Claims
- 1. A porous, breathable pad for use as protective padding by a person to absorb the force of an impact and to protect the user from injury while allowing liquids and air to freely pass through the pad, said pad having a plurality of discrete beads of substantially inelastic and waterproof material wherein portions of adjacent beads abut one another and other portions of said adjacent beads are spaced from each other to create interstitial spaces, at least some of said adjacent beads being fused together at the abutting portions thereof wherein said beads are made of closed-cell foam and wherein said pad further includes an outer casing of porous, breathable material enclosing said plurality of beads.
- 2. The pad of claim 1 wherein substantially all of said adjacent beads are fused together at the abutting portions thereof.
- 3. The pad of claim 1 wherein said fused beads form a predetermined shape.
- 4. The pad of claim 1 wherein said interstitial spaces are substantially uniformly distributed throughout the pad.
- 5. The pad of claim 1 further including a hard, outer shell.
- 6. A porous, breathable pad having a plurality of discrete beads of substantially inelastic and waterproof material wherein portions of adjacent beads abut one another and other portions of said adjacent beads are spaced from each other to create interstitial spaces and wherein at least some of said adjacent beads are fused together at the abutting portions thereof, the pad further including an outer casing of porous, breathable material enclosing said plurality of beads wherein said outer casing is made of substantially waterproof material.
- 7. The pad of claim 6 wherein said beads are made of closed-cell foam.
- 8. The pad of claim 6 wherein substantially all of said adjacent beads are fused together at the abutting portions thereof.
- 9. The pad of claim 6 wherein said fused beads form a predetermined shape.
- 10. The pad of claim 6 wherein said outer casing is in tension about the enclosed beads.
- 11. The pad of claim 6 wherein said interstitial spaces are substantially uniformly distributed throughout the pad.
- 12. The pad of claim 6 further including a hard, outer shell.
- 13. A porous, breathable pad having a plurality of discrete beads of substantially inelastic and waterproof material wherein portions of adjacent beads abut one another and other portions of said adjacent beads are spaced from each other to create interstitial spaces and wherein at least some of said adjacent beads are fused together at the abutting portions thereof, the pad further including an outer casing of porous, breathable material enclosing said plurality of beads wherein said outer casing is in tension about the enclosed beads.
- 14. The pad of claim 13 wherein said beads are made of closed-cell foam.
- 15. The pad of claim 13 wherein substantially all of said adjacent beads are fused together at the abutting portions thereof.
- 16. The pad of claim 13 wherein said fused beads form a predetermined shape.
- 17. The pad of claim 13 wherein said outer casing is made of substantially waterproof material.
- 18. The pad of claim 13 wherein said interstitial spaces are substantially uniformly distributed throughout the pad.
- 19. The pad of claim 13 further including a hard, outer shell.
