- 24. The protective helmet of claim 19, wherein said ventilation system is a passive ventilation system.
- 25. The protective helmet of claim 24, wherein said passive ventilation system utilizes a series of louvers designed to facilitate the removal of air from said interior of said protective helmet.
- 26. The protective helmet of claim 19, wherein said ventilation system is removably coupled to said protective helmet.
- 27. The protective helmet of claim 19, wherein said interchangeable insert member is capable of being relocated to a second position while remaining coupled to said protective helmet, wherein said wearer may cause said ventilation system to toggle between an active ventilation system and a passive ventilation system.
- 28. The protective helmet of claim 19, further comprising a recessed portion in said shell/liner composite, said recessed portion adapted to house and couple said interchangeable insert member within and to said protective helmet, said recessed portion containing at least one ventilation port therein.
- 29. A protective helmet comprising:
an outer shell; an inner liner comprised of impact absorbing material having suitable impact attenuation properties to protect a wearer of said protective helmet, said inner liner joined to said outer shell to form a shell/liner composite, said shell/liner composite having at least one recessed portion therein, said recessed portion containing a ventilation port through which ambient air may flow into an interior portion of said protective helmet; a ventilation system coupled to said recessed portion, such that said ventilation system interacts with said ventilation port within said recessed portion to control said ambient air flow, said ventilation system comprising:
a vent box comprised of an upper member and a lower member, wherein said lower member is comprised of a portion of said outer shell located within said recessed portion, said vent box having a volume of space defined by the formation of said upper and lower members; a vent shield contained within said volume of space of said vent box, said vent shield capable of displacing within said vent box relative to said ventilation port; and an actuator coupled to said vent shield for activating said displacement of said vent shield.
- 30. The protective helmet of claim 29, wherein said upper member is capable of fitting and being coupled within said recessed portion.
- 31. The protective helmet of claim 29, wherein said ventilation system is removably coupled to said protective helmet.
- 32. A protective helmet comprising:
an outer shell; an inner liner comprised of impact absorbing material having suitable impact attenuation properties to protect a wearer of said protective helmet, said inner liner joined to said outer shell to form a shell/liner composite; at least one ventilation port formed in said shell/liner composite; a ventilation system coupled to shell/liner composite, such that said ventilation system interacts with said ventilation port to control said ambient air flow, said ventilation system comprising:
a vent shield capable of displacing relative to said ventilation port.
- 33. The protective helmet of claim 32, further comprising a recessed portion in said shell/liner composite, said recessed portion adapted to interact with said ventilation system to control said ambient air flow.
- 34. A protective helmet comprising:
an outer shell; an inner liner comprised of impact absorbing material having suitable impact attenuation properties to protect a wearer of said protective helmet, said inner liner joined to said outer shell to form a shell/liner composite; a plurality of ventilation ports positioned within said protective helmet, said ventilation ports providing an access for ambient air to enter an interior portion of said protective helmet; a ventilation system coupled to said protective helmet and interacting with at least one of said plurality of ventilation ports to control said access of said ambient air to said interior portion of said protective helmet, said ventilation system comprising:
at least one releasable attachment point for allowing said ventilation system to relocate to a second position relative to said ventilation port, while still coupled to said protective helmet;
- 35. The protective helmet of claim 34, wherein said ventilation system is a self-contained ventilation system.
- 36. The protective helmet of claim 34, wherein said ventilation system is a stopper.
- 37. The protective helmet of claim 34, wherein said ventilation system is a vent shield.
- 38. The protective helmet of claim 34, wherein said ventilation system is a screen or filter system.
- 39. The protective helmet of claim 38, wherein said screen or filter system comprises a series of louvers thereon designed to facilitate the removal of air from said interior of said protective helmet.
- 40. The protective helmet of claim 34, wherein said ventilation system is comprised of a vent box having an upper and lower member and a vent shield contained therein, said vent shield capable of displacing relative to said ventilation port.
- 41. The protective helmet of claim 40, wherein said outer shell defines said lower member.
- 42. The protective helmet of claim 34, wherein said ventilation system is removably coupled to said protective helmet.
- 43. The protective helmet of claim 34, further comprising a second attachment point for securing said ventilation system in said second relocated position.
- 44. The protective helmet of claim 34, wherein said ventilation port is a passive ventilation port when said ventilation system is in said second relocated position.
- 45. The protective helmet of claim 34, wherein said ventilation system is an active ventilation system in that ambient air flow into said interior portion of said protective helmet through said at least one ventilation port is specifically controlled.
- 46. The protective helmet of claim 34, wherein said ventilation system comprises a series of louvers therein designed to facilitate the removal of air from said interior of said protective helmet.
