Claims
- 1. An apparatus for heating material which is comprised of:
- a rotary cylindrical drum, having first, second and third concentric cylinders of decreasing diameters;
- means to introduce said material into said drum, such that said material is introduced into one of said first and third cylinders;
- a heating means interacting with said second cylinder to create an atmosphere in said first and third cylinders which will heat said materials required;
- transporting means for transporting said material along a length of said first and third cylinders;
- a transfer means to transfer said material from said one to the other of said first and said third cylinders; and
- an exhaust means to substantially ventilate gases evolved from said material away from said material as said gases are evolved.
- 2. An apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a suspension means which maintains said cylinders in a specified concentricity.
- 3. An apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said suspension means is comprised of connector rods and pivot plates.
- 4. An apparatus according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said material is soil which is to be remediated in said apparatus.
- 5. An apparatus according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said one cylinder is said first cylinder and said atmosphere reaches up to 250.degree. F. in said first cylinder and reaches up to 1,400.degree. F. in said third cylinder.
- 6. An apparatus according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said transporting means are helices located interiorly of said first and third cylinders.
- 7. An apparatus according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said transfer means is comprised of a rotary elevator.
- 8. An apparatus according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said transfer means is located substantially within said first, second and third cylinders.
- 9. An apparatus according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said exhaust means comprises a vent means to substantially vent gases driven off from said material back to said heating means in order to substantially burn off compounds in said gases.
- 10. An apparatus according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said material introduction means is adjustable.
- 11. A method of heating material comprises the steps of:
- rotating a cylindrical drum having first, second and third concentric cylinders of decreasing diameters;
- conveying said material into one of said first and third cylinders;
- radiantly heating said one of said first and third cylinders;
- radiantly heating said other of said first and third cylinders to further heat said material;
- traversing said material along the length of said other of said cylinders; and
- discharging said material.
- 12. A method according to claim 11, further comprising the step of exhausting gases evolved from said material from said one of said cylinders.
- 13. An apparatus according to claim 11 or claim 12, wherein said conveying of said material is through a flange means and idler wheels attached to said flange means.
- 14. A method according to claim 11 or claim 12, wherein the material to be treated is soil so as to volatize water and organic compounds and wherein said one of said cylinders is the first cylinder and further comprising the steps of exhausting said volatilized organic compounds from said third cylinder.
- 15. A method according to claim 11 further comprising the steps of venting said volatilized organic compounds into said second cylinder in order to burn off said organic compounds.
- 16. A method according to claims 11 or 12, further comprising the step of adjusting the time of said conveying of said material to alter the time said material is traversing the length of said first cylinder and subject to the heat thereof.
- 17. An apparatus for remediating material which is comprised of:
- a rotary cylindrical drum, having first, second and third concentric cylinders of decreasing diameters;
- means to introduce said material into said drum, such that said material is introduced into said first cylinder;
- a radiant heating means interacting with said second cylinder to create an atmosphere in said first and third cylinders which will substantially volatilize compounds contained in said material;
- transporting means for transporting said material along a length of said first and third cylinders;
- a transfer means to transfer said material from said first cylinder to said third cylinder; and
- an exhaust means to substantially ventilate said compounds away from said material as said compounds are volatilized.
- 18. An apparatus, according to claim 17, further comprising a suspension means which maintains said cylinders in a specified concentricity.
- 19. An apparatus, according to claim 18, wherein said suspension means is comprised of connector rods and pivot plates.
- 20. An apparatus according to claim 17 or 18, wherein said material is soil.
- 21. An apparatus according to claim 17 or 18, wherein said atmosphere reaches up to 250.degree. F. in said first cylinder and reaches up to 1400.degree. F. in said third cylinder.
- 22. An apparatus according to claim 17 or 18, wherein said transporting means are helices located on said first and third cylinders.
- 23. An apparatus according to claim 17 or 18, wherein said transfer means is comprised of a rotary elevator.
- 24. An apparatus according to claim 17 or 18, wherein said transfer means is located substantially within said first, second and third cylinders.
- 25. An apparatus according to claim 17 or 18, wherein said exhaust means comprises a vent means to substantially vent said compounds back to said heating means in order to substantially burn off said compounds.
- 26. An apparatus according to claim 17 or 18, wherein said material introduction means is adjustable.
- 27. A method of remediating material in order to substantially volatilize compounds contained within said material comprised in the steps of:
- rotating a cylindrical drum having first, second and third concentric cylinders of decreasing diameters;
- conveying said material into said first cylinder;
- radiantly heating said first cylinder to create an atmosphere that will substantially volatilize water and some of the organic compounds contained within said material;
- traversing said material along the length of said first cylinder;
- transporting said material to said third cylinder;
- radiantly heating said third cylinder to create an atmosphere that will volatilize substantially all the organic compounds contained in said material;
- traversing said material along the length of said third cylinder; and
- discharging said material.
- 28. A method according to claim 27, further comprising the step of exhausting said volatilized water and organic compounds from said first cylinder.
- 29. An apparatus, according to claim 27 or 28, wherein said conveying of said material is through a flange means and idler wheels attached to said flange means.
- 30. A method according to claim 27 or 28, further comprising the steps of exhausting said volatilized organic compounds from said third cylinder.
- 31. A method according to claim 27 or 28, further comprising the steps of venting said volatilized organic compounds into said second cylinder in order to burn off said organic compounds.
- 32. A method according to claim 27 or 28, further comprising the step of adjusting said conveying of said material to alter the time said material is traversing the length of said first cylinder.
