Claims
- 1. A process for making a compound having the formula: ##STR11## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently a lower alkyl and R.sub.3 is a lower alkyl, benzyl or phenyl; which comprises the step of reacting the starting compound having the formula: ##STR12## with R.sub.3 COA wherein A is halo, in the presence of a base and at least about 0.25 molar equivalents of MgX.sub.2, wherein X is Cl, Br or I, for each mole of starting compound and the phenyl ring of the starting compound is unsubstituted or substituted with one to three substituents which do not interfere with the process.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein R.sub.3 is lower alkyl.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein the process is carried out in the presence of at least about 0.5 to about 1 molar equivalent of MgX.sub.2 for each mole of starting compound.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein the base is an alkylamine.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein X is Cl.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein the base is triethylamine.
- 7. A process for making a compound having the formula: ##STR13## wherein R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are each independently a lower alkyl substituent, R.sub.6 is a halo substituent; R.sub.7 is a lower alkyl substituent and n is 1 to 2; which comprises the step of reacting the starting compound having the formula: ##STR14## with R.sub.7 COCl in the presence of a base and at least about 0.25 molar equivalent of MgCl.sub.2 for each mole of starting compound.
- 8. The process of claim 7 wherein the process is carried out in the presence of at least about 0.5 to about 1 molar equivalent of MgCl.sub.2 for each mole of starting compound.
- 9. The process of claim 8 wherein the base is an alkylamine.
- 10. The process of claim 9 wherein the base is triethylamine.
