Claims
- 1. A travel case comprising:
a protective outer enclosure, at least a portion of which includes,
a flexible skin, and a plurality of substantially rigid impact resistant panels positioned adjacent the flexible skin, the plurality of panels being adapted to conform to the shape of the flexible skin as it is flexed.
- 2. The travel case of claim 1 wherein each of the panels is coupled to the skin.
- 3. The travel case of claim 2 wherein each of the panels is coupled to the skin by a hinge.
- 4. The travel case of claim 2 wherein each of the panels is polygonal, and hinged to the skin along a panel edge.
- 5. The travel case of claim 1 wherein at least two of the panels are overlapped.
- 6. The travel case of claim 4, wherein the protective outer enclosure is configured to flex from a first configuration to a second configuration, thereby altering the footprint of the overlapped panels.
- 7. The travel case of claim 6, wherein the protective outer enclosure is configured to be laterally compressed.
- 8. The travel case of claim 7, including panels configured to increasingly overlap as protective outer enclosure is compressed.
- 9. The travel case of claim 6, wherein the protective outer enclosure is configured to be laterally expanded.
- 10. The travel case of claim 9, including panels configured to decreasingly overlap as protective outer enclosure is expanded.
- 11. The travel case of claim 9, including panels configured to abut when protective outer enclosure is fully expanded.
- 12. The travel case of claim 6 wherein the protective outer enclosure is configured to be flexed concavely.
- 13. The travel case of claim 12 including panels configured to overlap during concave flexion of the protective outer enclosure.
- 14. The travel case of claim 6 wherein the protective outer enclosure is configured to be flexed convexly.
- 15. The travel case of claim 14 including panels configured to overlap during convex flexion of the protective outer enclosure.
- 16. The travel case of claim 6, wherein the protective outer enclosure is configured to be flexed in a fan-shaped manner.
- 17. The travel case of claim 16 including panels configured to radially overlap during fan-shaped flexion of the protective outer enclosure
- 18. The travel case of claim 1 wherein the travel case is adapted to receive a golf bag.
- 19. The travel case of claim 1 wherein at least one of the impact resistant panels includes a malleable material.
- 20. The travel case of claim 19, wherein the malleable material is selected from the group consisting of foam, cotton batting, and rubber.
- 21. The travel case of claim 19 wherein the pliant material is mounted on a rigid backing material.
- 22. The travel case of claim 1, wherein the flexible skin is an outer skin and the plurality of panels are mounted inward of the outer skin, the enclosure further including a flexible inner skin positioned inwardly adjacent the plurality of panels.
- 23. The travel case of claim 22, wherein the inner and outer flexible skins form a housing that limits the range of motion of the panels.
- 24. The travel case of claim 1 further including a locking mechanism adapted to temporarily and reversibly lock at least one of the panels into a first orientation.
- 25. A pliant protective structure comprising:
a first flexible liner; and a plurality of substantially rigid overlapped panels positioned adjacent the first flexible liner, wherein each panel includes a casing at least partially enclosing a body of material providing impact resistance and structural support.
- 26. The structure of claim 25, wherein the body providing impact resistance and structural support comprises multiple layers.
- 27. The structure of claim 26, wherein the multiple layers comprise:
a layer of substantially rigid material; and a layer of malleable material.
- 28. The structure of claim 25, wherein the body providing impact resistance and structural support is formed of a single layer of material.
- 29. The structure of claim 25 further comprising a second flexible liner, wherein the panels are positioned between the first and second liners.
- 30. The structure of claim 25 wherein at least one of the panels is attached to the first liner.
- 31. The structure of claim 30 wherein the panel is attached to the first liner at a single seam line.
- 32. The structure of claim 31 wherein the single seam line is located on an edge of the panel and acts as a hinge for the panel.
- 33. A travel bag including a protective outer enclosure wherein the protective outer enclosure comprises:
a first flexible liner; and a plurality of substantially rigid overlapped panels positioned adjacent the first flexible liner, wherein each panel includes a casing at least partially enclosing a body of material providing impact resistance and structural support.
