Claims
- 1. An optical fiber ribbon comprising a plurality of distinguishably colored optical fibers oriented in a generally planar, parallel arrangement and bonded in position by a matrix, said matrix having an adhesion level to said color-coded fibers that is within the range from about 0.02 to about 0.2 pounds per linear inch as measured on a one inch wide sample by a T-peel test at 23° C. with a crosshead speed to 10 mm/min to prevent separation during cabling but not so adherent as to remove the color from said fibers when said matrix is stripped for splicing from said ribbon.
- 2. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1 wherein said matrix is resistant to swelling when exposed to ethanol.
- 3. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1 wherein said matrix is resistant to swelling when exposed to trichloroethane.
- 4. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1 wherein said matrix is resistant to swelling when exposed to both ethanol and trichloroethane.
- 5. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1 wherein said matrix is sufficiently resistant to swelling when exposed to ethanol that structural integrity of said ribbon is not compromised.
- 6. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1 wherein said matrix is sufficiently resistant to swelling when exposed to trichloroethan e that structural integrity of said ribbon is not compromised.
- 7. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1 wherein said matrix was cured with ultraviolet light or an electron beam.
- 8. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1 wherein said matrix contains a silicone polyether urethane acrylate.
- 9. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1 wherein said optical fiber has a core and a cladding layer over said core.
- 10. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 9 wherein said optical fiber further comprises a secondary coating over said cladding layer.
- 11. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1 wherein the distinguishable color has been applied to said optical fiber with an ink-containing coating.
- 12. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 11 wherein said ink-containing coating is vinylic.
- 13. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1 wherein said matrix has a solvent absorption within the range from 14.2% to 28.8%.
- 14. An optical fiber according to claim 1 wherein said matrix has a crosslink density adequate to resist delamination when exposed to ethanol or isopropyl alcohol.
- 15. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 14 wherein said matrix has been made with (a) a polyerher-based urethane acrylate and (b) a monomer reactive towards said polyether-based urethane acrylate and having two or three (meth)acrylate moieties wherein said monomer is present in an amount sufficienet to provide, when cured, an adequate crosslink density, modulus, and solvent resistance for an optical fiber matrix material.
- 16. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 14 wherein the crosslink density of said matrix is controlled to achieve a cross-link density sufficient to provide a desired resistance to swelling upon exposure to ethanol while having sufficient adhesion to said color-coated optical fibers to prevent separation during cabling but not so adherent as to remove the color from said fibers when said matrix is stripped for splicing from said ribbon.
- 17. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 16 wherein the crosslink density of said matrix is controlled to achieve an ethanol absorption within the range of 14.2 to 28.8%.
- 18. An optical fiber ribbon according to claim 1 wherein said matrix has been cured by exposure to ultraviolet radiation at a cure speed, as measured in a dose versus modulus curve, of less than 1.0 J/cm2.
- 19. An optical fiber according to claim 18 wherein said matrix has been cured at a cure speed of less than 0.5 J/cm2.
- 20. An optical fiber ribbon comprising a plurality of distinguishably colored optical fibers oriented in a generally planar, parallel arrangement and bonded in position by a matrix, said matrix having sufficient cross-link density to provide a desired resistance to swelling upon exposure to ethanol, trichloromethane, or a combination of ethanol and trichloromethane while having sufficient adhesion to said color-coated optical fibers to prevent separation during cabling but not so adherent as to remove the color from said fibers when said matrix is stripped for splicing from said ribbon.
- 21. An optical fiber ribbon comprising a plurality of distinguishably colored optical fibers oriented in a generally planar, parallel arrangement and bonded in position by a matrix, said matrix having an ethanol absorption within the range from 14.2% to 28.8% and exhibiting sufficient adhesion to said color-coated optical fibers to prevent separation during cabling but not so adherent as to remove the color from said fibers when said matrix is stripped for splicing from said ribbon.
