The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Referring initially to
A fixed roller assembly 8 is provided on the unit frame 2. The fixed roller assembly 8 includes an elongated base member 9 which extends between the tracks 3, typically at one end of each track 3. The base member 9 may be attached to the tracks 3 using, for example, respective base member fasteners 10 each of which is secured by a nut 14, as shown in
An adjustable roller assembly 18 is provided on the frame 2 and is positionally adjustable with respect to the fixed roller assembly 8. The adjustable roller assembly 18 includes an elongated base member 19. The base member 19 may be attached to the tracks 3 using, for example, base member fasteners 20 each of which extends through a fastener opening (not shown) provided in a corresponding end of the base member 19 and extends through a selected one of the spaced-apart roller adjustment openings 4 provided in the corresponding track 3. As shown in
A pair of roller mount flanges 21 extends from the base member 19, in spaced-apart relationship with respect to each other. An adjustable roller plate 22 is provided on each roller mount flange 21. Each adjustable roller plate 22 is angularly adjustable with respect to the corresponding roller mount flange 21 according to the knowledge of those skilled in the art. For example, a roller plate fastener 28 may extend through registering fastener openings (not shown) provided in the roller mount flange 21 and adjustable roller plate 22, respectively. A nut 29 is threaded on the roller plate fastener 28. The nut 29 may be a wing nut or other type of manually-rotatable nut to facilitate expeditious angular adjustment of each adjustable roller plate 22 with respect to the corresponding roller mount flange 21. An adjustable roller 23 is rotatably mounted between the adjustable roller plates 22. For example, roller pins 24 typically extend from respective ends of the adjustable roller 23 and extend through pin openings (not shown) provided in the respective adjustable roller plates 22. Because the adjustable roller plates 22 are angularly adjustable with respect to the respective roller mount flanges 21, the adjustable roller 23 is pivotally adjustable with respect to the base member 19.

A punch roller assembly 38 is provided in the punching unit enclosure 34. The punch roller assembly 38 typically includes an entry roller 39, a first tensioning roller 40 spaced-apart with respect to the entry roller 39, a pair of adjacent guide rollers 41 spaced-apart with respect to the first tensioning roller 40, a punch roller 42 and an adjacent die roller 43 spaced-apart with respect to the guide rollers 41, a first guide roller 44 spaced-apart with respect to the punch roller 42 and the die roller 43, a second guide roller 45 spaced-apart with respect to the first guide roller 44, a second tensioning roller 46 adjacent to the second guide roller 45, a pressure roller 47 adjacent to the second tensioning roller 46 and a pair of adjacent exit rollers 48 spaced-apart with respect to the tensioning roller 46.
In typical operation of the paper processing system 32, a paper web 54 is typically subjected to various processing steps prior to being routed through the punching unit 33. The cover 36 is typically closed on the punching unit enclosure 34 during processing of the paper web 54. The paper web 54 enters the enclosure 34 and extends around the entry roller 39, the first tensioning roller 40 and between the guide rollers 41, respectively. In applications in which it is desired to punch holes and cut corners in sheets of paper (not shown) which will eventually be cut from the paper web 54, the paper web 54 is advanced from between the guide rollers 41, between the punch roller 42 and the die roller 43 and against the first guide roller 44 and the second guide roller 45, respectively, as indicated in phantom lines by the punching path 54a of the paper web 54. From the second guide roller 45, the paper web 54 is advanced between the second tensioning roller 46 and the pressure roller 47 and finally, between the exit rollers 48, from which the paper web 54 exits the punching unit enclosure 34. Throughout travel of the paper web 54 through the punch roller assembly 38, the first tensioning roller 40 and second tensioning roller 46 maintain tension on the paper web 54 for proper processing. Furthermore, an electronic indexing eye (not shown) provided in the punching unit enclosure 34 maintains the paper web 54 in proper position as it traverses the various rollers of the punch roller assembly 38.
In applications in which it is not desired to punch holes and cut corners in sheets of paper which will eventually be cut from the paper web 54, the punch roller bypass unit 1 is placed in the punching unit enclosure 34, generally above or adjacent to the punch roller 42. The unit frame 2 of the punch roller bypass unit 1 are typically attached to the frame elements 35 which extend on respective sides of the punch roller 42, using attachment brackets (not shown), attachment clips (not shown) or other techniques which are known to those skilled in the art. The paper web 54 is routed from between the guide rollers 41; around the adjustable roller 23 and the fixed roller 12, respectively, of the punch roller bypass unit 1; and then around the second guide roller 45 and between the second tensioning roller 46 and pressure roller 47, respectively, and finally, between the exit rollers 48 and out the punching unit enclosure 34.
It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the position of the adjustable roller assembly 18 with respect to the fixed roller assembly 8 can be selectively adjusted, as deemed necessary, by positionally adjusting the base member 19 of the adjustable roller assembly 18 along the tracks 3 of the unit frame 2, as indicated by the arrow 6 in
During operation of the punching unit 33, the paper web 54 bypasses the punch roller 42 and the die roller 43, as indicated in solid lines by the bypass path 54b in
Although this invention has been described with respect to certain exemplary embodiments, it is to be understood that the specific embodiments are for purposes of illustration and not limitation, as other variations will occur to those of ordinary skill in the art.
