Claims
- 1. In a method of making a pulley construction comprising the steps of forming said pulley construction to have a pair of opposed flanges respectively provided with surface means for engagement with a V-belt construction when said V-belt construction is disposed therebetween, forming said pulley construction to have means for moving one of said flanges axially relative to the other of said flanges, and forming said pulley construction to have fluid dampening means operatively associated with said one flange to dampen said axial movement of said one flange relative to said other flange with a restrictive force, the improvement comprising the steps of forming said dampening means to comprise a flexible bladder, and operatively interconnecting a part of said bladder to said one flange.
- 2. A method of making a pulley construction as set forth in claim 1 and including the steps of forming said pulley construction to have a section that is fixed from axial movement relative to said one flange, and operatively interconnecting another part of said bladder to said section.
- 3. A method of making a pulley construction as set forth in claim 1 and including the step of forming said pulley construction to have a housing means cooperating with said bladder to define a fluid chamber therebetween whereby said housing means and said bladder comprise said fluid dampening means.
- 4. A method of making a pulley construction as set forth in claim 3 and including the steps of forming said housing means to have orifice means passing therethrough and leading from said fluid chamber to the exterior of said housing means, and causing said one flange to change the volume of said fluid chamber by moving said part of said bladder whereby fluid flow between said chamber and said exterior of said pulley construction through said orifice means provides said restrictive force for dampening axial movement of said one flange relative to said other flange.
- 5. A method of making a pulley construction as set forth in claim 4 and including the step of forming said orifice means to comprise a plurality of openings through said housing means.
- 6. A method of making a pulley construction as set forth in claim 4 and including the step of forming said orifice means to have adjusting means for changing the flow rate therethrough and, thus, for changing said restrictive force.
- 7. A method of making a pulley construction as set forth in claim 4 and including the step of operatively interconnecting said housing means to said one flange so as to be movable therewith.
- 8. A method of making a pulley construction as set forth in claim 7 and including the steps of forming said pulley construction to have a hub means for interconnecting to a rotatable shaft, forming said housing means to be axially movable on said hub means, disposing seal means of said housing means against said hub means, interconnecting another part of said bladder to said hub means, fixing said other flange to said hub means to rotate therewith, and interconnecting said one flange to said hub means so as to be axially movable relative thereto while being rotatable therewith.
- 9. A method of making a pulley construction as set forth in claim 8 and including the steps of forming said bladder to comprise a flexible diaphragm-like member having an inner peripheral means and an outer peripheral means, and forming said one part of said bladder to comprise said outer peripheral means and said other part of said bladder to comprise said inner peripheral means.
- 10. In the combination of a V-belt construction and a pulley construction having a pair of opposed flanges respectively provided with surface means engaging against said V-belt construction that is disposed therebetween, said pulley construction having means for moving one of said flanges axially relative to the other of said flanges, said pulley construction having fluid dampening means operatively associated with said one flange to dampen said axial movement of said one flange relative to said other flange with a restrictive force, the improvement wherein said dampening means comprises a flexible bladder having a part thereof operatively interconnected to said one flange.
- 11. A combination as set forth in claim 10 wherein said means for moving said one flange of said pulley construction comprises speed responsive means.
