Claims
- 1. A process for improving the utility of geothermal steam at superatmospheric pressure, said steam containing relatively minor amounts of one or more gaseous impurities consisting of substances comprising boron, arsenic and/or mercury, and also containing at least one of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, which process comprises:
- (a) providing an aqueous liquid medium containing one or more chemical reagents selected from the class of alkaline earth metal compounds capable of interacting with said gaseous impurities to form relatively insoluble or slightly soluble products thereof in the presence of said steam;
- (b) contacting at elevated temperature and superatmospheric pressure a flow of said geothermal steam with said aqueous liquid medium and transferring at least a part of one or more of said gaseous impurities from said steam into said aqueous liquid and forming said products therein;
- (c) delivering from said contacting the resulting flow of steam at elevated temperature and superatmospheric pressure having substantially all of said hydrogen sulfide and/or carbon dioxide therein but depleted in said transferred impurities; and
- (d) discharging from said contacting aqueous liquid having an acid pH and containing dispersed therein said products of said transferred impurities.
- 2. A process according to claim 1, wherein said contacting of said steam in step (b) is with a cocurrent flow of said aqueous liquid medium.
- 3. A process according to claim 1, wherein said contacting of said steam in step (b) is with a countercurrent flow of said aqueous liquid medium.
- 4. A process according to claim 1, wherein said one or more impurities includes a gaseous substance comprising boron.
- 5. A process according to claim 1, wherein said one or more impurities includes a gaseous substance comprising arsenic.
- 6. A process according to claim 1, wherein said one or more impurities includes a gaseous substance comprising mercury.
- 7. A process according to claim 1, wherein aqueous liquid discharged in step (d) is recycled to said contacting in step (b).
- 8. A process according to claim 1, wherein said chemical reagents are from the class consisting of alkaline earth metal carbonate and sulfide compounds.
- 9. A process according to claim 8, wherein at least one said alkaline earth metal is calcium.
- 10. A process according to claim 8, wherein at least one said alkaline earth metal is magnesium.
- 11. A process according to claim 8, wherein the resulting flow of steam in step (c) contains hydrogen sulfide, which further comprises:
- (e) delivering said resulting flow of steam to a process for removing hydrogen sulfide therefrom at substantially said elevated temperature and superatmospheric pressure.
- 12. A process according to claim 1, wherein said chemical reagents are present in solution and in suspension.
- 13. A process according to claim 1, which further comprises:
- (e) separating from the aqueous liquid discharged in step (d) at least a part of said products therein, and
- (f) recycling to step (a) aqueous liquid from which said products have been separated in step (e).
- 14. A process according to claim 1, which further comprises:
- (e) providing the constituents for said aqueous liquid medium in step (a) so as to maintain the aqueous liquid discharged in step (d) in the pH range 2.5 to 7.0.
- 15. A process according to claim 8, which further comprises:
- (f) providing an amount of basic alkaline earth metal compound to the aqueous liquid medium in step (a) for forming at least a part of said chemical reagents in situ in step (b), said amount being essentially that required to form said relatively insoluble or slightly soluble products.
- 16. A process according to claim 15, wherein said basic compound is selected from the class consisting of oxides, hydroxides and carbonates.
- 17. A process according to claim 1, which further comprises:
- (e) condensing steam delivered in step (c) depleted in said transferred impurities to produce liquid water, and
- (f) removing said water produced in step (e).
