Claims
- 1. A clamping mechanism, comprising:
a housing having a first jaw, a channel there through, and a gear-tooth rack lining said channel; a slidable portion having a second jaw carried on a slidable beam inserted into the chamber of said housing; a toothed pawl having a threaded through-bore, said pawl being insertable into the channel of said housing and selectively engageable with the gear-tooth rack lining said channel; a mandril having a threaded end for screw-insertion into the through-bore of said pawl, said mandril being rotatably anchored to said housing such that rotation of said mandril when said pawl is engaged moves said slidable portion and second jaw relative to said housing and first jaw, but disengagement of said pawl from the gear-tooth rack lining said channel allows said slidable portion and second jaw to be slidably inserted and withdrawn from said housing without turning said mandril.
- 2. The clamping mechanism according to claim 1, wherein the beam of said slidable portion is hollow and the mandril and pawl extend into the hollow of said beam.
- 3. The clamping mechanism according to claim 3, further comprising a bias spring for biasing said pawl into engagement with the teeth of sad rack.
- 4. The clamping mechanism according to claim 3, wherein said bias spring is anchored in said pawl.
- 5. The clamping mechanism according to claim 1, further comprising a thumb-switch mounted on said slidable portion to allow said slidable portion and rack gear to be disengaged from said pawl, thereby allowing a user to shift the slidable portion relative to the stationery portion.
- 6. The clamping mechanism according to claim 3, further comprising a thumb-switch mounted on said slidable portion to allow said slidable portion and rack gear to be disengaged from said pawl against the bias of said bias spring, thereby allowing a user to shift the slidable portion relative to the stationery portion.
- 7. The clamping mechanism according to claim 1, further comprising a bearing formed as a collar with flanking pivot pins, said bearing being pivotally mounted in said slidable portion for rotatably supporting said mandril.
- 8. The clamping mechanism according to claim 7, further comprising opposing bushings in the slidable portion for pivotally supporting said bearing by its pivot pins.
- 9. The clamping mechanism according to claim 1, wherein said mandril further comprises a cylindrical barrel portion having a screw-threaded end, said barrel portion leading to a hub.
- 10. The clamping mechanism according to claim 9, wherein said hub has an through-bore therein for insertion of a turning handle.
- 11. The clamping mechanism according to claim 2, wherein the beam of said slidable portion is formed with a opposing side walls and a top wall.
