Claims
- 1. An apparatus for controlling an electric machine in a first mode of operation and for charging a battery in a second mode of operation, comprising:
- a control circuit connected to said battery and said electric machine, said control circuit including switch means having an electronic switch for selectively effecting electrical connection of said electric machine to said battery in said first mode of operation;
- control means for providing switching command signals to said switch means to cause said electronic switch to open and close in a cyclic manner; and
- means for charging said battery, including a diode, a transformer having inductively coupled first and second windings, and a power source; said diode, said first winding and said battery being connected in series in a first circuit loop; said diode being oriented to resist a discharge current flow from said battery through said first winding; said second winding, said electronic switch and said power source being connected in series in a second circuit loop; and said power source urging a current flow through said second winding and electronic switch in one direction during said second mode of operation, whereby when said electronic switch closes during said second mode of operation, said power source causes current to flow in said one direction through said second winding so that energy builds up in said second winding in the form of an electro-magnetic field, and when said electronic switch opens during said second mode of operation and interrupts the flow of current through said second winding, said electro-magnetic field dissipates by inducing a current flow through said first winding and said diode and into said battery, thereby charging said battery.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said transformer includes a third winding which is inductively coupled to said first winding and connects a terminal of said battery to said control circuit, said first winding recovering energy from said third winding during said first mode of operation and returning said recovered energy to said battery.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, including a relay contact connected in series with said third winding, and including means for closing said relay contact during said first mode of operation and opening said relay contact during said second mode of operation.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said power source includes a source of AC power, a rectifier having input terminals connectible to said source of AC power and having a pair of output terminals, a relay contact, and means for opening and closing said relay contact during said first and second modes of operation, respectively, said electronic switch, said second winding and said relay contact being connected in series with each other between said output terminals of said rectifier.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said rectifier is a full wave rectifier.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said power source includes a source of AC power which outputs an AC signal, and wherein a switching command signal supplied by said control means to said electronic switch during said second mode of operation is a pulse train having a frequency substantially greater than the frequency of said AC signal.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6, including sensor means for measuring at least one input parameter, said control means being responsive to said sensor means for varying the widths of said pulses of said switching command signal for said electronic switch means in said second mode.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein a first said input parameter is the voltage of said AC signal and a second said input parameter is the voltage of said battery.
- 9. An apparatus for controlling an electric machine in a first mode of operation and for charging a battery in a second mode of operation, comprising:
- a control circuit connected to said battery and said electric machine, said control circuit including switch means having an electronic switch for selectively effecting electrical connection of said electric machine to said battery in said first mode of operation;
- control means for providing switching command signals to said switch means to cause said electronic switch to open and close in a cyclic manner; and
- means for charging said battery, including a diode, a transformer having inductively coupled first and second windings, and a power source; said diode, said first winding and said battery being connected in series in a first circuit loop; said diode being oriented to resist a discharge current flow from said battery through said first winding; said second winding, said electronic switch and said power source being connected in series in a second circuit loop; and said power source urging a current flow through said second winding and electronic switch in one direction during said second mode of operation, whereby when said electronic switch closes during said second mode of operation, said power source causes current to flow in said one direction through said second winding so that energy builds up in said second winding in the form of an electro-magnetic field, and when said electronic switch opens during said second mode of operation and interrupts the flow of current through said second winding, said electro-magnetic field dissipates by inducing a current flow through said first winding and said diode and into said battery, thereby charging said battery;
- wherein said electric machine is a AC machine, and wherein said switch means includes a plurality of further electronic switches, said first-mentioned and further electronic switches selectively connecting respective phase inputs of said AC machine to respective terminals of said battery in said first mode of operation.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9, including means for disabling each said further electronic switch during said second mode of operation.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 9, including a first snubber circuit connected to said electronic switch means, a plurality of further snubber circuits connected to respective said further electronic switches, and means cooperable with said further snubber circuits for disabling each said further snubber circuit during said second mode of operation.
