This invention relates to a quick release system for anchoring a kayak in shallow water.
Kayak fishing is a popular sport, and one of its greatest advantages is the kayak's ability to take the fisherman into water far shallower than any other fishing vessels. Fishing these shallow waters, quickness and stealth are essential for not scaring off the fish. This quick release anchoring system was invented with those needs in mind allowing the kayak fisherman to instantly anchor the kayak to the bottom of a body of shallow water while maintaining visual contact with the fish and not alerting the fish in the surrounding area to one's presence. Additionally, the system is designed for quick and easy retrieval to prevent capsizing or difficult removal.
The apparatus and system provide the ability to instantly anchor the kayak by releasing an attachment mechanism to quickly drop the mounted stake into the bottom of a body of shallow water. It then allows for immediate, easy retrieval of the stake by pulling the attachment mechanism and reconnecting it to the kayak to continue paddling
The apparatus includes a receiver sheath affixed to the kayak body and a stake mounted inside of this receiver allowed to move up and down freely. The system can be mounted to the interior of the vessel using a scupper hole or to the exterior of the vessel using a bracket attachment. A tether line is attached to the stake that allows for securing the stake in the up position while paddling as well as quickly releasing the stake for immediate anchoring. The stake, the attachment of the tether line, and the receiver mount are all specifically designed to allow for pulling of the tether line for easy, retrieval.

a is a side view that shows the stake in the “up”, or paddling position.
b is a side view that shows the stake in the “down”, or anchored position. All three figures show the device that keeps the retrieval mechanism within reach of the paddler's hand.
