Claims
- 1. A curable coating composition for a glass substrate, said composition comprising at least one component selected from the group consisting of curable polymers, oligomers and monomers, and said composition further comprising a tetrasubstituted compound having the formula:

The composition according to claim 1, wherein the hydrolyzable groups X1, X2, X3and X4 are independently halogen, formyloxy, acetoxy, propionyloxy, valeryloxy, stearoyloxy, benzoyloxy, naphthoyloxy, toluyloxy, maleoyloxy, alkoxy, alkyl-thio, vinyloxy, allyloxy, vinyletheroxy, methacryloxy or acryloxy.
- 3. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the hydrolyzable groups X1, X2, X3 and X4 are independently an alkoxy group or a group containing ethylenic unsaturation.
- 4. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the tetrasubstituted compound is present in an amount in the range of about 0.1% to about 50% by weight of the entire composition.
- 5. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the tetrasubstituted compound is present in an amount in the range of about 0.1% to about 30% by weight of the entire composition.
- 6. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the tetrasubstituted compound is present in an amount in the range of about 0.5% to about 10% by weight of the entire composition.
- 7. The composition according to claim 3, wherein the alkoxy group is a C1 to C6 alkoxy group.
- 8. The composition according to claim 7, wherein the alkoxy groups are methoxy or ethoxy groups.
- 9. The composition according to claim 1, wherein A is Si.
- 10. A curable coating composition for a glass substrate, said composition comprising at least one component selected from the group consisting of curable polymers, oligomers and monomers, and said composition having an adhesion retention of at least 80%.
- 11. A composition according to claim 10, having an adhesion retention of at least 95%.
- 12. An outer primary coating composition or matrix composition that comprises an acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer.
- 13. An outer primary coating composition or matrix composition according to claim 12, wherein the composition, when cured, has a Tg above 0° C. and a modulus in the range of about 10.0 to about 3,000 Mpa.
- 14. An outer primary coating composition or matrix composition according to claim 12, wherein the acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer is present in an amount of about 0.1 to about 10% by weight of the entire composition.
- 15. An outer primary coating composition or matrix composition according to claim 12, wherein the acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer is an ethylenically unsaturated phosphoric acid.
- 16. An outer primary coating composition or matrix composition according to claim 12, wherein the acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer is a phosphoric acid monoacrylate or a 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid.
- 17. A glass substrate coated with at least one composition in accordance with claim 1.
- 18. A glass substrate coated with at least one composition in accordance with claim 12.
- 19. A glass substrate according to claim 17, wherein the tetrasubstituted compound in the coating composition contains an element A, that is also present in the composition of the glass substrate.
- 20. A glass substrate according to claim 19, wherein the glass substrate is a silica-based optical fiber.
- 21. A coated optical fiber having more than one layer of coating, the optical fiber having a dynamic fatigue value nd of at least 24.
- 22. A coated optical fiber coated with more than one layer of coating, wherein at least the innermost layer comprises a tetrasubstituted compound according to claim 1, and wherein at least one of the other layers comprises an acid functional monomer.
- 23. A coated optical fiber coated with more than one layer of coating, wherein the innermost layer comprises a tetrasubstituted compound according to claim 1, and wherein at least one of the other layers comprises the tetrasubstituted compound according to claim 1.
- 24. A coated optical fiber according to claim 21, wherein the innermost layer is applied to the fiber and cured before the other layers are applied and cured.
- 25. A coated optical fiber according to claim 21, wherein the optical fiber is coated with more than one layer of coating, wherein all or some of the layers are applied in a wet-on-wet process and cured after at least one layer has been applied.
- 26. A coated optical fiber according to claim 21, wherein all or some of the layers are applied in a wet-on-wet process and cured after at least one layer has been applied.
- 27. A matrix material comprising a composition according to claim 1.
- 28. An optical fiber ribbon comprising at least one coated optical fiber embedded in a cured matrix material, wherein the matrix material comprises a tetrasubstituted compound having the formula:

- 29. An optical fiber fibbon comprising at least one coated optical fiber embedded in a cured matrix material, wherein the matrix material before curing comprises an acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer.
