Claims
- 1. A fiber optic grating wherein the grating has a transmission depth of at least about 1 decibel and a length of at least about 1 centimeter, and wherein the optical fiber comprises a radiation transmissive film on the fiber surface.
- 2. The fiber optic grating of claim 1 wherein the length is at least about 15 centimeters.
- 3. The fiber optic grating of claim 1 wherein the transmission depth is at least about 10 decibels.
- 4. The fiber optic grating of claim 1 wherein the grating is a Bragg grating.
- 5. A fiber optic Bragg grating wherein the grating region is at least about 15 cm in length and wherein sections of the fiber that contain a Bragg grating have a mean strength at 50 percent probability of failure when measured according to Standard Test Procedure FOTP-28 of at least 200 kpsi (1.38 GPa).
- 6. The fiber optic Bragg grating as in claim 5, wherein the grating region is at least about 50 centimeters in length.
- 7. The fiber optic Bragg grating as in claim 5, wherein the fiber is covered by an at least partially encapsulating thin film that comprises on a hydrogen-free basis at least about 30 atomic percent carbon, from about 0 to about 50 atomic percent silicon, and from about 0 to about 50 atomic percent oxygen.
