Claims
- 1. Apparatus for continuous production of electrode-grade carbon from green coke having a substantial sulfur content comprising a rigid generally circular frame having an outer generally circular frame member and an inner generally circular frame member; a circular grate having a portion mounted in fixed relation on said frame between said outer and inner generally circular frame members, said grate having a gas permeable hearth for carrying a bed of said coke with a depth of 1 to 2 meters, means for conveying green coke to said bed to provide a bed of said depth, means for supporting said circular frame for rotational movement about a vertical axis; stationary gas enclosing means above said grate and below said grate having wall means for providing in succession a series of separate treating zones including a preheat zone, a heating and calcining zone, a desulfurizing zone, and a cooling zone; means for passing heated gases through the bed of green coke on said grate to preheat the bed in said preheat zone; combustion heating means for heating the preheated coke in said heating and calcining zone to a calcining temperature of about at least 600.degree. C. and for reducing the content of volatile matter at least 90 percent; means for passing the hot flue gas from said heating and calcining zone through the coke bed to capture entrained fine particles in the flue gas; means for passing a reducing gas through the coke bed on the grate in said desulfurizing zone and for maintaining the coke at a temperature of at least 550.degree. C. to effect desulfurization of the coke under reducing conditions; and means for passing a cooling fluid through the bed of desulfurized coke in said cooling zone to recover heat before the coke is removed from the grate.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 in which gas sealing means are provided between said gas enclosing means and each side of the grate and transverse seals are provided between adjacent zones to limit passage of gases between said zones.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 in which a hydrocarbon reforming zone is provided between said desulfurizing zone and said cooling zone, means are provided for passing a hydrocarbon gas and steam through the bed in said reforming zone to form a water gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas, and means are provided for supplying said water gas to said desulfurizing zone.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 in which means are provided for supplying said water gas to said heating and calcining zone.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 3 in which water or steam is passed through the coke bed in said cooling zone to produce superheated steam and conduit means are provided for passing said superheated steam through the coke bed in said hydrocarbon reforming zone.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 3 in which means are provided for receiving the water gas from said reforming zone and the gases leaving said desulfurizing zone, which contain hydrogen sulfide, and for cooling said gases, means are provided for effecting removal of hydrogen sulfide from the gases, and means are provided for preheating the gases after such removal and for directing such gases to said heating and calcining zone and to said desulfurizing zone.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 in which supply tubes discharge air and combustible gas to the heating and calcining zone at the bottom of the coke bed to avoid overheating of the hearth.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 in which radiant combustion heating means are provided above and spaced from the moving bed of coke in said heating and calcining zone and means are provided for supplying air to said radiant heating means to burn combustible gases rising from the bed.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 in which burner means are provided above the coke bed in said preheat zone and means are provided for supplying air to said burner means to complete combustion of unburned gases received from said calcining zone.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1 in which radiant combustion heating means are provided above and spaced from the moving bed of calcined coke in said desulfurizing zone, and means are provided for supplying air to said last-named heating means to burn combustible gases rising from the bed.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1 in which said hearth comprises tiltable segments mounted on perforated support tubes and means are provided for supplying air and combustible gas to said tubes as they pass through said heating and calcining zone and said desulfurizing zone.
- 12. Apparatus for continuous production of electrode-grade carbon from green coke having a substantial sulfur content comprising a rigid generally circular frame having an outer generally circular frame member and an inner generally circular frame member; a circular grate having a portion mounted in fixed relation on said frame between said outer and inner generally circular frame members, said grate having a gas permeable bottom adapted to carry a bed of said coke with a depth of at least 1 meter, means for supporting said circular frame for rotational movement about a vertical axis; stationary gas enclosing means for providing in succession a series of separate treating zones including a preheat zone, a heating and calcining zone, a desulfurizing zone, and a cooling zone; gas sealing means between said gas enclosing means and each side of said grate comprising, at each side of said grate between said grate and the adjacent circular frame member, a trough fixed with relation to one of said adjacent members and said gas enclosing means, which trough is adapted to contain a liquid, and shield means extending from the other of said adjacent frame members and said gas enclosing means into said liquid to form an essentially gas impervious seal; means extending transversely between adjacent zones for limiting passage of gases between said zones along said grate; means for passing heated gases through the bed of green coke on said grate to preheat the bed in said preheat zone; combustion heating means for heating the coke in said heating and calcining zone to a calcining temperature of at least 600.degree. C. sufficient to reduce the content of volatile matter at least 90 percent, whereby the volatile content of the coke is reduced to less than one percent by weight before it enters said desulfurizing zone; combustion heating means for heating the calcined coke in said desulfurizing zone to a temperature of at least 550.degree. C., means for passing a combustible reducing gas through the coke bed on the grate in said desulfurizing zone to effect desulfurization of the coke under reducing conditions; and means for passing a cooling fluid through the bed of desulfurized coke on the grate in said cooling zone to recover heat from said coke before it is removed from the grate.
- 13. Apparatus for continuous production of electrode-grade carbon from green coke having a substantial sulfur content comprising a rigid generally circular frame member and an inner generally circular frame member; a circular grate having a portion mounted in fixed relation on said frame between said outer and inner generally circular frame members, said grate having a gas permeable hearth for carrying a bed of said coke with a depth 1 to 2 meters, means for conveying green coke to said bed to provide a bed of said depth, means for supporting said circular frame for rotational movement about a vertical axis; stationary gas enclosing means above said grate and below said grate having wall means for providing in succession a series of separate treating zones including a preheat zone, a heating and calcining zone, a desulfurizing zone, and a cooling zone; means for passing heated off gases from at least one of said heating and calcining, desulfurizing and cooling zones through the bed of green coke on said grate to preheat the bed in said preheat zone; combustion heating means for heating the preheated coke in said heating and calcining zone to a calcining temperature of at least 600.degree. C. and for reducing the content of volatile matter at least 90 percent; means for passing the hot flue gas from said heating and calcining zone through the coke bed to capture entrained fine particles in the flue gas; means for passing a reducing gas through the coke bed on the grate in said desulfurizing zone and for maintaining the coke at a temperature of at least 550.degree. C. to effect desulfurization of the coke under reducing conditions; and means for passing a cooling fluid through the bed of desulfurized coke in said cooling zone to recover heat before the coke is removed from the grate.
- 14. Apparatus for continuous production of electrode-grade carbon from green coke having a substantial sulfur content comprising a rigid generally circular frame having an outer generally circular frame member and an inner generally circular frame member; a circular grate having a portion mounted in fixed relation on said frame between said outer and inner generally circular frame members, said grate having a gas permeable bottom adapted to carry a bed of said coke with a depth of at least 1 meter, means for supporting said circular frame for rotation movement about a vertical axis; stationary gas enclosing means for providing in succession a series of separate treating zones including a preheat zone, a heating and calcining zone, a desulfurizing zone, and a cooling zone; gas sealing means between said gas enclosing means and each side of said grate comprising, at each side of said grate between said grate and the adjacent circular frame member, a trough fixed with relation to one of said adjacent members and said gas enclosing means, which trough is adapted to contain a liquid, and shield means extending from the other of said adjacent frame members and said gas enclosing means into said liquid to form an essentially gas impervious seal; means extending transversely between adjacent zones for limiting passage of gases between said zones along said grate; means for passing heated off gases from at least one of said zones through the bed of green coke on said grate to preheat the bed in said preheat zone; combustion heating means for heating the coke in said heating and calcining zone to a calcining temperature of at least 600.degree. C. sufficient to reduce the content of volatile matter at least 90 percent, whereby the volatile content of the coke is reduced to less than one percent by weight before it enters said desulfurizing zone; combustion heating means for heating the calcined coke in said desulfurizing zone to a temperature of at least 550.degree. C.; means for passing a combustible reducing gas through the coke bed on the grate in said desulfurizing zone to effect desulfurization of the coke under reducing conditions; and means for passing a cooling fluid through the bed of desulfurized coke on the grate in said cooling zone to recover heat from said coke before it is removed from the grate.
