Claims
- 1. A system for generating a mixture of a first fluid and a second fluid, wherein the second fluid constitutes a predetermined percentage of the ultimate mixture, said system comprising:
a flow meter having an inlet in fluid communication with the first fluid, an outlet, and at least one rotatable element positioned between the inlet and the outlet, wherein said rotatable element rotates about an axis when the first fluid is directed through the inlet to the outlet, said element disposed in a housing defining top, bottom and side walls; a shaft coupled to the rotatable element; a pump including at least one rotatable element mounted within a second housing defining a top, bottom and side walls where said bottom wall is common to the top wall of the first housing, said pump disposed between an inlet for a second fluid and an outlet, where said rotatable element is operably coupled to said shaft such that a predetermined amount of the second fluid is pumped through the outlet of the pump when a predetermined amount of the first fluid is directed through the inlet of the flow meter to the outlet of the flow meter; and a shaft connected to the second gear of the flow meter and a second pump including a first and second gear mounted within a second housing between an inlet for a third fluid and an outlet, where said first gear of said second pump is coaxially coupled to said shaft such that a predetermined amount of the third fluid is pumped through the outlet of the pump when a predetermined amount of the first fluid is directed through the inlet of the flow meter to the outlet of the flow meter.
- 2. The system of claim 1 where the pump includes a first and second gear mounted in a comeshing relationship in said second housing.
- 3. The system of claim 2 where the teeth of the gears of said pump define a double helical configuration.
- 4. The system of claim 1 further including means to prime the pump.
- 5. The system of claim 1 where said pump comprises an impeller eccentrically disposed in said second housing.
- 6. The system of claim 5 where the second housing is pivotally disposed about said first housing such that the eccentricity of said impeller may be altered when said second housing is pivoted vis-a-vis said first housing.
- 7. The system of claim 1 where said pump outlet is concomitant with the outlet of the flow meter.
- 8. A dosing apparatus for mixing a first and other fluids in a predetermined, volumetric relationship comprising:
a flow measuring component having an inlet in fluid communication with the first fluid and an outlet, where said flow measuring component further includes means which rotate at a selected number of revolutions when a predetermined amount of fluid is directed from the inlet to the outlet; means to translate the rotation of said component; a second fluid disposed in fluid communication with the inlet of a fluid pump which includes a housing defining a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, where said pump is coupled to said translation means such that the rotation of the rotational means actuates said fluid pump so as to pump said second fluid through said pump; and where said pump outlet is disposed in fluid communication with the outlet of said flow measuring component.
- 9. The dosing apparatus of claim 8 where said pump includes a first and a second rotatable element situated in a comeshing relationship.
- 10. The dosing apparatus of claim 8 further including means to selectively divert a portion of the second solution pumped through the pump outlet back to a fluid reservoir.
- 11. The dosing apparatus of claim 8 where said flow measuring component and said fluid pump are integrally formed in a housing about a common drive shaft.
- 12. The dosing apparatus of claim 8 further including means to continuously remove deposits from the first and second rotatable element.
- 13. The dosing apparatus of claim 8 where said rotatable elements include helical gears.
- 14. The dosing apparatus of claim 8 further including a second pump comprising a first and second gear mounted between an inlet disposed in fluid communication which a third fluid and an outlet such that at least one of said first and second gears are also coupled to said translation means such that the rotation of the rotational means urges a predetermined amount of the third fluid from said inlet to said outlet.
- 15. The dosing apparatus of claim 14 where the outlet of said second pump is coupled in fluid communication with the outlet of the flow measuring component through a valve to allow for selective diversion of at least a portion of the fluid pumped through said outlet to said reservoir.
- 16. The dosing apparatus of claim 8 where the first pump includes a piston disposed in a housing between the outlet and the inlet and where the translation means is coupled to said piston such that rotation of said rotational means actuates reciprocation of said piston in said housing so as to pump said second fluid through said fluid outlet.
- 17. The dosing apparatus of claim 8 where said pump includes an impeller eccentrically disposed in said housing.
- 18. The dosing apparatus of claim 17 where the eccentricity of said impeller may be modified.
- 19. The dosing apparatus of claim 14 where the second pump includes double helical rotors.
- 20. The dosing apparatus of claim 14 further including means to pressurize the second pump.
- 21. An apparatus to inject selected quantities of a second fluid into a fluid stream comprising:
a metering apparatus to monitor the flow of a first fluid introduced through an inlet to an outlet where said apparatus generates a selective rotation of a shaft based on the quantity of the first fluid passing through said metering apparatus; a fluid pump operably coupled to said shaft and positioned between a source of a second fluid and an outlet of the pump where a predetermined amount of said second fluid is directed through the outlet based on the flow of fluid through the metering apparatus; and where the first pump comprises a piston disposed in a housing between a first and a second position where such piston is coupled to a crank which in turn is operably coupled to said shaft such that rotation of said shaft induces reciprocation of said piston in said housing so as to pump fluid from said inlet to said outlet.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 21 where said second fluid is contained within a reservoir which is disposed in fluid communication with an inlet to said pump.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 21 wherein the fluid pump includes a pair of counter rotating helical gears.
- 24. A method for establishing a mixture of a first fluid and a second fluid where the first fluid constitutes a volumetric portion of the mixture, the method comprising:
(a) providing a flow meter having a rotatable member in fluid communication with the first fluid and disposed between an inlet and an outlet; (b) providing a pump having at least one rotatable member disposed between an inlet and an outlet where said inlet is disposed in fluid communication with a second source of fluid; (c) coupling the rotatable member of the flow meter to the rotatable member of the pump; (d) directing the first fluid through the inlet and outlet to induce rotation in the flow meter a predetermined amount for each unit of the first fluid to thereby cause the rotatable member of the pump to rotate and thereby pump a predetermined amount of said second fluid from said inlet to an outlet; (e) mixing the fluid that has been directed through the pump; and (f) providing a second pump having at least one rotatable member disposed between an inlet and an outlet where said inlet is disposed in fluid communication with a third source of fluid where said rotatable member of said second pump is operably coupled to the rotatable member of the flow meter such that fluid flow through said meter induces fluid flow through said second pump.
