Claims
- 1. A voltage controlled oscillator comprising:
a first oscillator circuit portion including at least one first inductor (“tail inductor”); and, a second oscillator circuit portion including at least one second inductor (“tail inductor”), wherein the at least one first inductor and the at least one second inductor are electromagnetically coupled to each other.
- 2. The voltage controlled oscillator of claim 1, wherein the first oscillator circuit portion includes at least one inductor and at least one capacitor. The latter may be a variable capacitance capacitor (varactor).
- 3. The voltage controlled oscillator of claim 1, wherein the second oscillator circuit portion includes at least one inductor and at least one capacitor. The latter may be a variable capacitance capacitor (varactor).
- 4. The voltage controlled oscillator of claim 1, wherein the first oscillator circuit portion includes at least two transistors.
- 5. The voltage controlled oscillator of claim 1, wherein the second oscillator circuit portion includes at least two transistors.
- 6. The voltage controlled oscillator of claim 4, wherein the first end of the at least one first inductor is coupled to a source terminal of each of the least two transistors.
- 7. The voltage controlled oscillator of claim 5, wherein a first end of the at least second inductor is coupled to a source terminal of each of the least two transistors.
- 8. The voltage controlled oscillator of claim 6, wherein a second end of the at least one first inductor is coupled directly to ground or coupled to ground by means of a bypass capacitor.
- 9. The voltage controlled oscillator of claim 7, wherein a second end of the at least one second inductor is coupled directly to ground or coupled to ground by means of a bypass capacitor.
- 10. A method for generating quadrature output signals and reducing phase noise in a voltage controlled oscillator comprising the steps of:
disposing the first and second oscillator circuit portions in proximity to each other, each of said oscillator circuits including a tail inductor; and, electromagnetically coupling the tail inductors of the first and second oscillator circuit portions.
- 11. The voltage controlled oscillator of claim 10, wherein the inductance values of the two tail inductors and the value of the electromagnetic coupling factor between the two tail inductors are dimensioned such that the first ends of the tail inductors of claims 6 and 7 resonate in anti-phase at a frequency equal to the second harmonic of the oscillation frequency of the voltage controlled oscillator, such that the outputs of the voltage controlled oscillator differ in phase by 90 degrees.
