Claims
- 1. Means for use with a radio receiver for enabling display of characters representative of the call letters of a radio transmitting station to which said radio receiver is tuned, said means comprising:
- memory means for storing a table of digital data corresponding with call letters of a plurality of radio transmitting stations and their frequencies,
- means responding to said radio receiver being tuned to the frequency of a transmitting station by accessing from said memory means digital data representative of the characters which compose the call letters of said station,
- character generator means having input and output means and responsive to input of digital data on its input means representative of a character to be generated by providing data on its ouput means for effecting the display of characters,
- a plurality of character display units each comprising a matrix of light emitting diodes arranged in rows and columns,
- a first group of semiconductor switch means for each of said display units connected respectively in circuit with a selected one of said diode rows and columns of each of said display units,
- a second group of semiconductor switch means connected respectively in circuit with the other of the not previously selected diode rows and columns of each of said display units,
- an electric supply line and a plurality of semiconductor switches each having a control element and operable to supply electric power to said first groups of switches, respectively, and to remove said power alternately for each of said groups in succession,
- a digital counter having output means for supplying consecutive binary digital number signals at a predetermined clock frequency,
- first selector means having input and ouput means and responsive to receiving signals on its input means from said digital counter by turning on one of said plurality of switches at a time to thereby supply electric power to a corresponding group of switches for supplying one of said columns and said rows of one display unit,
- second selector means having input and ouput means and operable in response to signals from said digital counter means on its input means by consecutively turning on said switches in said second group to thereby enable supplying electric power to the other of said rows and said columns, and
- means for supplying control signals from said character generator means consecutively to said control elements of said second group of switches synchronously with the output of said digital counter such that rows and columns corresponding with a character in only one of said display units at a time will be displayed.
- 2. Means for use with a radio receiver for enabling display of characters composing the call letters of a radio transmitting station to which said radio receiver is tuned, said means comprising:
- memory means for storing a table of coded digital data corresponding with call letters of a plurality of radio transmitting stations and their frequencies,
- means responding to said radio receiver being tuned to the frequency of a transmitting station by outputting said coded digital data corresponding with the characters that compose the call letters of said station,
- a plurality of display units each comprising a matrix of light emitting diodes arranged in rows and columns,
- multiplexing means for writing in one display unit in a selected one of a row-by-row or a column-by-column fashion and then writing in the next display unit in a similar fashion,
- said multiplexing means comprising character generator means having input means for said coded data from said memory means and output means, said generator means decoding said data corresponding with characters to be written and producing output signals for energizing the selected one of said columns or rows in one of said display units,
- a digital counter for producing consecutive digital number signals and having output means coupled to said character generator, said generator being responsive to said number signals by producing its said output signals,
- a d-c power source and first semiconductor switch means operable to connect said power source for supplying one of said display units at a time,
- first selector means having input and output means, said selector means being responsive to consecutive signals from said counter to connect said semiconductor switch means to said d-c power source for the other of the columns or said rows in the same said one of said display units at the time,
- the output signals from said character generator means controlling said first semiconductor switch means to supply said power synchronously with said signals from said counter to thereby energize said one of said selected columns or said rows,
- second semiconductor switch means, and
- second selector means having input means coupled to said counter means and output means coupled to said second switch means for operating said second switch means consecutively to thereby complete circuits through the other of said rows and said columns.
- 3. Means for displaying a plurality of characters for simultaneous visualization, comprising
- a plurality of character display units each comprising a matrix of light emitting diodes connected in rows and columns,
- a first group of column controlling semiconductor switches associated with each of the display units, said switches in a group being connected, respectively, in a circuit with the diode columns of its associated display unit, each of said switches having a control element for receiving a signal to turn on the switch,
- timing means for producing a repeatable sequence of timing signals,
- a plurality of digit selector switches, one for each of said groups, for being turned on and off to connect and disconnect said groups sequentially in a circuit including a d-c source to enable supplying current to all columns of one display unit at a time,
- first decoder means controlled by said timing means to effect said sequential turning on and off of said digit selector switches,
- a second group of row controlling semiconductor switches, the switches in said group corresponding in number with the number of diode rows in the display units and being connected, respectively and jointly to the diode rows in all of the display units, each of said switches having a control element for receiving a signal to turn on the switch for completing a circuit between the diodes in a column and said d-c source,
- second decoder means controlled by said timing means to supply control signals to said control elements of said row controlling switches in said second group sequentially to connect the diode rows in circuit with said d-c source to thereby energize those light emitting diodes which are simultaneously connected in circuit with said source through switches in said first group,
- a memory device for storing a plurality of encoded digital signals which are respectively representative of the various characters to be displayed simultaneously,
- a character generator controlled by said timing means to receive a succession of encoded signals for one of said characters at a time from said memory device, terminals connected respectively and jointly to control elements of corresponding column controlling switches in said first groups, said character generator being responsive to received encoded signals by supplying binary signals to its output terminals and to said control elements of said column selector switches while said row controlling switches are being turned on and off in sequence to energize said diodes selectively as aforesaid and thereby display said characters.
